Nokia + Microsoft?

Two turkeys do not make an Eagle”, tweeted Google VP of Engineering Vic Gundotra.

Gundotra may be referencing Nokia’s annual Capital Markets Day, tomorrow, in London. There, new CEO (and former Microsoft president) Stephen Elop is expected to announce an alliance with Microsoft. Gundotra’s tweet this morning made it very clear who Nokia is going with, says TechCrunch.

An internal memo from Elop to Nokia employees has sparked speculation that the mobile phone maker will largely abandon its own aging operating system, Symbian.

The first iPhone shipped in 2007, and we still don’t have a product that is close to their experience. Android came on the scene just over 2 years ago, and this week they took our leadership position in smartphone volumes. Unbelievable.

We have some brilliant sources of innovation inside Nokia, but we are not bringing it to market fast enough. We thought MeeGo would be a platform for winning high-end smartphones. However, at this rate, by the end of 2011, we might have only one MeeGo product in the market.

At the midrange, we have Symbian. It has proven to be non-competitive in leading markets like North America. As a result, if we continue like before, we will get further and further behind, while our competitors advance further and further ahead.

So it’s Microsoft for smartphones.

It seems like a bad move if you look at market share. Nokia has lost their top spot to Android and Android and Nvidia are becoming the new Wintel.

What does Microsoft bring to the party? Cars, games, ARM-based PCs and marketing. What the combination lacks is a tablet strategy, open architecture and market share.

It could be good for consumers. Three strong smart phone operating systems are better than two (Apple and Google). Consumers will determine who has the best approach.

Nokia Considering Next OS: MeeGo, Android, or Windows 7

Nokia products world-wide hold a respectable portion of the mobile market. Their dumbphone Symbian OS still has the most users globally by most tallies, but their smartphones have had a hard time finding footing…largely because their OS was developed in-house, and they have floundered between several versions. But tomorrow is the day that it will become official: They are either going to stick with their own MeeGo (unlikely), or make the jump to either the Android or Windows Phone 7 OS for all future smartphones.

Whichever choice they make, Nokia throwing in with either Android or WP7 will greatly bolster the marketshare of the favored company, so tomorrow’s announcement will be a big one. And we’ll be sure and let you know as soon as we hear anything.

Nokia Considering Next OS: MeeGo, Android, or Windows 7

Nokia CEO tells it like it is in leaked internal memo

Nokia CEO tells it like it is in leaked internal memoI wasn’t sure what to think about new Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, but after reading the leaked internal memo on Engadget I have new respect for him and am getting more excited about the future of Nokia. As much as I love my orange Nokia N8, it has felt like we have been living in a weird limbo world since mid-2009 when the rather lame Nokia N97 was released.

We never really knew what the strategy was with the OS as we saw S60 evolving, then Maemo released, then Maemo killed, then MeeGo talked about and after reading what Mr. Elop wrote Nokia may not have known internally where they were headed either.

A couple of quotes from the memo that struck me personally were:

The first iPhone shipped in 2007, and we still don’t have a product that is close to their experience. Android came on the scene just over 2 years ago, and this week they took our leadership position in smartphone volumes. Unbelievable.

I still believe there are several innovations and design elements (penta band radio, USB on-the-go, HDMI out, fantastic aluminum in colors) of the N8 where it does beat the iPhone, but Mr. Elop mentions the experience and that is indeed where Nokia has fallen down.

Many of us have said Nokia has been too slow to change with the times and they invented many of these technologies that Apple has been perfecting so they needed to get off the pot. Mr. Elop acknowledges this so it was nice to see we weren’t just crazy thinking things were too slow. Nokia seemed to move along at their own pace, but it sounds like that is NOT going to happen now with Mr. Elop at the helm.

Nokia will be holding their Capital Markets Day on Friday where Mr. Elop will reveal his future strategy. There are rumors that he might partner with Microsoft and release Windows Phone 7 devices or go with Android in an HTC-like multiple platform approach. As a fan of both Nokia and Windows Phone 7 you know what I would prefer. If Windows Phone 7 is brought to Nokia hardware then get ready to see a LOT more writing here on Nokia Experts as WP7 is my personal preferred platform at this time.

What do you think of the memo and Mr. Elop’s statements?

