Samsung Galaxy S 4G Price is $199.99 After Rebate [Official]

This image has no alt text

We’d already gotten prices from third-party providers WalMart and Wirefly, but T-Mobile has gone ahead and announced their official pricing for the Samsung Galaxy S 4G: you’ll be able to grab the thing up for $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. I’d see if I could get a better deal at a third-party retailer if I were in the market for it, though. Look for this device to hit store shelves starting February 23rd. [via T-Mobile]

Galaxy S 4G Landing Later This Month On T-Mobile [OFFICIAL]

This image has no alt text

In addition to teasing us with some three dimensional details of the T-Mobile G-Slate, that we HOPE will be shown off tomorrow, T-Mobile took a moment out of their day to remind us that the iPhone isn’t really that good. Why get an iPhone when it’s only 3G on both the AT&T and Verizon versions? They’d much rather you pick up the Samsung Galaxy S 4G and tonight they provided some details to help make that decision.

First of all, T-Mobile is expecting a February launch which is good to know if you’re shopping around for your selection. A few perks TMO just threw into the mix are HD TV through T-Mobile TV, a copy of INCEPTION pre-installed on your device, Video Chat by Qik, and data plans that start at $10/month.

The Galaxy S 4G is essentially an upgraded version of the Vibrant but for full details you’ll want to dig into the press release below:

Galaxy S 4G from T-Mobile to Offer Blazing-Fast Speeds and Unparalleled Entertainment Experience Featuring Movies, TV and Video Chat
T-Mobile expands America’s Largest 4G Network to eight new metropolitan areas in South and Midwest

BELLEVUE, Wash., and DALLAS — Feb. 2, 2011 – T-Mobile USA, Inc. and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the U.S. 1, today announced the anticipated February availability of the Galaxy S™ 4G, exclusively from T-Mobile. According to T-Mobile, the Galaxy S 4G will be the fastest smartphone running on America’s Largest 4G Network™2. The Galaxy S 4G, T-Mobile’s first smartphone capable of delivering theoretical peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps, offers enhanced mobile experiences and unparalleled entertainment including mobile HD TV3 through T-Mobile TV, the ACADEMY AWARD® Nominated film INCEPTION, and T-Mobile Video Chat powered by Qik™ — delivered at 4G speeds on its 4-inch Super AMOLED touch screen display.

T-Mobile also announced the expansion of America’s largest 4G network into more than 100 major metropolitan areas, reaching more than 200 million people nationwide. In addition to expanding its 4G footprint, T-Mobile also has aggressive plans to double the speed of its 4G network in 2011, and the company expects that 140 million Americans in 25 major metropolitan areas will have access to these increased 4G speeds by midyear.

"The Galaxy S 4G pushes the envelope by reaping the benefits of our network’s unprecedented speeds and by offering groundbreaking entertainment experiences," said Andrew Sherrard, senior vice president, product management, T-Mobile USA. "We are excited to continue to expand our portfolio of 4G devices that enable our customers to have access to unique and compelling features and an optimal 4G experience."

"The Galaxy S 4G offers customers Samsung’s core premium product investments to speed, screen and content," said Omar Khan, chief strategy officer, Samsung Mobile. "Galaxy S 4G is T-Mobile’s fastest smartphone and offers Samsung’s brilliant Super AMOLED display and rich multimedia features for premium movie and TV content."

Through the delivery of faster speeds comes an enhanced experience when viewing video entertainment over the Web using services such as YouTube. In addition T-Mobile TV, a preloaded application, offers consumers access to live and on-demand mobile HD TV on T-Mobile’s 4G network, including free programming from select stations like ABC News NOW, FOX Sports, PBS Kids and Azteca America.

To further enhance the entertainment package on the Galaxy S 4G, T-Mobile has preloaded, at no additional cost to consumers, Warner Bros. Pictures’ ACADEMY AWARD® Nominated film INCEPTION which is nominated for Best Picture, Best Writing (Original Screenplay), Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Music (Original Score), Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects. Customers also have the option to rent or purchase their favorite movies and TV programs directly from the Samsung Media Hub, which features a robust collection of new releases and TV shows.

The Galaxy S 4G’s blazing-fast speeds will make sharing memories via e-mail, social networks or video quick and easy. For example, the preloaded T-Mobile Video Chat application powered by Qik enables customers to share any moment with loved ones virtually whenever and wherever they want through T-Mobile’s network or Wi-Fi. Using either the front-facing or the rear camera, which features a 720p HD camcorder, paired with Video Chat allows customers to hold video conversations with friends and family who have a compatible mobile device.

