Exciting news just came to our inbox here at Android Guys. One of our favorite companies that we have interviewed, Lookout, is going to be featured in a documentary tonight on CNBC. The show is called “Code Wars, America’s Cyber Threat”, it is a feature about cyber security.
The show airs at 9:00 pm EST, so make sure to tune in. The above image shows John and Kevin from Lookout working with the host of the show, showing her that with a laptop, $ 50 antenna and some free software, they can sniff online traffic.
As our lives become increasingly more mobile, information like this is going to be very important. Make sure to check it out!

Our good friends over at Lookout Labs gave us a sneak peek at an app that will be made available tomorrow morning, and it’s a great app for all our readers to be aware of. From the makers of Lookout Mobile Security, Plan B is an excellent app for anyone who has lost their phone and didn’t have the foresight to install a “Find My Phone” app. Thanks to the excellent synchronization between your phone and market.android.com, you can push this app to your phone, which will then aid you in locating it.

Software like Lookout is great for backing up your contacts and in case you lose your phone, but I bet you never thought it would make a great anti-theft device… As it so happens, one individual was thoughtful enough to install lookout on his phone, and it paid off big time. While making a quick stop at the store, the victim’s car was stolen.
Fortunately he left his phone in the car, and even more fortunate is the fact that he had Lookout installed. He promptly popped open his laptop, checked out where his phone was, called the cops, and within an hour the perp was arrested. Now, most people don’t leave their phone in their cars, but still this is a wonderful story and I’m very happy the car was returned and the thief put behind bars.
Continue reading after the break to watch the video report, and cheers to Lookout for a great product. .

Not too long ago we discussed keeping your Android device safe from malicious attacks; the general advice was that it doesn’t hurt to take a moment to look at what that cool app is requesting access to, before you download it. This week at the Blackhat security conference, a company by the name of Lookout detailed an app on the market that was extremely questionable in nature:
During our research, we found series of wallpaper applications in the Android Market are gathering seemingly unnecessary data. The wallpaper applications that we analyzed transmitted several pieces of sensitive data to a server over an unencrypted network connection. The data included the device’s phone number, subscriber identifier (e.g. IMSI), and the currently entered voicemail number on the phone (see below for technical details). While this sort of data collection from a wallpaper application is certainly suspicious, there’s no evidence of malicious behavior. There have been cases in the past on other mobile platforms where well-intentioned developers are simply over-zealous in their data gathering, without having malicious intent.
To be clear, while a simple wallpaper app needs access to such data is very suspect, as of this posting nothing malicious has been discovered in connection with the apps in question. Still, it’s a reminder of just how easily one can open their device to unauthorized access. While various figures are being used for the total number of app downloads, the smallest number being mentioned is 50,000. There are plenty of security apps to choose from to help keep your data safe, including one from Lookout.
You can read more about Lookout’s report HERE; and while you’re at it, it’s worth reading this post on launcher spam.