All About Symbian releases first part of their Nokia E7 review

All About Symbian releases first part of their Nokia E7 reviewI really enjoyed playing with the Nokia E7 at Nokia World last Fall and was thinking I might pick one up. My orange Nokia N8 is performing quite well at the moment and I cannot justify the $800+ likely unlocked price of the E7 so unless Nokia sends out an eval unit for a bit I won’t be writing a review here on Nokia Experts. However, my buddies over at All About Symbian will indeed be providing full coverage of the device and now that the E7 is shipping you can check out Rafe’s first part that covers an overview of the hardware and some first impressions.

In the past, the Eseries devices have all been priced quite low compared to Nseries smartphones, but with the E7 that looks to have flip-flopped. Rafe’s first part is very detailed and after reading it I started trying to figure out what I could sell to pick one up for myself :)

I have to try the keyboard though to see if that is enough for me to give up the better camera, smaller form factor, and expandable memory of the lovely N8. As great as the E7 looks, I am not sold that a physical QWERTY keyboard justifies getting rid of my N8.

How many readers are planning to pick up an E7 when they become available?

Nokia E7 finally arriving in stores, no word on US availability though

Nokia E7 finally arriving in stores, no word on US availability thoughNokia issued a press release today stating that the Nokia E7 was finally arriving in select markets. The Nokia USA site doesn’t have it up for pre-order yet and the only one I could find on Amazon shows a price of $849 with a due in stock date of 31 March. I personally am very happy with my N8 and can’t justify these high prices for a phone with overall less capability than the N8.

The E7 is definitely an attractive device with the large 4 inch ClearBlack display and full QWERTY keyboard. I am not a big fan of the non-expandable 16GB memory and 8 megapixel camera when I have the N8 with 16GB and a microSD card slot with 12 megapixel camera and Xenon flash. The E7 does have the USB on-the-go feature and HDMI out capability though.

The E7 is designed as a business-focused device with some of the Eseries features such as a full version of an Office application and VPN support. I do hope to get one for an evaluation period because I did enjoy using it at Nokia World last year. Any readers looking to pick up the Nokia E7?

Nokia N8 firmware PR 1.1 available, this is not the BIG one

I just read over on All About Symbian that a minor firmware update is available now for the Nokia N8. Unfortunately, this is NOT the one we have all been waiting for with the new web browser and portrait QWERTY keyboard support, but it does look to improve some aspects of the device.

The changelog, as posted by All About Symbian, includes:

  • Web updated to 7.2.8.10
  • Quickoffice updated to 6.4.166, editing functions now enabled on the N8 (i.e. don’t have to pay to upgrade), improved zooming functions
  • Adobe Reader updated to 2.5.653
  • Big update to Nokia Email; performance improved; ‘unread emails’ flag added to homescreen widget; meeting requests can be accepted directly from email invitations; maps integration, which means people can view the meeting location on the map when the address is mentioned in the location field in the invite
  • General performance improvements
  • Dialer now works in landscape mode
  • Previous performance updates are rolled in and, in the full (Ovi Suite-installed, >100MB) image, there’s the facility to provide a better working starting point than hard resetting a PR 1.0 device

One fix that is actually quite important for me is the ability to now respond to meeting requests in email. This limitation actually kept me from using my N8 at times since I need to be able to respond to these for work.

I plan to perform the update this morning, but REALLY want to see the 2.0 update with the improved browser and QWERTY keyboard support. I am not seeing it available yet, but will keep trying. Make sure to access the Device Manage by entering *#0000# in the dialer to check for the update. You can also go to /Settings/Phone/Phone management/Device updates to check for the update. This update WILL NOT be found in Software Updates, which is where I went first too :)

Nokia Bubbles makes utilities and screen lock more fun

Last week I heard a lot about a new Nokia Beta Labs utility called Nokia Bubbles and I finally went and downloaded it for my Nokia N8. Nokia Bubbles is a utility that lets you interact with your N8 in a rather unique way to perform several different functions, such as unlocking your device, responding to new messages, managing your profile, enabling the flashlight (doesn’t work on N8 with Xenon though), and many more. Check out the more info page for more about what Nokia Bubbles can do and view the video below as well.

Bubbles appears when you press the Apps key while your device is in sleep mode and then you grab a bubble and drag it to a drop point to perform the action.

I am having fun with it and plan to see if my wife likes it on her Nokia N8. I have been playing with it a LOT more and Bubbles is a real kick to have on your device. BTW, while the Xenon flash doesn’t work on the N8, using the Flashlight bubble will turn your display fully white. Any readers try out Bubbles yet?

Android Topples Nokia for Top Spot

The global smart phone market exceeded 100 million units in Q4 2010, says market researcher Canalys. Google’s Android has become the leading platform. Shipments of Android smart phones reached 32.9 million, while devices running Nokia’s Symbian platform trailed slightly at 31.0 million worldwide in Q4 2010.

