Signup for HTC Thunderbolt Goes Live

This image has no alt text

Last week, I caught some flak for being skeptical about a site that may or may not have been an officially sanctioned website promising information about an upcoming HTC 4G device. It was legitimate, but that doesn’t mean I have to forgive it for being so half-assed. Thankfully, we can move past that as HTC has given us a signup sheet to receive information on this “mystery” directly from the horse’s mouth.
Thunderbolt Signup

HTC is even so bold as to offer dissemination of information through email, cleverly ridding the ever plaguing 320 character limit of two SMS messages. Maybe it will catch on.

Sign up at HTC’s site.

ADW.Launcher EX Finally live on the Market, best home app Period

Back in November we brought you a look at ADWLauncher freaky beta. I know when I first saw it, I was all over the place trying to get a copy of the beta release. Now AnderWeb has finally launched the highly anticipated application to the market, called ADWLauncher EX.

First impressions of this application. FAST! It is really fast, very clean and talk about full customization. There really isn’t anything you can’t do with this home replacement. Rather then just vomit up some stuff about this app I’ll let the developer tell you what this is all about.

¿What makes ADW different?
It’s highly customizable, almost in every aspect you can think of
-Hundreds of themes to enjoy!
-Screens editor to add, remove and swap your desktop screens.
-Icons editor to create your own customized shortcuts or edit existing ones
-Customizable main dock with support for fixed shortcuts from 0 to 5.
-Customizable hidden dockbar easy to trigger with support for unlimited icons with scroll. Just swipe up your finger over the main dock to reveal the hidden one, swipe down to return to the main one!
-Lots of settings to play with: colours, animations, sizes… you should dig in!

-5 different app drawer styles/behaviors
—3D Nexus One like application drawer
—2 different plain vertical drawer styles, the “old one” and a new fast and smooth one
—2 different Iphone-like horizontal application drawers, a traditional paginated one and a new one with continuous fling
-Different desktop transitions: new animations while navigating through your desktop screens. Try them all, they’re crazy!!!
-New Icons configurations/look and feel: Tweak your desktop icons, change its sizes, add coloured backgrounds, change font size, color, etc!
-New fast presets mode: Quickly change the whole desktop configuration by 1 click!
-Editable desktop icons for applications, shortcuts and folders!
-Lots of code improvements
-More, more more to come!!

I don’t think I really need to say anything more then what you have just read. I highly recommend this application if you are on LauncherPRO or even the previous AWD.Launcher, you need to go buy this one ASAP. It is currently the best home replacement application on the market, in my opinion.

Conan O’Brien used a BlackBerry Torch to tweet live during his show!

Funny man Conan O’Brien appeared on his show last night with a BlackBerry Torch 9800 and proceeded to live tweet the whole show using Twitter for BlackBerry! Check out the video above for the clip of Conan and Andy with their BlackBerry Torches. I wonder who sponsored this segment? ;) Maybe this sort of thing will turn into a new trend for show hosts. I know plenty of writers use Twitter to live blog events that others may not be able to attend. Would you follow Twitter accounts for that reason?

For the full story on last night’s show, you can check out The Official Team Coco Twitter account or the Team Coco website.

Review: Western Digital WDTV Live Hub

Western Digital’s latest, the WD TV Live Hub, may be slimmer than its predecessors, but it leaves a far more impressive footprint.

Despite being only twice the size of an Apple TV, it includes a 1TB hard drive and multiple other extras. With USB ports on the front and rear, this unit can stream in 1080p from DLNA/ UPnP PCs, has a 3D-ready HDMI 1.4 output, can act as a NAS drive or UPnP/ DLNA client in its own right, and is even accessible via a web browser.

Insert a USB stick and it offers to transfer files, which appear automatically in iTunes. The Mochi interface takes a while to learn, but we soon got the hang of the four function buttons on the chubby but tactile remote.

They seem to have random features assigned to them, and although it’s possible to re-jig their functions and assign commands to the numbered buttons, Western Digital should have made a better first attempt.

The remote lacks shortcuts for video and music, and would benefit from a dedicated input changer.

