The Way I See It CrackBerry Nation, We’ve Only Just Begun…

There’s a scene in the movie Fight Club where Tyler Durden pours acid on Edward Norton’s character and says to Edward as he screams in pain "It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we are free to do anything." Think of that article I wrote on 10 Reasons Why Google Will Buy RIM as symbolically freeing myself. It’s only in acknowledging that RIM could go away that I now truly feel free to tackle the task of leading the good fight for BlackBerry.

Here’s some more Motorola Xoom action for ya.  We’ve just got word that the latest and greatest to pass through the hands of the FCC is a WiFi only Motorola Xoom.  For those of you who have been pretty hesitant on dropping $800 bucks on the device, this has definitely got to have you wiping the sweat off of your brow.  No word yet on how much the device will run you, but we’ll keep digging deeper folks.  As a segway for the Xoom, we’ll also note that the guys over at Engadget got their hands on a video of a Xoom in Dubai, and get this, it’s a silver GSM model.  It’s not confirmed whether the US shores will see this device or not, but a man can hope cant he?  We’re speculating that since there are no 3G radios in the device, there should be a significant drop in that undaunted nightmare of an MSRP.  What do you think is a fair price for a WiFi only Motorola Xoom, and more importantly, would you get one?  Hit the source link to check out the video by our friends over at Engadget.

Motorola Droid Bionic shows up on Amazon for only $149

droid-bionic-amazon

The Motorola Droid Bionic has hit Amazon for a sweet price of $149.99 on a 2-year contract with Verizon. The Droid Bionic was one of the elite devices shown at CES, and got some great benchmarking numbers as well. The device showing up on Amazon already may mean that the device is much closer to launch than the original “end of Q2″ with Verizon as previously stated. The page seen above has however been pulled down shortly after it was up, so we’re not sure when it’s going live again.

We’ll keep you all posted! Keep your wallets ready.

Multimedia Dock for the Atrix 4G May Cost only $60?

Since CES, we’ve seen a lot talk about the multimedia dock for the Atrix 4G by Motorola. For those unfamiliar, the dock will allow you to connect your phone to your TV and stream audio and video over the 4G network to your TV via your phone. It’s been widely theorized that the dock would cost somewhere in the $150 neighborhood, and frankly — that seemed believable. But as it turns out, there may be reason to suspect that it will be way more reasonable. Mobile accessory web-retailer Frommy has a page offering it for $59.95. They have none in stock at the moment, but the fact that the page is live is a promising development.

In addition to just serving as a dock for your phone, it appears to also have HDMI and USB input ports as well. This will allow you to connect your computer to the phone while it’s docked and sync your data or transfer files. All phone functions still work fully while it’s docked, and the multimedia dock will also charge your phone. It looks like a great accessory for anyone looking to pick up the Atrix, which should be out by the end of next month.

Official Honeycomb Video Surfaces: Android 3.0, Tablets Only

This image has no alt text

In the midst of all the CES madness it looks like someone at Google made a bit of a boo boo. Luckily for us that boo boo was posting up an official video overview of the next iteration of Android, what we have known as Honeycomb and what will be officially known as (like we expected) Android 3.0. The one major reveal that might cause cries of displeasure is that this version of Android is not only designed to look and run great on tablets, but it is also designed to look and run great on tablets only. It looks like no version of Android you have seen before, complete with plenty of soft blue accents and major UI tweaks and improvements.

The guys at Engadget were able to grab the video and re-upload for all to enjoy. All we can say is we hope this version of Android (or something very like it) eventually makes its way to mobile handsets.

We’re about to head into Motorola’s CES press event where, hopefully, they will show off their new Android tablet and a lot more Honeycomb goodness.

Honeycomb For High-End Tablets Only?

Just when you thought every and all tablets were going to eventually receive the highly anticipated update from Google, Honeycomb, it’s being recommended at this time that you don’t hold your breath.  Bobby Cha, a managing director for the Korean consumer electronics firm Enspert, has stated “Google’s new Android Honeycomb tablet OS will require a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor to run properly“.  It looks like a dual core processor, like the one Nvidia produces, is at the very minimum, a requirement for honeycomb to run successfully on a majority of upcoming tablets.  This is especially disappointing to those of us who just forked over an arm and a leg  to purchase the Samsung Galaxy Tab, taking on a new two year agreement.  In addition, it’s also possible that a 1280 x 720 screen resolution might be hitting the requirement list for honeycomb too, although Cha has also stated that “Honeycomb does not require 10-inch screens…it’s going to go as small as 7 inch.” Read More…