HTC and Samsung together accounted for nearly 45% of Google OS-based handset shipments. The United States was the largest country market in terms of shipments, at more than double the size of the Chinese smart phone market. RIM recaptured first place from Apple, while HTC successfully maintained its third-place ranking in the US.

Android was by far the largest smart phone platform in the US market in Q4 2010, with shipments of 12.1 million units – nearly three times those of RIM’s BlackBerry devices. Windows Phone 7 devices appeared too late in the quarter to take full advantage of holiday season purchasing. As a result, Microsoft lost share in the United States, from 8% in Q4 2009 to 5% in Q4 2010.

‘The US landscape will shift dramatically this coming year, as a result of the Verizon-Apple agreement,’ said Canalys Analyst Tim Shepherd.

Google’s Android Market currently features less than 130,000 apps, but its grew more than 500 percent last year, compared with Apple’s App Store, with some 400,000 applications, rising by about 110 percent. Nokia revealed during its Q4 earnings report last week that its mobile application market, the Ovi Store, now offers 30,000 apps available for download.

Gartner recently predicted that apps will generate $15 billion in revenue this year, with downloads more than doubling, to 17.2 billion from 2010′s 8.2 billion. By the end of 2014, Gartner forecasts over 185 billion applications will have been downloaded from mobile app stores, since the launch of the first one in July 2008.

Android tablets captured 22 percent of global tablet shipments in the three months to Dec. 31, up from 2.3 percent in the preceding quarter, according to Boston-based researcher Strategy Analytics. Apple’s iPad has sold more than 14.8 million units worldwide since its introduction in April. ISuppli forecasts 57 million tablets will be sold this year and 171 million in 2014.

Nokia offers Nokia Reader RSS app in Beta Labs

Like most of you, I am a very busy person and don’t have time to sit around clicking links to hundreds of sites to get my daily news. I have been using Google Reader for years as an RSS aggregator and also use this through Gravity on my Nokia N8. I just read over on the Nokia Conversations site that a new Nokia Beta Labs product is available for reading RSS feeds. The Nokia Reader app looks pretty slick, as you can see in the video below, and I just downloaded it to my Nokia N8.

If you are reading this site, then you likely know about RSS and use some kind of reader to browse through information. The cool functions in this new Nokia Reader app include a home screen widget and push notifications. I would LOVE to see support for Google Reader sync so I did not have to setup all my feeds in another application, but this is an early beta so maybe we will see this added. They should have support for importing OPML files though since setting things up by searching directories or manually typing URLs is a bit tedious.

Nokia Reader is compatible with S60 5th Edition (excluding Nokia 5800 XpressMusic) and Symbian^3 devices. Nokia Reader has been tested to work with Nokia N97, Nokia N97 Mini, Nokia X6, Nokia N8 and Nokia C7.

Any readers try this out yet?

Does the Nokia N8 excel in the under-hyped features?

Does the Nokia N8 excel in the under-hyped features?I was reading an article written by my buddy, Philip Berne, over on Phonescoop that discussed all of the over-hyped features us smartphone enthusiasts focus on a bit too much. We are into the latest tech and features while “normal” people likely do not care much about these features. Philip talks about 4G, video calls, dual-core processors, HD video recording, and NFC technology. The funny thing is when you read the section on the under-hyped features that really matter it is pretty clear that a device like the Nokia N8 is exactly what Philip should probably consider.

The under-hyped features he mentions that are important to him are call quality, a good camera (Xenon flash is mentioned), and threaded text messaging. The Nokia N8 leads the world in call quality and the best camera on any smartphone while also having a very enjoyable and functional threaded text messaging application.

Are you focused on the over-hyped features? Do you think we should stop focusing too much on technologies that won’t be applicable to the masses for 6 months to a year?

Nokia: Doesn’t Come With Music

Nokia is ending its bundling of free music downloads with cellphones in 27 countries, where it has gained little traction since its 2008 launch.

The world’s top cellphone maker will continue to sell phones with 12-month subscription to free music downloads in China, India and Indonesia and with 6-month subscriptions in Brazil, Turkey and South Africa.

Ovi Music Unlimited, previously known as Comes with Music, is a music subscription that has been included on some Nokia phones. It allows users to download an unlimited amount of music to their PC or over the air to the phone. After the subscription is over users can continue to listen the tracks they have downloaded.
Nokia unveiled the service in late 2008 — but the Comes With Music program has lacked operator support and failed to attract many customers. All four major labels — Vivendi’s Universal Music, EMI, Warner Music Group and the music arm of Sony — signed up for the service, which was seen at start as a major challenger for Apple’s iTunes.