We threw many files at the WD TV Live, and it played everything from DivX HD to AVC HD in excellent quality. Video can be scanned through at up to 16x speeds, and music and videos can be added to a queue.

Online content stored under the ‘Services’ tab includes reasonably slick software for AccuWeather, YouTube, Flickr and Live365, plus a Facebook service (upload photos and videos, update status and read newsfeeds) and placeholders for US services Pandora radio and MediaFly.

The stubby remote may lack charm, but speed and versatility win everywhere else in this excellent package.

Mobicartel Releases 2 Holiday Live Wallpapers

If you’ve never used a Mobicartel app, you’re missing out big time. Mobicartel developed applications such as Twitoc and Facetoc, which allow the user to update their Twitter or Facebook status, respectively, by talking into their phone. It’s a very useful tool if you’re tweeting on the go. Well, Mobicartel has done it again. Matt and Greg, the founders of Mobicartel, have released 2 holiday-themed live wallpapers.

One is entitled “White Holiday” (seen at the top), and it features classic Christmas figures such as Santa Claus and his reindeer flying around a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, and a train that puffs smoke, as well as a jumping Andy wearing a Santa hat.

The other wallpaper is “Dark Holiday” (above), which puts a twist on the White Holiday atmosphere. Greg and Matt describe it as a “Nightmare before Christmas” live wallpaper. It’s full of dragons, bears, machine guns, broken bottles, and ghosts. Another nice touch worth noting: on both live wallpapers, they’ve made use of the accelerometer, so that it snows! Definitely something to show off to your iPhone buddies. “Is there an app for this?”

Both wallpapers make a great addition to any Android phone during this holiday season, so head on over to the Android Market to pick them up. White Holiday and Dark Holiday are available for just $1 each, which isn’t much at all, especially when it’s going to support your Android developers. Check out the full press release below. Enjoy those live wallpapers!

Winter Dreams Live Wallpaper for Android is a simple but very attractive live wallpaper which features a giant white Christmas tree and large, falling snowflakes. Also, the background changes as you slide between screens, which is a nice touch.

There are no settings so you cannot change the size or rate of the snowfall, but I kind of like the default setting anyway. C Is for Comedy: Should Cookie Monster Host Saturday Night Live?

I was convinced before watching it that this had to be a fan-made thing, but no, the video is posted on the official Sesame Street channel on YouTube. Join the Facebook group, and maybe we’ll see Macarooner and Monster Gaga on Saturday Night Live, too! Honestly, this video is funnier than at least 75% of the material on any episode of SNL I’ve seen in years.

Angry Birds Moving to Live Action Video?

angry-birds-game-logo

Angry Birds has hit such huge popularity, it’s no surprise they’re getting some live video treatment. We’ve seen this happen to many, many other popular games, toys and comics for that matter. Spiderman, Pokemon, Transformers, even G.I.Joe…(which was a terrible live action movie IMHO) all have gotten some love on the little screen as well as the big. Is Angry Birds the next Game to receive some Hollywood attention?

The following video isn’t a Hollywood masterpiece by any leap, but it does put the game in a new direction for ideas on how to keep the excitement rolling in other markets.

Caution: This video has some language that may not be work/child friendly. (Keep the volume down ;) …)

I’m not usually a fan of live wallpapers, but this one combines some nostalgia with good ol’ fashioned awesome sauce. Some clever individual hacked together a live wallpaper using some sequences from Doom, featuring everyone’s favorite protagonist in an endless battle with some baddies.

Doom Live Wallpaper Splatters Demons All Over Your Screen

This image has no alt text

Sure, you can play Doom right on your Android phone, but why bother when you can just watch a Live Wallpaper do it for you? This nifty number pits poor Doomguy against an unending hoard of enemies right on your screen, all day everyday. With your help you can drop powerups and additional weapons, but placing icons also unleashes extra beasts. The choice is yours, and so is the customization, which lets you control character size and speed, the number of spawning enemies, and the background. The following video from PocketNow demonstrates it better than I can. Bonus hamster action included.