Featured as a pre-installed application, doubleTwist® with AirSync™ provides customers with a useful and easy way to auto-sync and back up photos, HD videos and music to and from their home computer. With a Wi-Fi connection, customers can easily sync their media wirelessly and at no additional cost. The doubleTwist Player lets customers enjoy their favorite tunes and videos directly from their phone while on the go. The Galaxy S 4G also comes preloaded with Slacker Radio, offering music fans more than 130 genre stations and ability to create their own custom stations for free.

With a slim and sleek design, the Galaxy S 4G’s 4-inch Super AMOLED touch screen display gives customers a vivid, sharp viewing experience, whether consumers choose to watch a movie or read a book or newspaper with the preloaded Kindle for Android application while on the go. Powered by Android™ 2.2, the Galaxy S 4G is equipped with a speedy Samsung 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird Application Processor, an ST-Ericsson M5720 HSPA+ 4G modem to enable theoretical peak downloads of up to 21 Mbps, a 5 megapixel camera, a pre-installed 16GB microSD memory card, and a 1650 mAh lithium ion battery.

Availability

The Galaxy S 4G is expected to be available to T-Mobile customers in February. Customers can visit http://galaxy-s.t-mobile.com/4G for more information.

Don’t forget we saw T-Mobile campaigning against the AT&T/Verizon iPhones almost immediately upon the Red iPhone announcement:

I know we’re a little bit biased as a collective crowd… but I couldn’t help myself:

Official: HTC Inspire 4G Launching February 13 on AT&T, $99 On-Contract

This image has no alt text

While users clamor in excitement for the upcoming Motorola Atrix 4G, it is easy to forget AT&T is launching a few other 4G devices this year, and an announcement has just gone out that the HTC Inspire 4G will be the first. The Inspire 4G will launch on February 13th at a quite the incredible price. Just $99.99 on a two-year contract. [That's the same price we saw leaked on Amazon last week, further lending credence to the $150 price point given for the Motorola Atrix 4G through the same channel.] The HTC Inspire 4G page over at AT&T is chock full of the details.

The timing of the release lines up as a perfect counterstrike for the launch of the iPhone 4 on Verizon’s network. AT&T has expressed it’s interest in beefing up their Android line now that exclusivity on Apple’s handset has run out. Don’t forget the Samsung Infuse 4G will also join the Inspire and Atrix in AT&T’s lineup. You can check out the full release below:

Sprint’s Official Answer for Techs to Give on the “Where’s Froyo” Question

Sprint spoke out recently about the Froyo updates for their devices that are still awaiting it, and they have made similar statements via Twitter. So it’s not surprising that they have an internal document that has basically the same bullet points. It seems like they are distributing this to agents in their stores and at their call centers to use for an answer to the “When I will I get the 2.2 update on my phone” question. The standard response will be the usual company lines of “Sprint works closely with our manufacturing partners to deliver updates,” and “We bring software updates to our customers as quickly as possible.” Clearly Sprint is trying to reinforce the exact same message on every front.

While this answer may not be what customers want to hear, at least Sprint is addressing the issue head-on after months of silence. The document states that the update will be announced when it is ready directly from Sprint, and that the Epic 4G, the Transform, and Sanyo Zio are all being prepped for update. Stay tuned, and we’ll bring you that information the day it’s available.

Swype Releases Official Statement on Distribution

We’ve all done it, in one way or another. Downloaded a Swype.apk file to give Swype’s amazing keyboard a try. Found a Swype.apk and sent it to our friends. But the fact is that some aspects of distribution are illegal according to Swype Inc.’s copyrights. Swype has released an official statement, directed mainly at users on XDA, about when it’s okay or not okay to distribute Swype on devices. The official statement is below.

[[Visit blog to check out this spoiler]]

Basically what it says is that adding Swype to a ROM built for a device that ships with Swype is fine, as long as it’s the same version number and all the licenses are intact and included. Furthermore, modding Swype.apks with Metamorph to change the UI of it is totally permitted, but of course the distribution falls back to the first rule. I think Swype is being fairly reasonable about this. Most companies would have someone’s profile on XDA shut down for distributing their software, but not Swype. I’d say that’s commendable. Any questions?

