Simplify CSS 3 With Online Code Generators

The latest advancements in cascading style sheets offer web designers a bevy of new tricks that once required JavaScript or were simply impossible to do. Effects like rounded corners, drop shadows, rotated elements or gradient fills are all part of CSS 3, and modern web browsers support them right out of the box.

However, while CSS 3 is powerful, remembering all the details of each element’s syntax can be overwhelming. To make matters more confusing, CSS 3 hasn’t been finalized yet, so browser makers are using browser-specific prefixes for the new attributes. For example, to get an orange to green radial gradient in Firefox, you’d use this code: background:-moz-radial-gradient(60% 50% 40deg, #866400, #FF4E28 71%).

A bit of a drag, right?

Cheat sheets help, but sometimes it’s much simpler to let an automated tool do the hard work for you. Our friends at Ajaxian recently discovered CSS 3.0 Maker, which covers all the new elements, like transitions, drop shadows and even @font-face and offers a clean simple set of tools to tweak the look on an element visually and then cut and paste the code into your style sheets.

Other similar sites include Randy Jensen’s CSS 3 Generator, the Style Master CSS Editor and CSS 3 Please.

CSS 3.0 Maker takes more of a kitchen sink approach by including a number of different effects. Sliders allow you to tweak each effect, control variables like shadow x- and y- offsets or the midpoint of a gradient without melting your brain. Once you have things the way you want them, you can either cut-and-paste the code or download an HTML file with inline style definitions. CSS 3.0 Maker also displays the browser compatibility for each new tool and takes care of all the vendor-specific prefixing for you. Our only gripe is that in some cases — like border radius — the site ignores the shorthand syntax in favor of defining each element individually, which is usually overkill.

Still, if you’ve ever struggled to remember the exact syntax of CSS 3’s new tools, CSS 3.0 Maker offers a simple solution. As a bonus, if you start watching the code change as you move the visual sliders, pretty soon you’ll be familiar with the syntax and can go back to using your text editor.

BlackBerry 9670 (Oxford) simulator shows up online for download

9670

If you’re a developer or just interested in playing with an unrealeased device simulator then this is something you may be interested in. The good folks over at BBLeaks have posted up the download links to the BlackBerry 9670 (Oxford) simulator. Pretty cool to play around with if you’ve yet to go hands on with a BlackBerry 6 device.

I’ve played with it since last night and digging through some of the files, there is a lot going on that we haven’t really seen show up yet even on the BlackBerry Torch. If you’re handy at viewing the files you’ll see that Torch Mobile has been rather busy with other things aside from the browser. Looks as though Research In Motion has had them working on a few applications. Alas, the download is not for everyone but if ya wanna look into it, at least it’s available to do so now.

Motorola Charm Shows Up on T-Mobile’s Online Store And Best Buy Mobile

The Motorola Charm looks like it might be taking to the streets soon. Best Buy Mobile has this device live on their site as “Coming Soon,” and with a price-tag of $249. That sounds like the average no-contract price, especially since we’ve already seen T-Mobile’s “Back to School” promotion labeling this device as free, after rebates of course. Battery issues have plagued this device which has led the August launch, but we might be rewarded with another color. The Motorola Charm could launch with two different color options, Cabernet or Golden Bronze. The device is said to be running the latest Motoblur which we can find on the Motorola Droid X and the upcoming Droid 2.

  • Features of the Motoblur enhancements include:
    • Updated Home Screen (7 panels)
    • Pre-loaded Motorola widgets are now resizable
    • Social Messaging enhancements through Facebook and Twitter
  • New Android 2.1 enhancements include:

    Online Artillery Slightly Off Mark

online-artillery-iphoneOnline Artillery (subtitled Medieval Multi-player Fortress Siege) takes an aggressive approach to iPhone online gaming by only pitting the player against online opponents. The online battles are generally fun and challenging, however, Online Artillery needs a bit more polish before it can be truly recommended.