We haven’t heard much from The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) since they demoed their home replacement app back in the year, but their latest set of Live Wallpapers, though simple, show that they aren’t resting on the open OS. The three wallpapers are available in the Android Market now, and cover the fantastical to the mysterious from the interactive wilderness of Blue Range to the deep sea setting of Artemia. Perhaps the coolest is the 8-bit inspired Retro Pixels. All react to various inputs, and TAT promises there are some secrets to discover in their depths.

Does the “Baffler” Puzzle Live Up to Its Name?

Baffler Bindu Truss Puzzle

Baffler Bindu Truss Puzzle

Ceaco, the parent company of board game publisher Gamewright, has introduced a new line of jigsaw puzzles called The Baffler. Designed by Chris Yates, The Baffler is billed as “the most unique puzzle ever,” no overlapping images, unique shapes, and without the traditional straight-edged border. There are three puzzles in the series, with 67, 69 and 78 pieces. I received a sample of the 78-piece Bindu Truss puzzle, and I was curious whether it would be as baffling as it claimed to be.

Baffler Bindu Truss puzzle, unassembled

Baffler Bindu Truss puzzle, unassembled

First impression: the puzzle is smaller than I expected, at about 8 inches square. It actually comes assembled in the box, in this sort of cardboard tray/frame, and the rest of the box is actually just a spacer. The first time I worked on the puzzle I actually had to take it apart first, which is a little less work than punching out a bunch of cardboard tokens for a board game but finicky as I worried that I’d damage some of the tabs.

Although it’s advertised as having “no straight edges,” you can see from the picture that there are a few straight edges here and there. However, it doesn’t have a traditional straight-edged border—all of the border pieces have at least a few tabs and notches. Of course, having the frame means that when you assemble the puzzle it’s kind of like somebody has already completed the border for you anyway.

WDTV Live Hub Is Like Methadone for Media Junkies

Hello, my name is John, and I am addicted to movies. My drug of choice is DVDs, especially since my local cineplex isn’t exactly fighting to screen an Eric Rohmer retrospective or hosting a Godzillathon. Sometimes I find myself ordering a bunch of kung fu classics from a Hong Kongbased website at 2 a.m. I need help.

Help that is, with my massive DVD binder cases and slew of ripped files scattered across multiple computers. It can take me 20 minutes just to find the flick I want to watch, if I can find it at all. Did I mention I’d also like to cut my insane cable bill?

Thankfully, Western Digital’s new WDTV Live Hub has arrived to try to save me from myself. The latest of WD’s media streamers, the WDTV Live Hub faces an onslaught of buzz about AppleTV and GoogleTV, but it manages to organize and stream digital entertainment without much hassle. And unlike its competition, the Live Hub also includes a 1-terabyte storage drive for cramming in enough content for most users.

Like most media streamers, the WDTV is simple to navigate and responds to commands quickly. Some pretty-detailed setup options will have you tweaking everything to your liking, down to customizing subtitle style and font size. AV geeks will like the basic remote-admin features: Just type in the IP address into a web browser, and you can perform some basic functions like configure iTunes streaming and set up internet media sources.

There’s even a virtual remote for the PC that looks just like the WDTV remote. Click a button with your mouse and you can control pretty much any WDTV function. It’s pretty slick.

While there is a wicked-simple setup guide included in the box, you’ll have to go to WD’s website to download the full manual. Cables aren’t included either, so add buying HDMI and ethernet cables to your list. Once I had everything plugged in, the WDTV instantly saw all my network shared folders, and bam — all of my content was aggregated in one place.

You can set the WDTV to automatically sync with attached USB storage and even remotely shared network folders, for easy aggregation of your flicks and tunes. If you have a large collection of videos and music (guilty!), you’ll fill up the 1-tearabyte internal hard drive pretty quickly. But you can plug in a USB drive for more capacity, and it easily streams from any local network source too, so your storage options are essentially unlimited.

One not-so-small criticism is that the WDTV makes you choose your media source before browsing, instead of indexing everything in one central place. So, you’ve got to pick between the built-in hard drive, attached USB storage and any network devices with shared folders. Can’t remember where you saved that folder of party pictures? You’re out of luck, especially because the search feature doesn’t scan across multiple devices.

