Google’s Android OS Could Bring In $1.3 Billion In Mobile Ads in 2012

Remember back in ‘08 when Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, dismissed Googl’s Android OS, stating that he believed that “building it was financially unsound for Google”?  Man, he’s gotta be biting his tongue right about now.  Well, even we have to admit, at first the business model for Android did sound a little…odd, being there was no foreseeable revenue, initially.  But then again, who are we to question the successful search giant?  However, the question does still remain, how is Google making money from Android?  Well, ad revenue, duh.  You know, those little annoying ads that pop up on your mobile device?  Yep, they are there for a reason.

In 2010, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said Google generated $850 million in mobile ads for the year in 2010 and predicts that the OS could reap $1.3 billion in mobile ads by 2012.  That’s pretty hefty if you ask us.  In an article at eWeek, Munster stated “Android accounted for $130 million of this total, good for $5.90 average revenue per user (ARPU).  For perspective, Google’s advertising totaled $25.77 ARPU, while its Web search engine accounted for $18.85 a head.”  He also went on to say “Looking forward, Google could have an average of 133 million Android users by 2012, each generating $9.85 per year on advertising, meaning Android would kick in $1.3 billion to the company’s ad revenues.”  I don’t know about Mr. Ballmer, but this certainly sounds promising for Google and future Android users.  And we know, by a statement made by Eric Schmidt, the company’s long term goal is to hit 1 billion users.  That’s not completely out of reach.  One billion users at $9.85 per user?  The results could be exponential!

In my opinion, it’s obvious Android is definitely headed in that direction.  Recently, in Q4 of 2010 Android surpassed Symbian sales by a little more than 2%.  And it’s expected that this trend will only continue.  I suppose that is great news for those of us who report on the Android operating system.  Here’s to the upcoming year in Android and to the many many breakthroughs we’ll see Android claim.  Don’t forget to let us know what your thoughts are in the comments below.

Last.fm Will No Longer Allow Free Streaming to Mobile Devices

I’m a big fan of Pandora internet radio service on my Android phone, but I’ve experimented with a little Slacker and Last.fm. Last.fm has been available for free, ad-supported, on a myriad of platforms – Xbox, desktop, and various mobile devices. Sadly, it has been determined by the Last.fm management that it is not cost-effective to continue to offer free versions on all platforms. The only services that will remain available in free versions will be Xbox Live and Windows Phone 7, as well as the desktop version.

So, my Android-using friends…if you use the free version of Last.fm on your Android phone, it will be coming to an end on February 15th. While Last.fm has to maintain their bottom line, it’s always a shame to see free services come to an end. So enjoy this service while you can, because you’ve got about a week left!

AT&T Gives Us the Motorola Atrix 4G Mobile Minute [Video]

This image has no alt text

Last week AT&T gave us a 60-second rundown of the HTC Inspire 4G, and now the Motorola Atrix 4G is getting the same treatment. If you want the quick and slick story on the Atrix 4G, this is the video you want to watch. Even though the laptop dock’s $499.99 price tag (with or without the Atrix 4G) is a bit discouraging, the $199.99 price point for the phone alone is more than reasonable for a handset boasting a dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. In case you need a refresher on the rest, here’s the vid:

LG Optimus Pad Heading for Mobile World Congress, G-Slate Sign-Up Page Live

This image has no alt text

The European version of the T-Mobile G-Slate – being called the LG Optimus Pad – will be on hand at Mobile World Congress according to this Korean press release. (Translated via Google Translate.)

Although the G-Slate/Optimus Pad has been official for quite some time, T-Mobile and LG were not ready to show it off in any capacity. All of that should change starting February 14th. We’ll be most excited to get our hands on it in Barcelona.

It also means we’re nearing a release date. At least for the American version, T-Mobile’s sign-up page for the tablet has gone live. If history is anything to reference, we should see a device launch by the end of this month.

The Optimus Pad and G-Slate are LG’s Tegra 2 tablets that will come shipped with Android 3.0 Honeycomb. The tablet will also have dual cameras on the back to facilitate capturing 3D photos and recording 3D video.

Its screen size isn’t as big as most would hope – clocking in at 8.9 inches – but it’s still a pretty decent size. A lot of people actually prefer the Galaxy Tab’s 7 inches for comfortability, but LG must have been going for a happy medium with 8.9.

