CrackBerry Podcast 064: Looking Back on a week of BlackBerry Mobile World Congress 2011 News!

 CrackBerry.com Podcast

Mobile World Congress 2011 is now over, and it helped to deliver a bunch of news and interesting posts to the CrackBerry blogs this week (click here to see MWC related posts). More PlayBooks were announced (I’m still waiting for the WiFi only one!), NFC on upcoming BlackBerry Smartphones got official, and we saw a bunch more demos of apps running on the BlackBerry PlayBook. We dive into all of that and more on this episode, so sit back and listen to Adam, Bla1ze, Craig, Joseph and myself talk about BlackBerry and a bunch of other things too. Disclaimer: In our excitement we may have dropped a few F Bombs on this one that we were too lazy to edit out. Listen at your discretion. All in all, it turned out to be a pretty fun show.

CrackBerry LIVE Podcast: Ok ok… so we’re finally seriously for real thinking about trying to record these podcasts live like our friends at TiPb.com and AndroidCentral.com do. We’d go for audio only, with a chat room on the blogs, so you can chat with us when we record. Vote on the poll above to let us know what you’d prefer to us do… and sound off in the comments if you have anything specific to ad. Enjoy the show!

eLocity A10 Tablets Quick Take – Not Ready for Primetime, But Looking Nice Regardless [VIDEO]

Just last week, we were reporting that eLocity would be bringing out 7 new Android tablets – the A10.x series. (Replace .x with #1-#7.) eLocity caught my attention with a decent-sized CES booth on the show floor and I rushed over immediately to check them out. We learned that most of the tablets would be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb – which was the biggest drawing factor – but the units on display were all on Froyo with a slightly-modified launcher. None of the other software included has been customized as of today.

The official announcement told us to expect 7 10-inch tablets, but there were only 3-4 of the 7 on display (alongside the current A7 model.) They’re all powered by NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors, have HDMI, have front-facing cameras, and 512MB of RAM. The differences are going to be in screen size, operating system version, and storage space. (Configurations range from 16GB-250GB, apparently.

It’s clear that Froyo wasn’t taking full advantage of the Tegra 2 processor as things were a bit sluggish in my brief testing, but these tablets definitely deserve a re-look once they’re launched sometime this month or early next with Honeycomb or Gingerbread on board. Take a look at my quick demo of the thing on video above.

Dell Looking Glass Tablet Passes Through FCC, Sim Card And SD Card Slot Revealed

Well, looks like the up and coming Dell Streak 7, or now the “Looking Glass”, is still responsible for multiple accounts of extreme and excessive salivation.  The tablet just passed through the hands of the FCC after being there for quite some time, and after spotting some Dell commercial spots, it shouldn’t be long before this baby is in the hands of the masses.  The Looking Glass is possibly headed to AT&T or T-Mobile land, now that it’s been approved for 3G data.  This info is based off of the device’s internal UMTS band specifications.  We’re still not sure if either carrier will have support for voice calls, but it seems like all of the necessary hardware is certainly there.  Hit the break for more info on the device and its internal specs, and get your drool on even more. Looking for Last Minute Holiday Gifts? Try Some Comics

I decided to ditch my regular Comics Spotlight this week and instead wrap-up the year by recommending some of the comics I’ve reviewed this past year in case anyone out there is looking for last minute gifts.

Batman's Sons Celebrate Christmas by the Dark Cat

You can’t buy this particular comic but you can point your friends toward the holiday cheer in the most recent strips.

I tried to keep this list to what might be in your local comic shop or available in trade in at your local bookstore. But I’ve included Amazon or store links when possible just in case you’re willing to pay for last minute shipping.

Independents:

1. The Road to God Knows by Von Allen. It’s the story of a teenage girl dealing with her mother’s serious mental illness but it’s not at all bleak. It’s filled with humor and hope. Allen also has a new series, Stargazer, an action adventure comic  in which three girls are transported by an alien artifact to a strange new world.