It’s not a dealbreaker, but it would be icing on the cake if you could browse and search all media in one central location, regardless of where it’s stored. To slightly offset the search limitations, you can add music and movies to a queue as well as set favorites, so they’re easily found again.

Compared to the WDTV Live Plus we reviewed back in October, the WDTV Live Hub is a massive step forward. The boxy chassis has been upgraded to a slimmer, better-looking box.

And while it takes a while to begin streaming, WD seems to have addressed video-stuttering issues with better caching, at least I didn’t notice any, using a hard-wired ethernet connection. Local network streams were very quick to start, but online Netflix streams took a good 20 seconds to begin.

After watching dozens of videos, overall playback quality was razor sharp, with true-to-life motion and sparkling audio fidelity. As always however, video quality is still largely dependent on the speed of your local network and internet connections, as well as how the file was encoded in the first place.

The remote has gotten an upgrade as well, with some customizable shortcut buttons, 0–9 alphanumeric keypad, and even a mute button. It’s actually a pretty good remote compared to the quality of most “included in the box” remotes. As a side note, you can also connect a USB keyboard to make typing in searches easier. I even got my wireless keyboard to work.

Unfortunately, if you want to cut your cable bill, this WDTV Live box can’t quite do it. It does serve up a handful of the better online services: Netflix, Youtube, Blockbuster, Live 365 radio, Pandora and Mediafly.

However, you’re out of luck if you like Hulu, and many of the better Mediafly channels are audio-only. For now at least, there is a massive gap between all the content available on cable, what you can view on a PC web browser, and what you’re limited to on a media streamer.

The WDTV Live Hub will keep you entertained as long as you’re aware of its limitations, but I’m probably asking too much from a pretty simple box. If you’re looking for something more robust, build or buy a home theater PC.

For the rest of us, the WDTV Live Hub bridges the gaps among computer, TV and internet — and does it well. It kicks tail if you’ve already got a large media collection, and while it won’t actually tidy up your digital clutter, it will at least motivate you to organize your media. At least it did in my case.

And if it can save me from digital-entertainment ennui, it can certainly save you.

WIRED It’s a streamer! It’s a server! Robust format support. USB keyboard compatible. Extremely easy to set up, especially remote-admin features. A/V quality is sharper than Carl Sagan’s intellect. Simple and responsive interface. 1080p resolution: Suck it, AppleTV.

TIRED You can only search and browse for content on one device at a time. Cables and full manual not included. No built-in Wi-Fi and no Hulu support? We no like. Online streams can be slow to start. Some features can get buried in backwater sections of menu. Want to cut your cable bill? Ha, not with this.

Verizon V CAST App Store now live, download the APK here

The Verizon V CAST App Store is now officially live and online. We got the application a bit early thanks to a leaked Droid Incredible OTA update, which by the way seems to be slowly going out as of earlier this evening.

Droid Incredible owners will be getting the V CAST App Store with this latest OTA, with other devices to follow later on. It is unclear at this time whether or not the App Store will be available in the Android Market, but this is highly unlikely seeing as it is technically the competition.

For those of you who want to check this bad boy out now, we’ve taken the liberty of providing the APK for you to download. Also, be sure to leave us a comment below and share your thoughts about the Verizon V CAST App Store.

CoPilot Live USA launches for $4.99 in the Android Market

Earlier today, ALK Technologies officially announced the release of CoPilot Live USA, a powerful GPS application, to the Android Market. CoPilot Live is already a popular iPhone and iPad app, and is also available for other markets on Android, including Europe, South Africa, and Australia.

The application utilizes predictive address matching which suggests addresses as you type, and features millions of Points of Interest (POIs) that come pre-installed.

Another benefit of this app is the fact that all the maps are stored on your phone, meaning you will always have access to them, even when you’re travelling in an area with little to no reception. The one downfall of this, however, is that the app requires roughly 2 gigs of storage to house all the maps.

This app may also be combined with the ActiveTraffic real-time traffic service, which costs just $9.99 for 12-months.

Rate and download: CoPilot Live USA ($4.99)