Playing the game requires setting up a new account with Online Artillery. This feels a bit redundant given there are good third-party options like Open Feint for handling this task; although it may not give the developer as much control over tracking the leaderboards. Hopefully the iPhone Game Center will streamline multiplayer gaming for the iPhone/iPod touch platform through one account.

The game play is fairly solid. The object is to destroy your enemy’s castle with enormous cannon. Making a direct shot is contingent upon positioning the angle of the cannon and accounting for the wind and distance to the target. Three direct hits destroy the castle. There are over 30 different maps that will place one or more of the castles on a hill or hidden in a valley to differentiate the challenge. This really makes each match unique and keeps repeated play from getting dull. (…)

Traffic – Images of the new RIM built application appear online

Traffic - Images of the new RIM built application appear online

For some folks who are making use of the BlackBerry Beta Zone, you can now download a new Research In Motion designed application called Traffic if you are eligible. Pics of the application leaked out shortly after the announcement, as you can see above. Traffic is an app which helps you determine a few things while you are driving. One of them being when exactly you will reach your destination, sharing your location with others and your ETA and it also helps you find things that may be near by. Need to find a restaurant or gas station? Traffic can help. Or if you just simply need a map routed out for you, Traffic can do that as well.

The funny thing about this new application is that well, it’s not really all that new. If you are a person who often sorts through OS files on your PC you may have noticed the files for adding traffic have been there for quite some time. Which, could very well explain the looks of the app. It looks kind of dated and we hope that it will see a slight revamp before its release. For the sake of comparison, Traffic is similar to that of Telenavs OnMyWay application in some ways. What does everyone think? Is Traffic something you would use? More pics available after the jump. You can also read more in the forums, where this was posted.

Symantec Releases Results Of Online Safety Survey

In February Symantec conducted an in-depth survey of 2800 children and 7000 adults in 14 countries to try and get a better perspective of what kids are doing online and how aware the parents are. The survey covers Cyber-Bullying, Adult Content, Social Networking, and other areas of online activity.

Some of the information from the report includes:

    • 48% of children world wide think they spend too much time online.
    • 62% of the children surveyed said they have had a negative experience online  These range from stranger friending them to strangers trying to get them to meet in real life.
    • 95% reported that they’ve established rules of conduct for themselves online.  This includes no Cyber Bullying and informing a parent if they are being bullied.

The report also has tips from Marian Merritt a parent and internet safety advocate.

Overall the report is an interesting  look into what kids are doing online and what parents think is going on.  By the way this year parents and kids are finally in sync with how much time kids spend online.  The report is available at The Norton Online Family Report Webpage for download in several languages.

Guild Software Helps MMORPG Addicts Get Out of the House by Bringing Vendetta Online to Android Handsets

This image has no alt text

If you find it too difficult to just up and quit your MMORPG ways (I get it, it took you YEARS to get that Paladin to level 75), Guild Software is at least making it a bit easier to unglue your butt from your computer chair and stretch those legs a bit. They are bringing a native port of their own 3D space-based title Vendetta Online right to your Android handset, and is currently being optimized for NViDIA Tegra mobile processors.

It ain’t World of Warcraft, but if you just need that fix of online role paying while you are waiting at the doctor’s office or listening to a boring lecture then this game might be for you. You’re going to need a higher-end device to even run it however, and Guild Software is targeting tablet and netbook type devices with higher resolution displays, so your current phone might be able to do Vendetta Online justice (but maybe Motorola’s 2 Ghz behemoth will). No release date is set, but you can expect this one later in the year.

    Indianapolis 500 On-Line

If you ain’t first, you’re last. — Ricky Bobby

The 94th Indianapolis 500 race on Sunday, May 30, included live HD coverage from Indianapolis Motor Speedway Productions with point of view cameras from Sports Video providing ABC camera coverage from inside cars and around the track. Image-Cam provided eight Panasonic AK-HC1500G 1080i/720p switchable HD point-of-view cameras.