2. Hotwire from Radical Publishing. Alice Hotwire, Detective Exorcist. As Stan Lee used to say, ’nuff said.

3. Incorruptible and Irredeemable by Boom! Studios. The greatest hero of this world goes insane and becomes its greatest villain. The greatest villain sees the threat now posed by the former hero and vows to become a hero himself to even the odds. These two titles compliment each other perfectly.

From DC:

1. The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke. This is my favorite superhero story of all time. It’s an alternate DC universe tale that shows the rise of superheroes in the 1950s, leading up to the hopeful New Frontier of the 1960s.

2. Batman: Year One & Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Classics by Frank Miller, these stories tell the beginning and then the end of Batman’s career. Year One has the added bonus of superb art by David Mazzucchelli.

3. Trinity: Kurt Busiek sprawling series that features every DC superhero you’ve ever heard of and some that you probably haven’t. At the core is Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Collected in three volumes.

4. Birds of Prey. My favorite series that features my favorite heroine, Black Canary, who’s gotten some exposure recently on Cartoon Network’s Batman: The Brave & the Bold. The first series has a number of trades. Look for either trades of original series by Chuck Dixon or Gail Simone’s run beginning with “Of Like Minds.”

From Viz:

1. A subscription to Shonen Jump would be a great present for pre-teen and teen boys.

2. Hyde & Closer. As my review earlier this year stated, it was hard for my eldest son to resist a manga starring a young boy and his cigar-chomping teddy bear. Not for very young children but great fun for older ones.

3. Library Wars. Books are now under the control of a stringent and secretive government agency. Librarians create a secret underground force to combat this tyranny. An action book with a female heroine, this would definitely appeal to geek girls.

From Marvel:

1. Agents of Atlas. Marvel revived a once-forgotten title with great flair. Who doesn’t want a title with a mysterious robot, a potential goddess, an Atlantean, a very strange mutated man, a fighting gorilla and the world’s greatest spy on the run from the government and hidden villains?

2. Spider-Girl. My eldest daughter’s favorite title as a pre-teen, it follows the adventures of MayDay Parker both in navigating high school and her work as a young superhero, not always with her father’s consent.

3. Guardians Of the Galaxy. Many of Marvel’s galactic heroes gather together to combat cosmic threats that can destroy the universe. And yet, there are some very human moments, even with a (hero?) named Drax the Destroyer.

Happy Holidays!

Yahoo Looking to Sell, Not Shut Down Delicious

Good news Delicious fans — Yahoo has finally made something of an announcement, saying that the bookmarking service will not be shut down, but sold off.

Despite a leaked, internal image that listed Delicious and other services in a “sunset” category, Yahoo denies it is planning to shut the bookmarking service down.

The Delicious blog says the service is looking for “a home outside the company that would make more sense for the service and our users.”

According to the same announcement, the tech press is to blame for assuming that “sunset” meant shut down. More likely, Yahoo simply wasn’t ready for the level of backlash that rumors of Delicious’ demise brought about, and now the company is backpedalling.

Yahoo also hasn’t made any announcement regarding MyBlogLog, Yahoo Buzz or any of the other services listed as “sunset” in the leaked graphic that circulated last week.

Presumably, in some cases, sunset does in fact mean “shut down.”

Still, the word that Delicious will live on in some form is good news for the millions of users and bookmarks the service currently hosts. Unfortunately, Yahoo has not denied that it has laid off the engineers and technical staff behind Delicious.

Panasonic looking to produce Android phones beginning next year

It seems that Panasonic is tired of sitting by and watching other major electronics giants have all the Android fun. Reuters is reporting that Panasonic is planning on jumping into the smartphone market next year, and they are going to be using Android to do it. Osamu Waki, the company’s mobile communications unit head, had the following to say on the subject:

“We misjudged the speed at which smartphones would be taken up in the Japanese market,” Osamu Waki, head of the company’s mobile communications unit told a news conference. “With the rapid shift to Android, we want to catch up quickly.”