After all we’ve seen come out of Google’s press briefing Tuesday morning regarding the new tablet-specific version of Android, there should be no reason to not be excited. [via Android Community]

Skype Mobile for BlackBerry updated to v1.4.0.7

Skype Mobile for BlackBerry updated to v1.4.0.7

Not sure how many of you all out there are making use of Skype Mobile on your devices but if you are, you’ll want to hit the Skype Mobile download page to ensure you have the latest version installed. It appears Skype Mobile has now released an update, letting loose v1.4.0.7. Sadly, at this time we have no change log or anything to go by but users in the forums are suggesting that it’s just bug fixes seemingly and a minor UI enhancement. If you spot anything else, please let us know in the comments or in the forums so that we may pass the word along. Remember folks; this is only applicable to Verizon users, as the service does not work on other carriers. No mention of what devices the upgrade is applicable for either. Thanks Maurice!

HTC Inspire 4G: Mobile Minute & Quick Impressions

This image has no alt text

We’ve heard all about the HTC Inspire 4G release date and potential pricing so not a whole lot remains uncovered except for the retail packaging many of you want to ever so powerfully rip apart on February 13th. To ease the pain of an almost 2-week wait, check out this 1-minute video from AT&T themselves and a few quick impressions supplied by PC World who apparently have the device in-house:

And the relevant PC World pointers:

Well, the Inspire doesn’t have a front-facing camera, an HDMI slot or a kickstand. On the other hand, it does have Dolby Mobile HD sound, which is great for watching full-length movies on your phone.

This is a bit finicky, but I’m not a huge fan of the way HTC has designed the SIM card and battery slots. Rather making the battery cover one removable piece, you have to remove two different panels to get to these slots. The battery slot was especially hard to remove and put back together. I felt like I had to use some force to get the piece to snap in-which is never a good feeling.

The Inspire’s unibody design is otherwise very attractive and it feels nice and solid in hand. It is slightly thinner than the EVO and a touch lighter as well. The 4.3-inch display looks gorgeous and nicely showcases HTC Sense.

We weren’t getting a very strong HSPA+ signal over at the PCWorld offices in the South Park neighborhood of San Francisco. Then again, we don’t really get a strong 3G signal over here either. Powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, the Inspire is perfectly speedy and handled multiple open apps just fine.

Nothing ground-breaking, but hopefully that’ll hold you over. We’ve got a full course of honeycomb tomorrow so sit tight!

Worldwide mobile data traffic

Worldwide mobile data traffic will increase another 26x by 2015, says Cisco. Cisco expects two-thirds of the data to be in the form of video, including TV shows, movies and video calls. Meanwhile, Cisco says that in 2015, 56% of mobile traffic will come from laptops and netbooks, with 27% from smart phones and just 3.5% from tablets.

Other talking points:

  • Global mobile data traffic grew 2.6-fold in 2010, nearly tripling for the third year in a row.
  • Last year’s mobile data traffic was three times the size of the entire global Internet in 2000.
  • Mobile video traffic will exceed 50 percent for the first time in 2011.
  • Mobile network connection speeds doubled in 2010. Globally, the average mobile network downstream speed in 2010 was 215 kilobits per second (kbps), up from 101 kbps in 2009. The average mobile network connection speed for smartphones in 2010 was 1040 kbps, up from 625 kbps in 2009.
  • The top 1 percent of mobile data subscribers generate over 20 percent of mobile data traffic, down from 30 percent 1 year ago.
  • Average smartphone usage doubled in 2010. The average amount of traffic per smartphone in 2010 was 79 MB per month, up from 35 MB per month in 2009.
  • In 2010, the typical smartphone generated 24 times more mobile data traffic (79 MB per month) than the typical basic-feature cell phone (which generated only 3.3 MB per month of mobile data traffic).
  • Android approaches iPhone levels of data use. At the beginning of the year, iPhone consumption was at least 4 times higher than that of any other smartphone platform. Toward the end of the year, iPhone consumption was only 1.75 times higher than that of the second-highest platform, Android.
  • In 2010, 3 million tablets were connected to the mobile network, and each tablet generated 5 times more traffic than the average smartphone.
  • There were 94 million laptops on the mobile network in 2010, and each laptop generated 22 times more traffic than the average smartphone. Mobile data traffic per laptop was 1.7 GB per month, up 49 percent from 1.1 GB per month in 2009.