Swype Inc Makes Official Statement On The Distribution Of Their App

According to an article on XDA’s site, it appears that they wanted to administer a caveat to their members regarding the use and distribution of Swype Inc’s popular keyboard application, named after the company.  It appears that XDA had a hunch that some distribution laws were possibly being violated, and rightfully so.  They reached out to the company regarding the issue for some clarification and this is what Swype Inc had to say on the matter: Read More…

Official Honeycomb Video Surfaces: Android 3.0, Tablets Only

This image has no alt text

In the midst of all the CES madness it looks like someone at Google made a bit of a boo boo. Luckily for us that boo boo was posting up an official video overview of the next iteration of Android, what we have known as Honeycomb and what will be officially known as (like we expected) Android 3.0. The one major reveal that might cause cries of displeasure is that this version of Android is not only designed to look and run great on tablets, but it is also designed to look and run great on tablets only. It looks like no version of Android you have seen before, complete with plenty of soft blue accents and major UI tweaks and improvements.

The guys at Engadget were able to grab the video and re-upload for all to enjoy. All we can say is we hope this version of Android (or something very like it) eventually makes its way to mobile handsets.

We’re about to head into Motorola’s CES press event where, hopefully, they will show off their new Android tablet and a lot more Honeycomb goodness.

Lenovo LePad Official and Hybrid IdeaPad U1 Combines Android, Windows, Laptop & Tablet

This image has no alt text

There’s no denying the Lenovo LePhone was one sexy piece of mobile hardware. Unfortunately, it never reached it’s arm far out of Asia, and much of the world has been deprived of Lenovo Android goodness. Until now.

Lenovo has officially announced 2 new Android devices, both of which will eventually be available around the world – they went on sale today in Asia.

The first device is the most straightforward; it’s called the Lenovo LePad, and as you probably guessed, it’s Lenovo’s Android Tablet and iPad competitor. We’ve been expecting this one for awhile and some of its specs include Android 2.2, snapdragon processor, 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 10.1-inch screen, front-facing camera, 3G and Wi-Fi, and Adobe Flash.

Now imagine you could take the LePad and snap it into (and out of) a portable laptop framework that booted Windows 7, allowing you to instantly switch between Windows 7 and Android. What would you have then?

Well, then you would have the Lenovo IdeaPad U1, and this thing is practically the definition of hybrid:

And if you’d rather just have the LePad with a keyboard, don’t fret, because THAT device comes with a dock that accomplishes just that:

The Lenovo LePad will cost about $599 while the IdeaPad U1 will cost $1399…no word yet on the cost of the LePad Dock.

Best of Both Worlds: Lenovo’s Dual Mode Hybrid System New Two-in-One Mobile
Device Speaks Android and Windows
LePad multi-touch Android slate for mobility and U1 laptop PC base for full Windows 7 experience

CES 2011, Las Vegas – January 5, 2011: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced the IdeaPad U1 hybrid with LePad slate, a unique two-in-one device that combines the mobility of a media rich, high-definition slate featuring access to Android applications and a keyboard base that provides a full Windows 7 computing experience. Offering great performance, both separately and together for a unique Hybrid Switch dual mode capability to switch between two different operating systems, Lenovo delivers to consumers an uncompromised mobile and computing experience.

“Our IdeaPad U1 and LePad truly fits the mobile lifestyle,” said Liu Jun, senior vice president, Idea Product Group, Lenovo. “Use the light-weight slate when you’re mobile, and then simply slide it into the U1 base when you need to create and edit content. Consumers shouldn’t have to adapt their lifestyle to technology, and this product definitely delivers twice the functionality and fun in one device.”

LePad Slate – Light, Long-Lasting and Application Rich

At under two pounds and only half an inch in thickness, the extremely portable LePad, powered by a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon™ processor, keeps users incredibly mobile all day with up to eight hours of battery life. LePad is available in four stylish colors with two different textures: scarlet, white, brown leather textured and black leather textured. The 10.1-inch widescreen and rich, high definition LePad slate runs in landscape and portrait modes. Users can consume content such as video, surf the Internet, access social networks from their fingertips, as well as tap out messages and email. It also has a front camera for taking pictures or video chat.

“We are excited that Lenovo has chosen our Snapdragon processor to power the LePad slate,” said Luis Pineda, senior vice president of marketing and product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “Lenovo’s innovative 3G connected slate, powered by our Snapdragon platform, enables a high performance, always connected experience for consumers on the go.”