It’s always nice to see more manufacturers get involved with Android, especially big names like Panasonic. I have a feeling we’re gonna see some pretty impressive devices from them starting next year, so stay tuned for any leaks or rumors that may come out in the coming months.

Motorola looking to pull Cliq 2.1 ROMs

We’ve just gotten a tip that Motorola is asking members of their forums to post links to modded Cliq 2.1 ROMs. Motorola plans to take down the ROMs that talented developers worked ever so hard on, claiming that they want Cliq users to have only the official release. According to Motorola, some Cliq users would download a modded ROM, not knowing the difference between it and the official release. Motorola is trying to ensure that Cliq users get the correct update, but i think they’re going about it the wrong way.

This is a somewhat arrogant move on Moto’s part. First, they delayed the 2.1 release from Q2 to Q4, and now they’re trying to take down modded ROMs for the Cliq. Maybe Motorola is just jealous that people in the Android community got 2.1 on the Cliq before they did, but we’ll leave that one up to you. Just when we thought Moto was on the right track, after unexpectedly releasing 2.1 for the Cliq last week, they go and pull something like this. How sad.

New Hobbit Is Looking Hard to Break

Their luck could only be worse if they’d hired Terry Gilliam to direct it. There seems to be no end to the calamities befalling the new two-part film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic The Hobbit. But there is yet a light at the end of the goblin cave!

The first blow to the production was when MGM went bust financially this spring, since the studio owns half the rights to the film and controls the international distribution. Next came Guillermo del Toro’s decision to quit the project, though that was quickly followed by word that Peter Jackson would likely be returning to the director’s chair in his stead. Just about a week ago there was news that two major unions were telling members not to work on the movies.

And, adding insult to injury, word came yesterday that, on Friday, a fire had destroyed Peter Jackson’s miniatures workshop and special studio (reportedly only one of a very few like it in the world) in New Zealand. Surely this would give any superstitious person pause, but not the folks involved in the movie!

Yesterday’s Los Angeles Times reported that Warner Bros., MGM and Warner’s subsidiary New Line Cinema are close to an agreement to start production of the films in January! If this happens, we could see the first part hit theaters for the 2012 holiday season and the second part for the 2013 holiday season. So yes, even if the deal goes through now, we still have at least two years and a few months before we get to see the final product.

But at least it might get the curse to go away. Although there are rumors (which given the current movie-making climate are probably true) that The Hobbit films will be made in 3D. This may or may not be good news, depending on your personal feelings on the subject.

Motorola Looking to Fix Messaging Issue for the Droid X

With Android 2.2 rolling out to the Motorola Droid X, it looks as if it brought a few issues with it. Users have been reporting to Motorola that their incoming and outgoing SMS messages have been out of order along with intermittent SMS notifications. Motorola has responded in their support forums as Motorola’s Matt has stated the following:

Okay. I have news. I talked to our engineering team and it appears that this will require a software upgrade to correct it. They are already on it and seemed confident that they know the why and the how-to-fix. I don’t have any timeline on when an update will be released, but when I know more I will let you know.

Sorry for this trouble and thanks for all the good detective work and for reporting it.

As you have read above, this issue will require an OTA update and the time frame is still unknown as to when this update will be pushed out. If you would like to read more about the issues, head over to Motorola’s Support Forums and get in on the action. Hopefully, they’ll get you all fixed up soon!

What other issues have you all experienced?

Sony Playstation Looking For a Senior Developer, Here’s Why I Think It’s For the PSP Phone

Sony’s looking to hire a senior developer to join their PlayStation team, and you already know which rumor we’re about to entertain. While the list of qualifications and experience needed is lengthy, one line stands out from the rest: “experience in mobile development, specifically Android is a plus.” Hmmm… so you’re looking for someone who has a mind for mobile development, specifically with Android experience. A supposed PSP Phone is mobile, is it not? It’s also rumored to be Android-powered. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, though, because Sony could just be wanting to make an Android app surrounding their gaming experience. I have reason to believe that may not be the case, though.