Mobile: Broadband Singularity

In 2010, there were some 763 million broadband subscribers world-wide, reports Instat.

“From 2007 through 2009, there was a continued growth rate of 25% in broadband subscribers worldwide,” says Vahid Dejwakh, Industry Analyst.

Additional research findings include:

  • By year-end 2010, the US will have over 179 million broadband subscribers in the country.
  • North America continues to be the largest market for cable modem services.
  • Total worldwide DSL subscribers will reach 371 million at year-end 2010, fueled primarily by strong demand for DSL service in the Asia/Pacific region.
  • Approximately 76% of the world’s FTTH subscribers reside in the Asia/Pacific region.
  • Mobile wireless broadband subscribers continue to grow rapidly as mobile telephone service providers roll out 3G and 4G services.

Mobile broadband subscriptions are on track to surpass 1 billion in 2011 only months after reaching half a billion, according to Ericsson. There were 763 million broadband wireless subscribers in the world by the end of 2010, figures InStat.

With Verizon winding down FiOS, their fiber to the home program in the United States, most people will be stuck with one broadband pipe: cable. By year-end, Verizon had 4.1 million FiOS Internet and 3.5 million FiOS TV customers, while Comcast has 23 million video customers and 16.7 million broadband customers, along with 8.4 million Comcast Digital Voice customers.

Susan Crawford is critical of the Comcast/NBC deal, believing it will only reduce competition.

According to In-Stat, unit shipments for smartphones will reach nearly 850 million by 2015.

In-Stat found that by 2015, more than two-thirds of all smartphones will be WCDMA (GSM-based), and LTE smartphones will make up only the small minority of annual handset shipments. This will be true even in 2015. Other smartphone competitors besides Apple, Android and Nokia include MeeGo, Bada, WebOS and Windows Mobile.

Shipments of smartphones, tablets and other app-enabled devices will overtake PCs shipments in the next 18 months, says market research firm IDC. Shipments of personal computers will still continue to increase even as they are surpassed by other devices.

Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker previously predicted the shift to mobile (above). IDC predicts worldwide shipments of smartphones and media tablets will reach 284 million in 2010. In 2011, makers will ship 377 million of these devices, and in 2012, the number will reach 462 million shipments, exceeding PC shipments, says IDC.

For PCs, IDC forecast 356 million PC shipments in 2010, and 402 million in 2011. In 2012, there will be 448 million PC shipments. IDC expects nearly 25 billion mobile apps to be downloaded in 2011, up from just over 10 billion in 2010. IDC forecasts worldwide IT spending will be US$1.6 trillion in 2011, an increase of 5.7% over 2010.

Will Apple’s App Store and Google’s Marketplace become the World Bank – or will Comcast and Huawei run the show and mind the store?

Op Ed: Mobile phones, PC’s, and the games carriers play

This is a guest post by brucerwillkejr@gmail.com @androidbruce

If you are not familiar with what ‘rooting’ your phone means or what root access gives you, it’s not unlike that of an Administrator account on a Windows machine. Without administrative rights on a Windows machine it becomes difficult to install software, printers, and other peripherals. If you were to bring a phone into a carrier’s location they would not be obligated to support you and your issues if you have ‘rooted’ the device. In the same breath these carriers are selling laptops, netbooks, notebooks or whatever the hip marketing term happens to be at that moment (I am going with “notebook”), with windows installed that have administrator accounts that have the highest elevation of access to the operating system. These notebooks have existing data cards that allow them access to the the carrier’s network and use their services in the same way that a phone can browse the web with even more freedom and less restrictions. In addition to the cards that are pre-installed, you can purchase a usb device or wireless access point that also gives the same access to their network from any other device. Devices with administrative rights and root access and any other elevated accounts that might apply. Therefore, it seems to be an extreme case of double-speak when carriers refuse to work on “rooted” phones while they have these notebooks that allow full the equivalent within the Windows operating system.