Free Gameloft Game – Hero of Sparta, Today Only

It’s no secret that Gameloft makes some of the best Android games you can get. Usually running $4-$6, Gameloft features a lot of HD games that both look great, and play well. You may remember that they gave away a copy of Dungeon Hunter HD earlier this month. Today’s offer is similarly great, only it’s more reminiscent of Spartacus than King Arthur. Today, and today only, you can get a free copy of Hero of Sparta from Gameloft. If you’ve played Dungeon Hunter, the gameplay will feel familiar — it’s a very similar style. If you haven’t played either, catch the trailer below, or just jump straight to the source link and start downloading! At a price of NOTHING, you can afford to take a risk. (Note: the game may change on you once you select your phone. If it does, just re-select the free game from the list of games toward the bottom of the screen, and begin your download.)

For Google’s Notebook, the Internet Isn’t Everything — It’s the Only Thing

Are you ready to embrace the cloud? Gird your loins, for Google’s Cr-48 (or Chrome OS Notebook, laptop prototype or whatever else you want to call it) is itching to drag you kicking and screaming up to the cloud and into it.

Google’s Cr-48 is, as many Google projects are, a brazen experiment in laptoppery that’s so crazy it just might work. Might not, either. For the Cr-48 — or whatever it ends up being called -– is really a notebook only in the sense that it has a keyboard and a hinge which lets it fold in half.

The sell here is that the Cr-48 runs Google’s new and long-anticipated Chrome OS. Based on a skeletal Linux build, it is virtually instant-on and instant-off, and its simplicity is hard to overstate. That’s because Chrome OS really is almost nothing but the Chrome web browser.

When you turn on the Cr-48, it drops you right into the Chrome browser, with a handful of icons which are really shortcuts to web pages. Anything you can do on the web -– with Chrome on Linux, anyway -– you can do on the Cr-48. Flash, JavaScript, whatever, it’s all possible, but of course, Google would prefer you stick to Gmail, YouTube, Picasa and the like. Google’s services are tightly integrated with the Cr-48, to the point where you’re asked for your Google ID when you turn on the machine for the first time.

And be assured: None of this will work if you’re not online. The Cr-48 supports every kind of Wi-Fi, and it packs a Verizon WWAN system with a killer hook: Users get 100 MB of free bandwidth every month. That’s not much, but it can get you through the dead zone between Starbuckses. (Additional bandwidth costs up to $50 for 5 GB a month.) It won’t, however, do you any good on an airplane without Gogo: You can open a few cached web pages on the Cr-48, but mostly it’s a 3.6-pound brick when you’re offline.

Under the hood the Cr-48 has netbook guts: a 1.66-GHz Atom CPU, 2 GB of RAM and integrated graphics, all powering a 12.1-inch, 1280 x 800 screen. Battery life is impressive: at least 8 hours with the wireless on (because you’d never turn it off). You also get a sole USB port (for input peripherals mainly) and VGA output. And there’s a grainy webcam.

Sure looks like a laptop. But is it really? Consider the evidence: The 16-GB SSD drive is not user-accessible, and you can’t store any files on the machine. Want to type a letter? You’ll need to go to Google Docs (which, oddly, is not a default icon). Want to write an e-mail? You’ll have to visit Gmail. Want to view a picture or video on your camera’s SD card? Well, er, you’ll have to upload it to the web from someone else’s real computer: The Cr-48’s SD slot is nonfunctional. Remember: You are not allowed to access local files, period!

Hackers are surely going to start finding a way to mod these things to overcome their limitations –- I tricked the machine into downloading a Firefox setup file, but had no way to open it — but for now the Cr-48 is really more of a tablet masquerading as a laptop. It even has its own app store, already full of the usual suspects. Weatherbug FTW!

WIRED Caps-lock key re-imagined as a search button. Nifty instant-on capabilities. Beautiful, bright display. Epic battery life.

TIRED Useless without wireless connection; only moderately useful with one. Requires massive buy-in to the Googleverse. Printing via cloud connection to another PC is erratic at best. Touchpad — “it’s all one big button” — requires lots of retraining. Keyboard feels clammy.

Google Launches New HTML5 Version of Gmail only for Arabic Phones

Google recently launched a new HTML5 Version of Gmail that runs in the browser. This would seem convenient, except for one simple issue: the web page is only viewable if your entire phone is in Arabic. Recently, Google announced that Gmail’s new HTML5  web interface runs a user interface entirely in Arabic. Also, the HTML5 web page is not for everyone, as it only works for phones or tablets running the Android OS version 2.2.1 or higher with Arabic as their default language.