First of all, why wouldn’t Sony be looking for an iOS developer concurrently? It’s not uncommon now to see big names head to the Android market first before Google’s major competitor, but it’s something to think about. I’ve searched their jobs site looking for any mention of the words “iPhone,” “iOS,” and “iPad” and I came up empty-handed. You might argue “they might already have an iPhone developer,” and you’d have a damn good argument.

sony android hire

But then we look at the location of the job: Soho, London. If we know that Sony Ericsson’s headquarters are in Hammersmith, London and we know that Sony has several SCE – ie, video games – stations throughout the UK, then one might assume that they’ll be bringing someone into that area to work on the rumored PSP Phone that Sony has yet to officially deny. (This scenario would be backed up by the fact that one of Sony Computer Entertainment’s European Research and Development locations are located smack dab in the middle of SoHo and is reachable from Hammersmith – Sony Ericsson’s home – in less than a half of an hour via automobile.) Location can always tell a big story, and I think this time it’s telling us to keep on expecting what we’ve been expecting.

So now we wait, and to pass the time I’ll ask you guys: do you think this is the first true indication of a PSP Phone coming to light? If not, what do you think they have up their sleeves beside the obvious assumption of it being a PlayStation-centric Android app? [Droid Gamers]

LG Looking to Ship 6 Million Smartphones This Year, 70% to Run Android

This image has no alt text

While LG’s mobile division may have gotten off to a rocky start this year, they aren’t going to just wait while every other competitor with Android soars in their endeavors. In an attempt to streamline their portfolio, LG’s looking to cut their handset offering in half – 70 models down to 145 – in order to more easily put the spotlight on some flagship devices they’re most certainly going to be brewing up soon.

lg-android-bot

Out of those 70 models, 20 will be smartphones. Out of those 20? 15 will be running Android. They’ve already stated they wanted to release 20 new Android handsets this year, and with a few of them already released and doing quite decent for themselves on the market, the remainder of the goal should hopefully get things turned back around for their failing division.

They’re projecting to sell 6 million smartphones before the year is over: 30% of them would be running Windows Mobile or Windows Phone 7, while the other 70% will be Android based. Sounds good to us.

Looking Back at the Imagine Cup 2010

Chuck Lawton has been covering Microsoft’s Imagine Cup finals in Warsaw, Poland. This article is the last installment of that coverage; please read the introduction, first installment, second installment and winners announcement if you have not yet done so.

If there were an Olympics for software design, I think it would look something like the award ceremony at this year’s Imagine Cup. Students from all of the world – representing over 75 different countries – participated in a years’ worth of design, development, submissions and regional victories to advance to Warsaw, Poland to compete in various categories including game design, embedded systems, and software development. A couple weeks ago, I was flown out to cover the event, but I was wholly unprepared for the level of technical competency, submission quality and energy that the teams devoted to their projects. And with the integration of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals, winning means more than just a cash prize and a trophy.

In 2001, the United Nations agreed to work towards various goals to help make the world a better place. These eight goals include eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing the child mortality rate, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability and developing a global partnership for development. Each student project had to address one or more of these goals. It’s a smart way to get not only young people but anyone involved in the Imagine Cup thinking about these goals in a practical way. And as these projects get attention, either from the media, local governments or businesses and NGOs around the world, these problems and solutions gain traction and recognition.

As a model for software development education, integration with the UN Development Goals are a smart move as well. When I consider the programming courses I’ve taken at the college level, though arguably in a non-computer science program, we studied the basic fundamentals and used generic business case scenarios in our assignments. For example, one upper-level class involved creating an application that maintains an employee database or another where we built a generic e-commerce site. These are all fine for tutorials, but don’t offer a real and often tangible problem to solve. Additionally, students aren’t typically well versed in business practices to think of all the requirements an employee database should need or the mechanics of operating a warehouse for shipping e-commerce orders.