Reasons behind the lackluster performance include use of older supporting handsets for the product at its launch, digital rights management (DRM) software that tied downloaded music to the device and a difficult to understand product offering.

“The markets clearly want a DRM-free music service,” said a spokesman for Nokia, adding the firm continues to offer DRM-free tracks through its music store in 38 countries. DRM software limits sharing of songs between different devices.

iTunes accounts for 70% of worldwide online digital music sales, making the service the largest legal music retailer. Other services besides iTunes, such as Spotify, also offer access to music on their smartphones for a monthly fee.

Consumers with the free music bundle in the 27 countries where the sale of the service have stopped will continue to have access until their subscriptions run out.

What happens when you strap a Nokia N8 to a rocket?

I posted about the Nokia N8 Producers contest a couple of weeks ago and have since created three video entries, with a couple more planned before the end of the deadline. The one that carried the most risk and that I thought most people would enjoy was the one I just posted today when I strapped my orange Nokia N8 onto a custom, experimental model rocket that I built many years ago.

While I embedded the YouTube video of the launch preparation, launch of other rockets, and launch of my orange N8 below, please make sure to visit my Facebook page and Like the video since I understand that this counts for part of the judging.

I won’t give away what happens when the N8 is launched and I’ll let you check it out in the video. Make sure to watch the end since I had the video camera on the N8 turned on and captured the launch from the rocket’s perspective as well.

Have a Nokia N8? Check out Rita’s 10 steps post

Have a Nokia N8? Check out Rita's 10 steps postRemember Rita El Khoury from Symbian Guru? Well, she and Ricky Cadden have a site called Mobile R’n’R where they make a post every Monday on something mobile related. This week Rita posted a fantastic post for Symbian owners called 10 Steps to Make Sure Your Symbian Experience is Enjoyable and even though I have been using Symbian for years I discovered a few helpful tips and apps myself.

I tried using the Nokia Situations utility and it does a pretty good job, but I decided to give the Nokia Bots utility a try instead based on what Rita wrote about it. I don’t theme my orange Nokia N8 at the moment since I have an updated version of SPB Mobile Shell 3.7 that fixed that calendar bug I wrote about.

I have Gmail working fairly well for me now with the integrated email client, but it took several tries to get it to this point. I heard about Mobile Documents before, but never knew it handled email so I went and installed it on my N8 as Rita recommended and look forward to trying it out.

I completely agree with the Opera Mobile, Gravity, and Nokia Maps 3.06 recommendations. A couple other apps she recommended that I haven’t yet tried and just downloaded include WhatsApp, Socially, and the new Nokia Big Screen utility. The Nokia N8 is an excellent device (my wife still hugs me regularly in appreciation of her blue N8) and with amazing tips like this you can make it work just how you want it to.

Do you have any steps or apps to add to Rita’s thoughts?

SPB TV released for Nokia N900 and Maemo 5

SPB TV released for Nokia N900 and Maemo 5I have been so happy with my Nokia N8 (and Windows Phone 7 device) that I forgot about my Nokia N900. I just received the news that SPB TV is now available for the Maemo platform so I pulled out my N900, charged it up, and installed the new software. It also gave me a chance to update other pieces of software and discover the N900 really is a fantastic piece of work.

SPB TV is the first streaming TV application I have seen for Maemo and with the integrated kickstand on the device it does give you a nice viewing option. SPB TV is available on virtually all of the mobile platforms now and offers some decent content for free. There are actually now more than 150 channels from over 20 countries. SPB Software reported that there are more than 2 million users as well.

As listed in their press release, the main features of SPB TV for Maemo include:

  • Full Screen TV player with picture-in-picture mode
  • Unique TV browser with fast channel launching and switching
  • A wide selection of public live TV channels
  • Integrated TV Guide with a list of current and upcoming TV shows
  • On-screen control panel
  • Video quality switcher
  • Advanced Video Codec support

Most of the stations are foreign stations, but I do enjoy the Christian stations and a couple that have football and rugby coverage. Have you tried out SPB TV and if so, what do you think of it?

Have a Nokia N8 and want to fly?