Phones are not that disimilar from pc’s in today’s market. They browse the web, install applications, edit documents, video and photos. In my opinion, they are they same devices with a different form factor. If you feel the same way that I do in my comparison then can you imagine if other internet service providers restricted access to your devices on their network? Here is an example: you purchased your new Apple Macbook Pro for $1500 and you call Comcast to start service with them for your home Internet. They told you that you could put your device on their network only if it met the minimum requirements, and one of these requirements is that you can not have access to the entire machine’s operating system or administrator accounts. This would not only outrage most consumers, but it would severely hurt Comcast’s business and revenue streams. Many folks have made the argument that since these devices are being subsidized by the carriers and being offered at a significant discount that the carriers can restrict access to the device. With this being an interesting argument that holds some validity, they are still selling notebooks with subsidized prices and thus making a nullified argument. In addition to this argument, if I own my device and purchased it without a discount from the carrier and did not sign a contract to remain a customer for an agreed upon amount of time, should I not be allowed administrative rights to my device? This is just a clear example of the deception and double speak that we receive form carriers on a regular basis in an effort for them to turn the largest possible profit.

So the biggest question might be, how can we put an end to these poor policies and restrictions? Well, I don’t have the answer to that, but I believe if we stir up enough noise and refuse to accept these policies as users we can force companies to reform. We need a carrier to step up and take initiative and show the others how this can be accomplished, while maintaining profits and customers. Until that day comes I think we can try our best to continue to break these constraints and support the developers that work very hard at giving us the most access possible to our devices. The next time you use someone’s binary to gain administrative rights to your device, why not buy them a beer to throw them a few dollars just to say thank you.

Mossberg Reviews Skype’s Mobile and Group Calling

Skype introduced free mobile video calling using an iPhone a couple of weeks ago and said it will support Android phones on Verizon’s LTE network. Then, last week at CES, Skype also launched a paid servicefor group video calling on computers.

Walt Mossberg reviews Skype Mobile and Group Calling:

Apple introduced a free video-calling service called FaceTime that was integrated into the iPhone 4 and later added to the iPod Touch—both of which now have front cameras—and the Macintosh. Various Android phones with front-facing cameras shipped with a video-calling app called Qik, which Skype just bought. Tango launched video-calling apps for both iPhone and Android last year.

Now, Skype has joined the fray. And it brings some advantages. The biggest is its huge subscriber base, from which you can choose to have a mobile video call with anyone whose device includes a camera. Also, unlike Apple’s FaceTime, which works only over Wi-Fi, Skype’s iPhone video calling, like those of some competitors, also works over the phone’s 3G cellular network, though typically with inferior results.

In general, the service was erratic. Far too often, the images were fuzzy, or syncing between audio and video was off, or the calls would freeze or crash.

Group calling, which can handle between three and 10 people, is a feature of the latest Windows version of Skype, and of the latest beta version for the Mac. I tested both and found the Windows version had a few more features, being complete, but both versions did work. Group video calling provided very good quality, with almost no fuzziness, freezing or syncing issues.

Overall, I’d say Skype has nailed paid group video calling on computers, but has work to do on its free mobile video calling. Perhaps the advent of faster 4G networks will help make mobile video calls better.

Group video calling is available as part of the new Premium package from Skype. They offer a day pass for $4.99 (€3.49/£2.99), or as a monthly subscription for $8.99 (€5.99/£4.99)* per month. Skype users who sign up for group video calling in the first month it’s available will receive a 33 percent discount on 3 and 12-month subscriptions. New users receive a 7-day free trial.

On Monday, Skype announced they had 27 million concurrent users. This announcement has come just about two months after they had reported 25 million users Skyping concurrently. Skype’s software is used on an estimated 25 per cent of the world’s international long distance voice calling minutes, and approximately 40 per cent of those Skype-to-Skype calls are happening over video.

Speed Up Your Mobile Site With the ‘Mobile Perf’ Bookmarklet

Speed is the most important element of your website. The best designed, most informative site in the world is useless if it doesn’t load fast enough for people to stick around. Nowhere is this more true than on mobile websites.

Testing mobile websites is something of a headache — there is no Firebug for mobile browsers, which means no YSlow or other profiling tools. True, you can load the site in desktop browser and profile it that way, but sometimes what works on the desktop isn’t necessarily working the same way in a mobile browser.

That’s why Google developer Steve Souders’ created the Mobile Perf bookmarklet, a handy javascript bookmarklet that you can use to test sites on your mobile devices. The bookmarklet is really just a set of links to other bookmarklets, but combining them all in one place makes life a bit easier.

The Mobile Perf bookmarklet contains links to Firebug Lite, the awesome DOM Monster, CSSess, Zoompf and Souders’ own SpriteMe and Page Resources. If you’ve been looking for an easy way to test website performance on the small screen, grab a copy of the Mobile Perf bookmarklet.