Image-Cam designed a proprietary remote-control system that allows the HC1500G to deliver pan/tilt views of race cars traveling in excess of 230 miles per hour. At this year’s Indianapolis 500, eight such systems were installed in different locations around the track to provide continuous coverage of the action.

You could watch the race on Race Control presented by iRacing.com with Verizon live timing and scoring at racecontrol.indycar.com. Check out this camera view.

IZOD IndyCar Series driver, Ryan Hunter-Reay gives a post-race interview about the final lap incident that involved Mike Conway and himself.

Broadcast Sports Inc provides the in-car 360 degree cameras and has additional videos on their Facebook page. Izod posted Flickr photos.

At the Andretti Autosport garage they use an Apple iPad to monitor the performance of their cars.

IndyCars are essentially a one-make or “spec” series, with chassis and engine manufacturers provided exclusively to the league in three-year cycles. Currently, Dallara provides the chassis to all teams and Honda is the sole engine provider.

Izod, the marquee sponsor, is a clothing company that produces dressy-casual clothing and sportswear for men and women, also including fragrances, and accessories.

The race was available to online viewers in high-definition at www.indycar.com. Video feeds of the race included race coverage as well as on-track and in-car footage, allowing viewers to see from the drivers’ perspective in real-time.

WFO Radio had an iPhone app with IndyCar Racing Talk streaming four nights a week.

Level 3 provided content delivery network services to support live online streaming. The live streaming is part of a deal with the IZOD Indycar Series to stream all races during the 2010 season.

“Viewership for racing has grown tremendously over the past few years,” said Jarrod Krisiloff, director of New Media & Consumer Strategies for Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which owns the IZOD IndyCar Series. “Viewers of the live stream were able to see not just the race itself, but live, in-car video feeds.”

Video feeds of the race included race coverage as well as on-track and in-car footage, allowing viewers to see from the drivers’ perspective in real-time.

All the cars carry GPS boxes for the Sportvision RaceFX system (pdf) to provide telemetry and pointers to help identify the cars for viewers.

A car’s acceleration, braking, lap position, speed, gear selection and RPMs are all integrated into the broadcast. The radios use Afar’s PulsAR-24027 wireless bridge modified to survive the demanding shock and vibration environment, with custom software synchronizing all RF transmissions. It collects statistics, five times a second, from up to 55 cars racing around the track at over 200 miles per hour. ESPN uses a radio-replay system that can record, play back, and edit radios from any of the 33 drivers.

Next up: the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, from June 11 to July 11 — In 3D!

Sony will provide 3D gear using a 3D camera rig outfitted with two cameras.

The World Cup broadcasts will be carried in the U.S. on ESPN’s new 3D network. Comcast is the first cable affiliate for ESPN 3D, when it launches June 11. A Panasonic channel called N3D, will carry 3D programming from CBS, Fox Sports, NBC and others; as well as a dedicated 24/7 3D pay-per-view/VOD channel.

Intelsat is providing on-site broadcasting services. To provide 3D distribution to venues in about 26 countries, Aruna selected SENSIO as its main live 3D events technology partner.

This June, DIRECTV HD customers will receive a free software upgrade enabling them to have access to the 3D channels on DIRECTV. Of course DIRECTV HD customers will also need a 3D television set and 3D glasses to view 3D programming.

Sony has already supplied cameras for U.S.-based 3D broadcasts of college and professional football, professional basketball, and sponsored the 3D broadcast of The Masters from Augusta this April.

    Norton Online Family Review

In March I was given a presentation of the Norton Online Family service. Having a boy of 15 and a girl of 10 who use the the desktop and the netbook frequently, I gave it a test drive.

The first thing I needed to do was set up an account at Onlinefamily.norton.com There is no charge for the service, but there are ads on the side of the page after you log in. I don’t notice the ads because they are low key and not in your face. Symantec’s philosophy behind making this service free impressed me. They believe that no family should forgo on-line protection because of economic reasons.