But what if a course were designed around improving educational accessibility? Given that the students are already sitting in a classroom setting, that problem would be much more relatable and would get students thinking about the world around them.

The Imagine Cup further challenges students with something that’s difficult to obtain in the classroom alone, and that’s marketability. When presenting their project, teams are asked to prepare as if they are pitching their product to venture capitalists or to heads of operations for funding. The fact that Microsoft is offering BizSpark to all of the finalists is a testament to the importance placed on this aspect of the competition. Advancing as far as the finals signifies that these projects meet a certain level of competency wherein VCs, governments or NGOs should be looking at these teams for investment.

In the end, attending the Imagine Cup finals in Warsaw was a humbling experience. It is amazing to see and experience what is not only possible with today’s development tools, but with what today’s youth are capable of. One fact we were reminded of during the event is that for many of these students, this is their first real project. To have this kind of experience and success early on will be of tremendous value to them going forward.

Next year, the Imagine Cup is coming to New York City. I’m not only excited to see what new and innovative ideas teams come up with, I will also try to follow some of the US teams as they compete regionally. So stay tuned for more coverage of the Imagine Cup 2011!

Is this the Droid You Were Looking For? Droid 2 Launching as Early as August 12, R2-D2 Edition Leaked

This image has no alt text

So the rumors up to this point have pointed pretty strongly towards the Motorola Droid 2 launching on August 23rd, but new information is coming in that the phone we just saw leaked running Android 2.2 could hit Verizon stores as early as August 12th. This would be a soft roll-out getting little promotion up until the larger marketing push kicks in on the 23rd date we have been hearing.

droid-2-r2-d2

And while that bit of information is pretty exciting on it’s own, this new info on the Droid 2’s release date also came with a leak of special edition of the Droid 2 that will embrace its Star Wars namesake. An R2-D2 edition of the phone will be launched featuring everyone’s favorite astromech droid on the back cover of the handset. Nerdgasm. Back with the original Droid, Verizon sent out remote-control R2D2 toys to press and media to promote the new phones launch, but little has been done with the Droid/Star Wars connection since Verizon licensed the brand from Lucasfilms. Given the choice would you want the special edition or just the plain jane Droid 2? What if the R2-D2 version required a slightly longer wait?

Is Nokia looking for a new CEO?

Is Nokia looking for a new CEO?Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo (also known as OPK) has been the CEO of Nokia since 2006, but according to a Wall Street Journal report Nokia has launched a search to replace OPK. Given that Nokia’s market share growth has been flat for the past several quarters and their mindshare has been down in 2010, it doesn’t seem all that unrealistic that they may be looking for someone to shake things up a bit and bring in a fresh perspective with a desire to increase Nokia’s market share and expand their lead. There have been some rather rocky times lately (launch of the Nokia N97 and quick death of N900 and Maemo) and the upcoming Nokia N8 is already losing some enthusiasm with statements that it will be the last Nseries Symbian-based phone (confusing since other statements came out that there could be Symbian^4 Nseries units). I don’t know if changing the CEOs can turn this around, but it may show people that Nokia is still serious about leading in this space.

The WSJ report stated that the board was looking to find someone before the end of July so we should hear more about this possible replacement soon.

Chances for rooting and customizing the Droid X looking gloomy

As expected when the Droid X hit the hands of end users the attempt to root it began. The bad news is that from what community developers are saying is that Motorola really locked down this phone using the same locked and signed bootloader as the Milestone. Even more bad news we have yet to see an exploit for the Milestone which leaves a grim outlook on having custom ROM’s and recovery images on this new gem.

Sure with every new phone eventually an exploit may be found but if you are into moding your phones like I am you might want to hold off on the Droid X or patiently wait to see if an exploit can be found. I for one am keeping my original Droid until something is found because I change ROM’s and themes daily. What about you? Anyone here have a rooted Droid or other device that they will stick with until confirmation a Droid X exploit?
