Official Android 2.2 Upgrade for the Samsung Epic 4G Is Here

This image has no alt text

Though we’ve gotten the update in the form of leaks for several US variants of the Samsung Galaxy S, no one has seen an official rollout yet. Sprint has beat everyone in America to the punch – just as they did with the Froyo update for the EVO – and is now offering Android 2.2 for users of the Samsung Epic 4G.

SamsungEpic4Gopen

If you haven’t received it over the air, you’ll be able to manually download and install the update yourself. Instructions for that can be had below, courtesy of Brief Mobile. If you are the type who would rather wait for it to be pushed to you, then you’ll be seeing it anywhere between now and the end of the month. The process is really easy, though, so if you have been waiting for this, there should be no reason to not jump on this as soon as possible.

Instructions: Update Android 2.2 Froyo for Epic 4G

Intended for those going from stock Android 2.1 to the latest firmware.

  1. Download the required update.zip file (Mirror: http://www.multiupload.com/EBDH959PPM)
  2. RENAME the file to “update.zip”
  3. Move the file to your storage on the Epic 4G (Mount USB storage and drag the update.zip into root-highest-up folder)
  4. Boot your device into “recovery mode” (if you don’t know how: click here)
  5. Apply the sdcard update.zip from Recovery Mode
  6. Congratulations! You now have Android 2.2.1 Froyo (DK28) on your Samsung Epic 4G from Sprint!

Alternate Instructions: Update Android 2.2 Froyo for Epic 4G
Intended for those going from any other version of Android to the latest firmware.

  1. Download the required .tar file
  2. Download Odin
  3. Open up Odin and put your phone into “download mode” (Turn off your phone, wait until the lights turn off. Hold “1″ on the keyboard while powering up)
  4. Plug your device in
  5. Place the .tar file in the PDA slot
  6. Start flashing
  7. Congratulations! You now have Android 2.2.1 Froyo (DK28) on your Samsung Epic 4G from Sprint!

Official statement from Research In Motion regarding the removal of Kik

RIM logo

Well, that didn’t take long. We just received an official statement from Research In Motion regarding the removal of Kik messenger from BlackBerry App World. While the statement makes no mention of the revocation of Kiks signing keys or anything like that, it does clarify the situation a little further, which is what we were hoping for. Below is the statement from RIM regarding the Kik application:

RIM became aware of a number of issues and customer concerns regarding the Kik app and service. Following discussions with Kik, the app was removed from BlackBerry App World on November 12. Upon further investigation, RIM concluded that Kik had breached contractual obligations. Based on the broad scope and seriousness of the issues and concerns, RIM terminated its agreements with Kik and withdrew RIM’s support for Kik’s service.

Interesting developments, that’s for sure. After reading that, I’m not so sure Kik will be allowed back into BlackBerry App World. Of course, that’s just my personal thoughts on the situation, share yours in the comments.

Samsung Continuum Goes Official, November 11th for Verizon

This image has no alt text

Samsung’s finally confirmed the Samsung Continuum themselves. It’s been out in the wild for a long time, but neither them or Verizon had acknowledged its existence. (That never threw us off, of course.) They’ve just tweeted that the Samsung Continuum will be launching on Verizon November 11th as the first phone with a secondary dedicated ticker display. It looks like that’ll be the big announcement tonight, as well, as Rob and Kevin will be on hand at Samsung’s unveiling to get some face time with the device. (Please don’t sue me, Apple.)

Official myTouch 3G Froyo Build Ported to the G1, Brings Life to a Legacy Android Device

Ah, the wonders of the XDA-Developer Forums! So much good talent among the developers there! One in particular, ezterry, has ported the myTouch 3G’s Froyo 2.2 update to the Godfather of Androids, the G1.Here is the good news: EVERYTHING WORKS! It is a stable port that has all of the Android 2.2 features found on the latest myTouch 3G OTA update! The bad news: You have to have a rooted device and have a few pre-requisites such as the infamous 1.33.2005 Danger SPL and 2.22 radio. If you still have a G1, though, and have not rooted it by now, this is a very good reason to do so! Check out the XDA post HERE.

T-Mobile’s Tab Pricing is Officially Official

This image has no alt text

galaxytab_pricing

We knew what the pricing was going to be already, this just confirms it in pretty picture format. Interesting to note is that the unsubsidized pricing is $100 less than what can be found on Amazon. Which is not usually the case. I suppose that’s good news for those of you who wanted to wait; for the rest of you, sorry. Note that I tried to revisit the link to the Amazon page for the T-Mobile Galaxy Tab and got a 404.

A little bit of conspiracy theory here. I was talking with some of my former co-workers(yes, I used to work for Magenta) and the Samsung representative and they claim that they are purposefully under stocking Galaxy Tabs until the holiday season. I asked why, but I really didn’t need to. “To build excitement for the product”. I seem to recall HTC trying that very same approach with the HD2, it didn’t work out too well for them. Sure, we were always sold out for the first month, but 75% of them were returned. No, I’m not exaggerating that number.

Official Web-Based Dungeons & Dragons Character Builder Announced

Image: Wizards of the Coast

In just under two weeks, you can stop holding your breath. The Dungeons & Dragons Character Builder will finally be available for Mac users. And in keeping with tradition, Wizards of the Coast has swung a double-edged sword at the problem of cross-platform character creation. And, in keeping with tradition, D&D fans’ reactions are mixed.

What’s the big deal? Cross-platform is good, right? Well, let’s take a look at what rocks about this announcement and what’s less than cool.