Once the account is set up you can start adding users. Your kids must have their own login name if you want to customize the settings for each child.

Once the child’s profile is set up you can move on to the settings. Here’s a rundown of the services available:

    • Web blocking settings allow you to choose what categories are blocked as well as giving you the ability to add custom sites.
    • Safe search ensures that no adult content will be displayed when your child searches Google, Yahoo or other major sites including YouTube.
    • Personal information protection so that Norton Online Family will block a site when your child puts in personal information, like a phone number address or a social security number.
    • Under the IM section you can block IMs until friends are approved by you.
    • Finally, Social Media will let you know if your 12-year-old daughter just set up a Facebook page as a 22-year-old.
    • You can also set up time limits for internet access

You will have to install an agent on all the computers you want to monitor. The agent is also free and they support Windows and Mac OS. Sorry Linux users, no support yet.

Overall I felt the product was easy to set up and did its job well. I’ve tried other products that only offered web site blocking and time restrictions. I think the other features Norton Online Family offers such as IM and Social Media will allow the service to grow with your children as their on-line activity matures. Let’s face facts: The price is right also.

Norton Online Family’s approach to monitoring is different from the typical “block it and walk away” paradigm. The site offers advice on how to open a dialogue with your children about their on-line activity as well as information for parents who aren’t as net savvy as their kids. This is the most important piece of the puzzle. No software will instill the ideals and behavior you want your children to have on-line . Just like in real life, you need to talk to them about what is appropriate and what is not appropriate. Norton Online Family gives you tools to help you get that conversation started.

Google to Shift Nexus One Sales to Retailers, Cease Sales Online

For all the good and bad that has come along with the Nexus One, a chief complaint has been Google’s method of distributing the handset and its (lack of) customer support. While a few carriers (mostly in Europe) have teamed up with Google to offer the N1 subsidized and in store, the large majority of customers have only been able to purchase the phone unsubsidized and online, with no chance to try it out hands-on. Along with having to shell out over $500 to get their hands on the Nexus, customers were met with virtually no support when the inevitable problems started arising.

Today, Andy Rubin has announced that this will soon change. While he stresses that the Nexus One was an innovative pioneer handset that has spurred the advancement of mobile technology, he also admits that Google’s new distribution model wasn’t so successful, so Google will be shifting the focus away from themselves as the sole channel for device sales (a move echoed by their rumored team-up with Verizon on an Android tablet).

Rubin states that the process will be two-fold. First: get the Nexus One into more retail outlets on subsidized deals with wireless carriers (but not Verizon or Sprint, lest you forget). Second: end sales of the N1 through the Google Store, instead shifting it towards a portal showcasing the latest Android phones from all manufacturers and carriers.

And now we all can say it: FINALLY. The almost immediate response to Google’s initial plans for shaking up handset distribution were met with trepidation, and after those worries turned into reality we were left wondering how long until Google quit being stubborn and let go of their dreams of unlocked, unsubsidized phones at a hefty price tag.

While it remains to be seen just how much life the N1 has left in it with phones like the Droid Incredible, EVO 4G, and HTC Desire causing mass fan-gasms worldwide, at least we know if and when Google does decide to release a Nexus Two, it will be under the same old distribution model we are all used to and just plain happy with.

Google Offering Online Video Rentals with YouTube

Google has now officially entered the Online Video Rental business using YouTube and your Google Checkout account to deliver a small selection of rental quality videos.

Google, feeling left behind by the likes of Amazon, Apple, Hulu, Netflix, and Blockbuster has decided to turn their library of videos into a streaming success and allow you to purchase video and then watch them on any device that supports YouTube.  This means your Android phone!

The selection is still scarce on comparison, but I’d expect the behemoth to very quickly increase the size of it’s library.