TalkAndroid.com has tried to get a glimpse of it. However, Google does not set their settings based off of Gmail, but the phone itself. It seems that the only way to check it out is to flash an Arabic ROM to your phone and then take advantage of the new 44 language support by Google.

Will the Nexus S be 2G only on AT&T?

Now that the Nexus S has formally been announced, we are being flooded with information about specs, features, early reviews, and so on. One concern that has been raised is that the Nexus S will only be able to run on AT&T’s 2G (EDGE) network. According to a tweet by @tnkgrl, the Nexus S will be 2G only on AT&T, and that the tri-band 3G is 2100/900 for Europe and AWS 1700 for T-Mobile in the US.

John Gruber from DaringFireball.net has also picked up on this, so take it for what it’s worth. We’re going to do a bit more digging around, so stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

But not this weekend. You can catch all the pigskin action right on you fancy Android smartphone for free during a preview weekend event. Wall Street Journal Comes to Android in Tablet Form Only

This image has no alt text

Most of the world’s major news outlets have made their way to Android, but the Wall Street Journal was missing from that list, for some reason. It seems they were waiting on a device worthy of carrying their digital newspaper, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab is the first device to receive that honor.

“Our strategy is to serve readers whenever, wherever, and it’s critical that the Journal’s unparalleled news and analysis are available in a high-quality format across multiple devices and platforms,” said Daniel Bernard, chief product officer for The Wall Street Journal Digital Network. “The WSJ Tablet Edition for Android continues to blend the best of print and online with an experience that showcases our strength of innovation and original delivery of content.”

Your Galaxy Tab will download the latest edition of the newspaper every morning when the physical print version gets onto the streets. This comes at a premium however: a whopping $3.99 per week. It’s not much more expensive than picking it up at a newsstand or a newsbox every morning, and to have it in digital form without having to fuss around with paper might be worth the extra charge. (And we won’t act surprised about their pricing considering you have to pay to look at content on their website, as well.)

Content on WSJ Tablet Edition for Android includes full sections from each day’s newspaper with the ability to swipe through from section to section or article to article within sections, including What’s News, Opinion, Marketplace, Money & Investing, Greater New York, Personal Journal, WSJ Weekend and WSJ. magazine. The app has been designed to download each day’s paper automatically every morning when the paper is published, resulting in more efficient download.

So if you’re the WSJ type and you have a Galaxy Tab (which has already been available in other parts of the world and is available from T-Mobile as of today), go ahead and click here to download it.

Wi-Fi only version of the Galaxy Tab postponed until after the holidays

According to this internal Best Buy document, the Wi-Fi only version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab will have its release date postponed until after the holidays.

Also, in Verizon Galaxy Tab news, while they are going to be selling with for $599 sans contract, it seems you will be required to sign up for a month-to-month data plan if you want to purchase one. So, let’s tally this up here. First, you get to spend the full $600 without any carrier subsidies, and then you are forced into a month-to-month contract?

Obviously, you would be free to cancel this contract after the first month, but then you just spent $600 on a tablet you can only use with Wi-Fi? I’m still holding out that Verizon is going to make a last minute change to their pricing structure for the Galaxy Tab, but with November 11th only a few days away, hope may be dwindling.

Latest comScore Report Shows Android with the Only Gain Since June of Top Three OS Platforms

This image has no alt text

comscore-reports-september-2010-u-s-mobile-subscriber-market-share-reston-va-nov-3-2010-_prnewswire_-1

The monthly report from comScore is in, and once again the numbers are looking just peachy keen for Android. While the leading platform, RIM’s Blackberry, saw a 2.8 percent drop and Apple’s number remained stagnant, Android made the only improvement on its June numbers with a 6.5 percent increase from 14.9  percent of all smartphone subscribers to 21.4 percent.

This means that out of the 58.7 million people in the US with a smartphone — a number which itself has increased 15 percent since June — one out of every five is an Android handset. Use of smartphone services such as web browsing and application downloads is also on the rise.

Of manufacturers, Samsung ranked at the top in terms of US mobile subscribers, followed by LG and Motorola. That equals the top three OEMs using Android in one capacity or another, while spots four and five were left for non-Android manufacturing giants RIM and Nokia.

Do we need to say it again? Android is on the rise and life is good.