Have a Nokia N8 and want to fly?I have always wanted to be an astronaut and almost applied for a mission engineer position when I was in the USCG and they were looking for engineering officers, but I really did not want to spend the rest of my life living in Houston. There is no an opportunity for me to get a taste of space with a grand prize of a Zero Gravity Flight through the Nokia N8 Productions contest. I see that this has been going on for nearly two weeks and I just now caught wind of it so I am sorry to all you readers for my tardiness.

If you have a Nokia N8 and want to fly then I encourage you to enter this contest now. If you don’t have a Nokia N8, then you can actually submit your video idea and get a chance for a loaner to use for the contest. I have a couple of ideas for videos and plan to start shooting very soon so keep an eye on that site for my videos and I hope you enjoy them.

Tracy and Matt post a detailed and fair Nokia N8 review

Tracy and Matt post a detailed and fair Nokia N8 reviewIt seems that those who have used Symbian love the N8 while there are many in the media who rarely use Symbian and tend to slam the N8. Thus, I was pleased to read a very fair and balanced review over on Tracy and Matt’s site. Overall, they really liked using the Nokia N8 and pointed out some good apps and aspects of the device to consider.

A part from the 10-second review section that summarizes the article is as follows:

  • Summary: A fantastic new operating system that is a long overdue update for Symbian, the hardware is superb on this phone also and I would have to say that very little disappoints.
  • Best of: Camera, Build Quality, AMOLED screen, Battery life
  • Worst of: OVI Store, buttons a little flimsy, weighty

I have to say I am jealous of those who can use Spotify on their N8 and wish we would get Slacker Radio or even Spotify support here in the U.S.

Shoot, I am even thinking about it for one of my other daughters who is looking for a new device.

Nokia & T-Mobile Announce 650 Mbps HSPA

T-Mobile USA and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) are backing an HSPA-based technology that they claim could compete with the peak-rate data speeds promised by LTE Advanced, reports Fierce Broadband.

The companies say ‘Long Term HSPA Evolution,’ could achieve peak-rate data speeds of 650Mb/s, near the Advanced LTE system.

Such a capability would require a 40-megahertz wide channel, as opposed to 10 Mhz in today’s LTE networks or up to 20 Mhz channels in Advanced LTE, an officially sanctioned “4G” standard designed to deliver up to 100 Mbps (mobile) and up to 1 Gbps (fixed). The advanced HSPA standard would allow operators to combine spectrum from various frequencies. That means part could be in the 1900 MHz band, while another part could use spectrum in the AWS band, the 2.6 Ghz band, or even satellite ATC frequencies at 1.6 Ghz.

Their aim is to see the technology commercially deployed by 2013. The “key features” of Long Term HSPA Evolution were accepted during the plenary meeting of 3GPP RAN held on 7-10 December, according to the two companies.

“We strongly believe in continued HSPA evolution in parallel to the further development of LTE and LTE Advanced,” said Neville Ray (pictured), CTO at T-Mobile USA. Long Term HSPA Evolution would allow T-Mobile USA to squeeze more life out of its existing infrastructure. T-Mobile has courted controversy with a marketing campaign in the US that claims its existing HSPA+-based service is “4G.”

Back in October, the ITU declared LTE-Advanced and WirelessMAN-Advanced as official 4G technologies. Verizon Wireless – with its recently launched LTE network and Clearwire with WiMAX – are not officially 4G, according to the ITU definition.

A similar solution is used now in Dual-Channel HSPA+ (DC-HSPDA) networks, which combine data from two frequencies and delivers speeds up to 42 Mbps.

Nine operators — including Bell Mobility in Canada and Telstra in Australia — have already launched services at 42M bps. The average real-world download speed is reportedly 7M bps to 14 Mbps.

According to Wikipedia, from Release 9 onwards it will be possible to use DC-HSDPA in combination with MIMO. The support of MIMO in combination with DC-HSDPA will allow operators deploying Release 7 MIMO to benefit from the DC-HSDPA functionality as defined in Release 8. While in Release 8 DC-HSPDA can only operate on adjacent carriers, Release 9 allow that the paired cells can operate on two different frequency bands.

In other news, AT&T, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless today announced the formation of a joint venture chartered with building ISIS, a national mobile commerce network that aims to fundamentally transform how people shop, pay and save.

Isis’ initial focus will be on building a mobile payment network that utilizes mobile phones to make point-of-sale purchases.

By utilizing smartphone and near-field communication (NFC) technology to modernize the payments process, Isis intends to deliver new levels of competition and value to consumers and merchants. Isis expects to introduce its service in key geographic markets during the next 18 months.”