Built upon Android 2.2., Lenovo customized the LePad slate with an optimized Android media experience on LePad’s larger screen size, starting with an attractive four-pane easy to use interface and a distinctive Lenovo-developed push service that delivers email, news and other content in real time, eliminating the need to constantly open a browser and log in. LePad leverages the Android ecosystem Lenovo has already established in China for the LePhone Smartphone. LePad users, in addition to enjoying many preloaded applications, also have access to thousands of custom Android apps from China’s top content partners that are optimized uniquely for its large screen. Lenovo plans for LePad to support Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1, looking to provide users a more complete Web browsing experience.

IdeaPad U1 for a Complete Laptop

For users who need the full functionality of a mainstream laptop for doing content creation with Windows-based productivity applications, the LePad can slide into the U1 base. The IdeaPad U1 hybrid laptop with a full keyboard transforms the user interface on LePad into Windows 7. The base features a Windows 7 Home Premium operating system and an Intel CULV processor. With the Hybrid Switch feature, users can seamlessly change operating systems to support a continuous Web browsing experience.

Pricing and Availability

The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 with LePad will be available beginning in China in the first quarter of 2011. The LePad slate can be purchased separately from the U1 base. The LePad slate starts at approximately RMB 3,499 (approximately US $520), and the U1 hybrid laptop starts at approximately RMB 8,888 (approximately US $1,300). LG Optimus 2X: World’s First Tegra 2 Phone [OFFICIAL]

This image has no alt text

LG just announced the LG Optimus 2X which is not only the world’s first Tegra 2 powered phone, but also an Android Phone- gotta love it.

    lg-optimus-2x

The dual core processor should make gaming, browsing, apps and everything in between ultra fast and smooth. LG is claiming the clock speed is 1GHz, but I fully expect folks rooting their devices to get a lot more mileage if the Optimus 2X root method comes along quickly.

Running on Android 2.2 you can expect the Optimus 2X to have a 4-inch screen, front (1.3MP) and rear facing (8MP) cameras, 8GB memory, 1,500 mAh battery, HDMI mirroring (WHAT?), and 1080p video.

If by HDMI mirroring they mean you can actually play WHATEVER is on your phone onto whatever HD screen you’re connected… wow. Android lovers with HDMI output have been dying for this feature.

Unfortunately you won’t get it with the Optimus Z, at least any time soon, if you’re in America. The phone launches in Korea in January followed by Europe and Asia.

LG CEO said, “LG Optimus 2X is proof of LG’s commitment to high-end smartphones in 2011.” Let’s hope he illustrates that at CES 2011 in January with some announcements in the United States!

    Full Press Release:

LG LAUNCHES WORLD’S FIRST AND FASTEST DUAL-CORE SMARTPHONE
LG Optimus 2X with Tegra 2 Offers Top Multimedia Features for a Better User Experience

SEOUL, Dec. 16, 2010 — LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled the LG Optimus 2X, the world’s first smartphone with a dual-core processor. Along with more powerful multimedia features, the LG Optimus 2X’s high-performance Tegra 2 processor makes for faster, smoother web browsing and applications and lets users multitask with virtually no screen lag.

“Dual-core technology is the next leap forward in mobile technology so this is no small achievement to be the first to offer a smartphone utilizing this technology,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, CEO and President of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “With unique features such as HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) mirroring and exceptional graphics performance, the LG Optimus 2X is proof of LG’s commitment to high-end smartphones in 2011.”

Developed by graphics processor powerhouse NVIDIA?, the dual-core Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip found in the LG Optimus 2X runs at a clock speed of 1GHz and boasts low power consumption and high performance for playing video and audio. Users will experience faster web browsing and smoother gameplay compared with single-core processors running at the same speed as well as instantaneous touch response and seamless multitasking between applications.

The LG Optimus 2X offers 1080p HD video playback and recording with HDMI mirroring that expands content on external displays to full HD quality. The LG Optimus 2X can connect wirelessly to any DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compatible digital device such as HD TVs for a console-like gaming experience taking full advantage of the phone’s HDMI mirroring, accelerometer and gyro sensor. The smartphone also includes both rear- and front-facing cameras, microSD memory expandability, Micro-USB port and a hefty 1500mAh battery.

The LG Optimus 2X will be available in Korea next month with countries in Europe and Asia to follow. The phone will initially be released with Android 2.2 (Froyo) and will be upgradeable to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). The upgrade schedule will be announced in local markets in due course.

    Key specifications:

     1Ghz Dual-core Processor (NVIDIA Tegra 2)
     4-inch WVGA screen
 8GB memory (up to 32GB via microSD)
     1,500 mAh battery

     1080p MPEG-4/H.264 playback and recording
