Lightsquared: One more Strategy

LightSquared has given the FCC an amended LTE network program, reports Fierce Wireless, to further lessen GPS interference concerns. The filing (pdf) was created as LightSquared has come below criticism at a congressional hearing over its planned wholesale LTE network, which would be hosted on Sprint towers.

At a Residence hearing Thursday, Republicans criticized the FCC for not using its own engineers to examine regardless of whether LightSquared’s technology posed interference issues.

LightSquared, a mobile satellite communications organization, has received conditional approval from the FCC to build a nationwide 4G wireless network, provided it can be accomplished with out interfering with adjacent GPS signals. But government and industry tests this summer demonstrated the proposed method designed harmful interference.

Under the newest version of their plan, LightSquared will still limit its use the lower 10 MHz chunk of L-Band spectrum at 1.6 GHz, but will now limit the power of its terrestrial base stations to -30dBm when it launches its network.

According to a LightSquared, energy levels, as measured 50 meters from the base station, will not degrade the performance of GPS devices. In tests, only two GPS receivers were operating above that threshold and their efficiency was not degraded. The official stated that LightSquared’s operational efficiency and enterprise plan will not be affected by the alter. By 2015, LightSquared will enhance the power level to -27dBm and by 2017 it will increase it to -24 dBm.

In addition to the alter in energy, LightSquared also proposed a answer for satellite-augmented GPS, which is used for precision GPS devices from companies such as Trimble and John Deere. LightSquared suggested permanently utilizing a 4 MHz chunk of spectrum for those services which will provide them with a stable satellite signal.

That proposal will give LightSquared time to create a filtering resolution for precision GPS receivers, and the company is seeking at antenna replacement or a module modification for legacy precision GPS receivers.

The LightSquared official stated so far the reaction from the GPS community has been mostly positive. The FCC has stated there is no timeline for a decision on LightSquared’s strategy, but the LightSquared official expressed confidence that a choice will be made soon.

The Coalition to Save our GPS, a group of GPS device producers opposed to LightSquared’s network, said in a statement that the newest program “appears to be a positive step toward reducing, for some devices, the harmful interference to GPS signals confirmed during testing of LightSquared’s earlier incomplete proposals.”

Nevertheless, the group stated the strategy does not claim to solve interference to high-precision GPS receivers, and that further testing is necessary.

The new modifications to LightSquared’s plan came as federal government officials stated just before Congress that far more testing of the organization’s program is necessary. The testimony included that of Mary Glackin, a deputy under secretary at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as nicely as Anthony Russo, director of the National Coordination Office for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation and Timing, which coordinates federal agencies’ interest in GPS.

LightSquared signed a 15-year, $ 9 billion network-hosting deal with Sprint Nextel in late July, but the deal is contingent on LightSquared getting FCC approval to operate its network.

Shazam Update Now Brings You Music Previews And More!

I never would have thought in a million years that Shazam would be one of the most used apps in my app arsenal.  Yet, I find myself using the application almost daily.  I have a long commute to work and often come across a new tune that quickly catches my interest.  The days of hearing an awesome beat and wondering where it comes from are over.  In seconds I can whip my smartphone out and tap the huge Shazam button, knowing the artist and album instantly.  Well, Shazam is back at it again improving their application to give you the best possible experience when it comes to music searching and discovery.  So what’s new in their latest update?  Plenty.

For starters, and in addition to a very slight and light UI tweak, they now offer “music previews”.  A small play button has been added for you to check out a 30 sec preview for the tune of interest.  The preview works for tagged songs, browsing history, your friend’s tags and even in the Tag Chart and recommendations section of the app.  In addition, they have improved the tag results page, offering bigger and better cover art for your convenience.  Furthermore, you can now track the location of all your tagged songs.  If you haven’t tried Shazam for yourself, you can check out the app here on our apps database and here for the Shazam Encore application which will run you $ 5 bucks and offers you more goodies under the hood.  You can also snag the download on the Android Market here and here.  As always, feel free to let us know what you think in the comments below.

Galaxy S II to Sell More Units Than Droid Bionic?

Mashwork, a social media listening firm, has apparently gathered some social data regarding both the Galaxy S II and the Droid Bionic, and the hype seems to be pointed toward the S II. Apparently, 68% of the group that Mashwork collected data from are interested in buying the Galaxy S II when it lands Stateside, while 32% are interested in shelling out the money for a Droid Bionic. So, underneath all the numbers and data mumbo jumbo, the Galaxy S II appears to be a better-selling device than the Bionic, even though both devices have yet to be released in the U.S. It seems that Samsung has a leg up on Motorola with this one, as more people want to buy the GS II.

Now, this is only based on a small group of people, and it could change once both devices launch. Still no official launch date for the Bionic, but it’s definitely headed for a record. It was announced back at CES in January, and 6 months later, it has yet to hit shelves. And if Sammy has anything to say about it, the Bionic won’t be on shelves for very long.

Anyone surprised that the Galaxy S II is more popular than the Bionic? Sound off in the comments below, or on our Facebook Wall!

Web Version of Android Market Updated with More Detailed Rating Breakdown

This image has no alt text

The rating system for the Android Market is its single greatest strength and also, its greatest weakness. Most of the time you’re relying on ratings of the illiterate and uninformed to see if and app is worthy to download. “Y THIS APP NO WORK FOR RAZR!?!? 1 STAR 4 U!” (sigh)

Well, our good friends over at AndroidPolice discovered today that the web version of the Android Market has slightly upgraded their ratings system to show a nifty little breakdown chart of an app’s ratings by star (not unlike Amazon.com). Still missing is a view of comments based on star rating but maybe they’ll add that at a later time. So jump on the Android Market from your web browser to check it out!