No other smartphone today can match the Nokia N8 hardware & functions

No other smartphone today can match the Nokia N8 hardware & functionsI have a rather huge audience over on ZDNet so I posted an article I have been thinking about for a while regarding the Nokia N8 and the fact that Nokia put technology and capability in it that is not matched with any other smartphone today. You can read my uncompromising Nokia N8 article and see some of the idiotic discussions that people make who have likely never even tried the Nokia N8.

I am currently using my Nokia N8 and Samsung Galaxy Tab, both on T-Mobile, and have no plans to change to anything else for the foreseeable future. The Nokia E7 does look sweet and if I do anything it will be move to that and pass my N8 to someone else in my family.

Do you agree or disagree with my take on the fabulous N8 hardware specifications and functions?

Enter the Ovi Daily App 2010 Must Have Apps contest to win a Nokia N8

I LOVE applications and now that the Ovi Store is good on the Nokia N8 I am downloading and purchasing more and more on my device. To celebrate the end of the year and figure out what your favorite Symbian apps are Nokia is holding a fantastic online event called the Ovi Daily App Must Have App of the Year Awards. You can vote for apps in the event from now until 31 December 2010 and by casting your vote you are entering a contest to win a Nokia N8. They will pick from all of those who correctly pick all six winning apps and that device will have those six apps. Check out the contest video below.

Apps are nominated in the following categories: Games, Social Networking, Music, Entertainment, Utilities, and Business & Productivity. Five apps are nominated in each category. I voted for my favorite apps and hope to win a Nokia N8 too.

The winning apps will be announced on 5 January 2011. Keep in mind that the apps for this year’s contest are compatible with Symbian S60 5th Edition devices because that was the main high end operating system this year so you won’t see some Symbian^3 compatible apps. This explains why I did not see Angry Birds in the game category or that would have been the easy winning selection.

Go vote now and good luck everyone. Voting only takes a couple of seconds as you choose your favorite apps in the survey and give them your email address so they can contact you if you win.

Nokia delays E7 and confirms 800 employee reduction

I would love to only report good news here about Nokia, but in reality life is not always rosy around the holidays.

I really enjoy using my orange Nokia N8 and have no plans for any other Nokia device until I see something running Meego. The Nokia E7 looks like a very nice alternative with the large QWERTY keyboard, but the lack of expandable storage, 8 megapixel EDOF camera, and larger size don’t have me wanting to make an immediate purchase. It turns out you won’t be able to get one in your stocking this year as Kevin points out that Nokia is delaying the release of the E7 until early 2011.

Nokia pushed back the N8 release to make sure the product was ready to go and honestly it turned out to be a good move as the N8 is an amazing device with just a couple areas where improvements are needed (portrait QWERTY and improved web browser) and we know these are coming with a software update. I enjoyed playing with the E7 at Nokia World, but I have really moved on from using physical QWERTY keyboards and am not sure I want to sacrifice the size and weight to get one again.

I would love to evaluate one and hope Nokia sends me one to use for a couple of weeks. They should know with my track record that I usually buy good devices that are sent to me for review too :)

In other sad news for Nokia this week, the 800 employees previously slated in the Q3 financial report will be let go starting in January with severance packages ranging from 5-15 months salary. While this is sad for those being fired, I think Nokia needs to make these kinds of moves to retain its worldwide smartphone leadership and compete against Apple, Google, Microsoft, RIM, and HP.

Nokia Situations turns your phone into a real assistant

Nokia Situations turns your phone into a real assistantOne of my favorite sites related to Nokia products is Nokia Beta Labs and if you visit here you can find new software and utilities to try out. Some eventually are released as full products and some end up in the virtual trash bin. One of the newest utilities I found is Nokia Situations and as described in detail on the Nokia Conversations site the software gives me some cool functionality that I have been wanting on my phones. Nokia Situations works to assist you with management of your device and shows how your powerful smartphone should be working to help you out rather than be a hindrance.

Through scheduled time, events, or days, location, or connectivity situations your Nokia can be setup to perform a combination of the following actions (list copied from the Beta Labs site):

  • Change Ringtones, make the phone go silent or louder, turn vibra on/off, and all the other profile settings.
  • Answer missed calls with SMS. Especially when you set your phone to silent, you can also make it reply to missed calls, from contacts in your phonebook, with a pre-defined SMS.
  • Save Power. Not using phone for a while, like when sleeping? Turn Bluetooth on/off or let your phone change to power-saving mode totally.
  • Change UI theme / Wallpaper. Want to make the phone look different in different situations? Change the Theme during free time vs. when you are at work.