Wired

Tired

  • The big complaint is that this version of the builder will require an active internet connection
  • No export feature at launch
  • Lack of customization at launch (e.g., no house rules)
  • Requires a login to D&DI
  • Built on Silverlight, a technology which Microsoft has publicly claimed it is abandoning for web application development in favor of HTML5
  • If Silverlight is the long-term strategy, it’s unlikely that an in-house mobile version will be available any time soon

What do you think? Happy that you can finally roll up a D&D character on your Mac? Concerned about the directions the D&D Digital Studio is taking? Leave a comment.

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Gets Official for November 3rd, $199.99

This image has no alt text

It’s been said time and time again, but we were just waiting on the word to come straight from Magenta. T-Mobile’s MyTouch 4G (yes, the mystery is now officially over.) will be launching November 3rd for $199.99 after a two-year agreement and a $50 mail-in rebate. (And you can bet there will be some deals on it from various other third parties shortly after its launch.)

mytouch 4g

This also puts an end to the 4G vs 3G debacle we’ve been entertaining lately. T-Mobile has every right to name their phone the MyTouch 4G, and they’re referring to their HSPA+ network as having “today’s 4G speeds.” That means their marketing campaign just got the green light without fear of just reprehension. (In other words, someone at T-Mobile probably just shouted out “Take that, Sprint!”)

The T-Mobile myTouch 4G is the latest addition to T-Mobile’s exclusive line of Android-powered myTouch smartphones. Designed specifically to deliver today’s 4G speeds on T-Mobile’s rapidly expanding HSPA+ network, the myTouch 4G will offer customers blazing fast access to websites, applications, videos, downloads and more.

The myTouch 4G is expected to be available in the U.S. exclusively to T-Mobile customers beginning November 3 for $199.99 (after a $50 mail-in-rebate), plus taxes and fees, with a two-year service agreement and qualifying voice and data plan. The myTouch 4G will be available nationwide through T-Mobile retail stores and online at www.T-Mobile.com.

The myTouch 4G will also be available nationwide beginning November 3 through select third-party dealers and leading national retailers including Best Buy, Costco, RadioShack, Sam’s Club and Target. Pricing may vary at independent dealers and national retailers.

You can visit http://mytouch.t-mobile.com/ for more information about the myTouch family of smartphones, including the myTouch 4G.

BlackBerry App World storefront gets an official launch

BlackBerry App World

We mentioned back on the 20th that Research In Motion had finally enabled online purchases of apps from BlackBerry App Word but, today was actually the official launch of the storefront. Within the official announcement Research In Motion gave us some of the feature list currently enabled on the site right now:

  • Purchase apps directly from the website
  • Edit My World accounts to sync app downloads directly to the BlackBerry smartphone
  • Read and write reviews and recommend items to peers
  • Access purchased or downloaded apps from a computer  via the My World page in the  BlackBerry App World storefront

Since we first mentioned the update to the site, Research In Motion has put a lot of changes into effect as well. Better browser support has been impplemented and things seem a whole lot smoother know overall. How do you guys feel about it though? Will you use it more often now?

Official NFL themes

Airborne Studios has just released something exciting for the 2010/2011 NFL season for all the football fanatics out there. Not one but 32 new animated themes, officially licensed by the National Football League, are now available to purchase. Turn every day in to game day, and proudly show off your love for your favorite team. Each theme is custom made including a sharp set of football icons that blend perfectly with the colors for each team. Brand new battery/signal meters and message indicators show that no detail has been overlooked. And one of the coolest features is the animated homescreen with hidden dock, configured to only show the animation when you scroll around your homescreen so battery life is conserved.

All in all I think any BlackBerry owner would be happy to have such a well built theme on their device, and any football fan would be even prouder knowing they are supporting their team by sporting team colors everywhere they go. T-Mobile Outs Official Specs on myTouch HD

TmoNews is reporting that T-Mobile just released a fact sheet highlighting everything that will make the new myTouch HD the next hot handset from Magenta.  The fact sheet contains a lot of data that we already knew however, there were a few things that caught our eyes:

T-Mobile TV which promises live and on demand programming as well as always free content from ABC News, Fox Sports, PBS Kids, Disney, and Univision.

Media room integrates music, videos, T-Mobile TV, FM radio and Slacker internet radio in a single music player.

Preloaded games which include Rock Band.

If you want to be on the official T-Mobile myTouch HD registration bandwagon, head over to their registration page.  T-Mobile is still sticking with their very vague “in time for the holidays” timeframe.

Is anybody going to wait for the HD or take the plunge with the G2? Sound off in the comments.

(Some) Official Droid 2 Global Specs Hit Motorola Website

The specs for Verizon’s next super phone, the Droid 2 Global, have landed online ahead of any official announcement from Motorola.  To be fair, these are not the full details, only enough to tease us.  Plus, we don’t have any images yet.  With that said, here’s what we’re looking forward to: a 1.2GHz, 5-megpixel camera with auto-focus and dual-LED flash, 3G mobile hotspot and a redesigned QWERTY.  Listed as up to 40GB of space, we’re assuming 8GB internal with 32GB microSD capability. The site also talks about catering to business and enterprise, which is something we’ve heard a time or two.  We can’t wait to see the official pics and full details.  What are you waiting on Verizon?

This image has no alt text

The Samsung Transform thought it’d steal all of the show today, but the Samsung Galaxy 551 isn’t having it. Word is that it’s just gone official for 389 euros and is set to launch across Europe this November. It features a 667 megahertz processor, a 3.2-inch LCD display with a resolution of 240X400, TouchWiz UI, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, DLNA support, a 3-megapixel camera, and more.

What’s more is that it has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and will be running Android 2.2. No word on which carriers will be picking this one up, but we imagine that it won’t be too bad of a deal to just pick this one up without a contract.