In fact, with a quick search on YouTube a mere 3 pages of videos showed up in the For Rent category.  Some good movies, but not enough to entice me to the service.  Some memorable names include: The series of SAW movies, Reservoir Dogs, Precious, Lord of War, Gamer, and Dogville.

A quick test of gamer revealed that the cost would be $3.99 and I would be able to watch the movie for a mere 24 hours which really isn’t long enough for online digital content.

    • Dimensions: 4.63″ x 2.30″ x 0.47″
    • Weight: 4.59oz
    • Usage Time: Up to up to 312Minutes
    • Standby Time: Up to up to 146Hours

And what you’ll get in the box:

    • HTC Incredible™
    • Standard Lithium Ion Polymer Battery
    • Wall/USB Charger
    • Product Safety and Warranty Guide
    • Quick Start Guide

The listing only mentions 16GB of expandable memory, but this is most likely just a bit of outdated or incorrect information as most other sources confirm that it will indeed be expandable up to 32GB. If you weren’t full from the days serving of Incredible stories, there is another little bit for you to chew down on.

Thanks again to the HTC Incredible thread at AndroidForums!

XM Radio Online+ Now Available To Canadian Users

XM Radio Online+ Now Available To Canadian Users

As we reported on earlier, XM Radio Online has maintained its scheduled release date and is now available to all Canadian users. Offering up many of the same channels as the SIRIUS application, XM Radio online offers a free 14 day free trial so that you may check out the services.  As it stands, if you want XM Mobile you can get online and mobile for $7.99/mnth or if you are already an XM subscriber, you can pay an additional $2.99 just for the mobile access. Still no Howard but if you enjoy others channels on XM it may be worthwhile giving it look at. The app works over 3G and WiFi so no issues there and all devices 85xx and up numerically are supported, incl Storm series.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager 6.0 Pics Show Up Online

BlackBerry Desktop Manager 6.0 Pics Show Up Online

Ok, so maybe it’s not pics. Rather, just a screenshot of things to come for BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Earlier today we mentioned that latest that Research In Motion was pushing now is version 5.0.1.37 but, shortly after that the folks over at BBnews.pl revealed the above snapshot of version 6.0.I’m liking the UI changes here. Also digging the fact it looks like RIM has placed a little more concentration on media handling.

Interesting note, see how it says podcasts on the side bar? For the longest time now the BlackBerry OS has had a default folder named "Podcasts" built into it. I always wondered what it was for considering you essentially have no way to download podcasts on your BlackBerry without a third party app like PodTrapper or using Opera Mini to bypass the download limit. Maybe a new OS combined with Desktop Manager 6.0 will change that. Pipe dreams?

More BlackBerry Slider Pics Show Up Online

In an effort to give us all a better feel for the BlackBerry slider (aka 9700a as it has shown up as… at least for now anyways as that could easily and should change), the folks over at BBLeaks have got some more pics for us to gaze over. These pics give us a look at the back end of the device as well as give us a size idea by being compared to a BlackBerry Curve 8900. As with all prerelease devices, what we’re looking at here is pre branded hardware. And while it may likely be close to “final form” the released models will have branding and such from carriers on them and will certainly look more polished. Past prerelease devices such as the Bold 9000 first showed up wearing a plastic battery door. A far stretch from the leather backing it arrived with at release. Some of you may remember the Bold 9700 was first seen with a trackball, so while pics give us a general idea, everything should be taken with a grain of salt until newer, branded hardware is spotted.

Still lots left to learn about this device as the days go by, hopefully we’ll get to see a better look as many, many questions remain unanswered here. What about the camera? Is it 5MP and making use of the liquid lense we heard? Or is it still running the old 3.2MP that has been standard. What about the screen? Is it touchscreen? OS it’s running, if any? Here’s to hoping someone out there can actually get an up close and personal look with one that actually powers on at some point. Now, with these new pictures showing up has it changed your thoughts on the device? One more picture after the break of the side by side with an 8900.