Microsoft gets paid, Android brings in more dough than Windows Phone

This morning a report was released stating that Android puts more money in Microsoft’s bank than Windows phone. HTC, which runs Android on a number of its devices is required to pay Microsoft, $ 5 per unit sold, due to an out of court settlements involving patent violation. That being said, if HTC sells around 30 million devices, that would mean they would be paying Microsoft a grand total of (I’m sure our reader can do the math) $ 150 million. Now that’s a good chunk of cash just from HTC that’s going straight to company that owns the mobile platform, Windows Phone.

Now if you take the above information that was released by Citi analyst Walter Pritchard and compare it to Window Phone’s position, Android seems to be the money maker. Microsoft’s information says that Windows Phone has sold 2 million licenses. So at $ 15 a license, that would total to $ 30 million. Not quite the cash cow that Android seems to be.

Microsoft is making truck loads of cash from HTC, so it only make sense they would go after all the other Android device manufacturers, looking for a per unit fee, so as to get a cut of the profits across the board, as also reported by Walter Pritchard.

Apps of the Day: PacDroid, Memonic and More

This image has no alt text

Hump Day is back! Another day, another bag of apps. Considering how effortless it is to search the Android market and download applications these days, we’ve been swimming in a sea of these apps and have no shortage of them to talk about. The ones we came across today are some of the most interesting and best that deserved a shout, though, so take my word when I say that you should at least check out the market listing for each one.

PacDroid Live Wallpaper – It’s PacMan, except with an Android robot. It’s a live wallpaper. And instead of pellets, it eats Apples. With a capital A. What more could you want? There isn’t much to it other than that, but you can change that Apple if your green friend is allergic to them. Go ahead and grab it for free. [Market]

Memonic – In a world filled with note-taking applications, it seems there can never be too many. Memonic has finally brought their wares to the Android platform. Like Evernote and many other competitors, you can organize notes with tags and notebooks, save a picture as a note, and sync all of that back to the cloud for use on the web or other platforms. [Market]

GO Launcher EX – We’re sure you folks have heard of this one before, but one of our favorite readers asked us to give it a shout. Go Launcher Ex is yet another home alternative, but is quickly up and coming as many’s favorite. All of the things you’d want are here, such as themes, scrollable widgets, fancy transition animations, a customizable dock and more. And the developer provides frequent updates that improve and add more things than they break. Go ahead and take the free download. [Market]

Paradise Island – It’s no Sim City contender, but being able to build your own island and civilization on Paradise Island is loads of fun. The city lives while you sleep, so you never know what you’re going to face when you start it back up in the morning. There are tons of buildings to be made, tons of people to make happy, and tons of experience points to earn. Best of all, it’s free with no ads. (But don’t be surprised to see micro-transactions pushed on you.) [Market]

AT&T Evolves: LTE in 5 markets this summer and more by years end

Back in Septempber 2010 we brought our readers an article on – AT&T Launching their LTE (4G) network in mid-2011. At that time AT&T’s operations CEO, John Stankey gave us this information. Now it’s May 2011, and AT&T has announced that it will be setting up LTE in five market. These include, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta and San Antonio.

Well AT&T, thats a good start. It’s nice to see this top mobile carrier give it’s customers something to look forward to. I would think they should really be trying to step up their game in the LTE markets. Just look at Verizon Wireless. May 19th announcements for 9 cities to receive LTE coverage. Then on May 23rd, another 21 cities announced. Big Red is on a roll, i’d say. So, after AT&T covers these 5 cities with LTE, and add 10+ more by the end of this year, customers may have good reason to rejoice.

T-Mobile Announces Theoretical 42Mbps in More Than 50 Markets Across US

T-Mobile announced late last night/early this morning that they’ve doubled the speeds of their 4G network in more than fifty markets across the United States.  Touting a theoretical max speed of 42Mbps, it’s by far faster than anything we’re experiencing today.  Of course, theoretical means you’ll need all of the right conditions in place, including device, time of day, network traffic, weather, eye color, and ERA.  We’re only partially kidding her as real-world speeds will likely come in much lower every single time.  Still, the pieces are in place for a faster network and we can’t fault T-Mobile for that.

As of May 25th, the only device that offers support for the 42Mbps speeds on T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ network will be the Rocket 3.0 USB adapter.  Expected to run $ 99.99 with a qualifying contract (after a $ 50 mail in rebate), the Rocket 3.0 allows for 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi connectivity.  Wanna snag one outright?  Be ready to pull $ 200 out of your wallet.  Sadly, there are no Android devices able to harness such ridiculous data speeds.

Here’s a bullet list of the markets that will allow for up to 42Mbps.

As T-Mobile’s 4G network continues to expand and get faster, the company’s portfolio of 4G products is also growing. T-Mobile currently offers a dozen 4G-capable devices spanning smartphones, tablets and mobile broadband products that give customers access to America’s Largest 4G Network. The company has announced plans to deliver a total of 25 4G-capable devices in 2011.

T-Mobile’s 4G network already reaches more than 200 million Americans in 170 markets. By midyear, T-Mobile expects that more than 150 million Americans will have access to increased 4G speeds as T-Mobile upgrades its 4G network.
