Verizon’s Galaxy Tab will have Skype after all… but only for Wi-Fi

skype-mobile-verizon

Last week we brought you a story that the Verizon version of the Galaxy Tab would not be featuring Skype. Well thankfully it seems that is no longer the case, but rather only partially the case.

Skype will in fact be available on Verizon’s Galaxy Tab, but not over 3G. This does not come as a big surprise, given that all versions of the Galaxy Tab will be using the “direct-to-consumer” version of Skype Mobile, which is strictly Wi-Fi only.

No word yet about whether or not NFL Mobile, and V Cast video will make their way to Big Red’s Galaxy Tab, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see on that one.

The USA Science & Engineering Festival — Only One Day Left!

If you’re within day-trip range of Washington, D.C., and aren’t yet planning to go to the USA Science & Engineering Festival expo today, what in the wide, wide world of sports are you waiting for? Quit reading blogs and go — the blog articles will still be there when you get back.

My kids and I went yesterday to the (free) expo and had an absolute blast. There’s stuff for kids of pretty much all ages — and if you’re having trouble figuring out what’s age-appropriate for your kids, the expo’s website lets you filter the list of exhibits by age range. It’s so wonderful to see the huge turnout the expo is getting, and the various exhibits do a great job of making science and engineering accessible to kids and to less scientifically-inclined adults. We had so much fun there yesterday we’re going back today!

And there are, as you’d expect, a ton of geeks there. I wore one of my GeekDad shirts, of course, and I’ve rarely received so many compliments on it — not so much from people who read this blog, but mostly from people who thought it was cool that I was a geek and a parent and proud of being both … in other words, people who should be reading this blog.

I’ll write up more about the festival in the next few days. But I wanted to make sure to get the call out today: If you can get yourself and your kids down to D.C. today between 10am and 5:30pm, I promise you won’t be disappointed if you do. And if you go, keep an eye out for a guy wearing a GeekDad shirt with two kids wearing Red Sox baseball caps, and please introduce yourself if you see me — I always love to meet our readers.

T-Mobile Confirms G2 Engineered to Allow Only Temporary Root

T-Mobile G2_Landscape

Earlier this week the T-Mobile G2 was rooted, but much to the surprise of many any modifications would only take hold until the handset was restarted. This created quite the stir in the root community, especially after recent releases from Motorola contained security features such as locked bootloaders to make the devices especially hard to crack. It left many wondering if perhaps it was simply an issue with the method of rooting, but many feared the reason was a bit more sinister. Turns out they were right. The T-Mobile G2 was designed to only allow temporary rooting. Read T-Mobile’s take:

“As pioneers in Android-powered mobile devices, T-Mobile and HTC strive to support innovation. The T-Mobile G2 is a powerful and highly customizable Android-powered smartphone, which customers can personalize and make their own, from the look of their home screen to adding their favorite applications and more.

The HTC software implementation on the G2 stores some components in read-only memory as a security measure to prevent key operating system software from becoming corrupted and rendering the device inoperable. There is a small subset of highly technical users who may want to modify and re-engineer their devices at the code level, known as “rooting,” but a side effect of HTC’s security measure is that these modifications are temporary and cannot be saved to permanent memory. As a result the original code is restored.”

Now I’m no expert on Android hacking, so I can’t say for sure whether or not a workaround will be found to deal with the security measure put in place by HTC. If previous work by members of the Android hacking community are any indication, I’m hopeful one will be found. If not, it looks like the days of truly open Android phones are numbered. Quite the shame.

HTCSense.com now online – currently only supports Desire HD & Desire Z

HTC is making great effort to ensure you want to choose them for your next Android powered smartphone.  Their new website and service at HTCSense.com has gone live and touts some pretty nice features should you own an HTC Desire HD or Desire Z.

  • Remotely backup your contacts
  • GPS location finder if you lose or misplace your phone
  • Remote ring if you can’t find it in the house
  • Remote lock and/or wipe of your phone if it’s lost or stolen
  • Re-route text messages and phone calls to a separate number if you leave your phone at home
  • SMS in real time via your browser instead of your phone
  • Remote installation of custom themes/skins from HTC
  • Remotely mark apps for install on HTCSense to install later

All in all, a very useful set of features that extend the capabilities of your Android device.  I’d like to see more services like this rolled out by phone manufacturers instead of heavily customized skins.  Way to go HTC – we can’t wait for this service to extend to more phones.  Check out a video walkthrough of the site from pocketnow after the jump.

Fennec Bumped Up to Version 4.0 In Name Only to Make Way for Eventual Branding Change

This image has no alt text

fennec_logo

You may have noticed that Mozilla’s Fennec browser for Android phones saw a sudden jump from version 2.x to 4.0. Don’t get too excited, the Mozilla team hasn’t released a huge update to the mobile browser using the same engine as Firefox. No, they made the change to better represent the relation between both their desktop and mobile products. Firefox is currently at version 4.0, and once Fennec is out of nightly builds and at a stable release it too will earn the same name as its desktop equivalent.

Mozilla Firefox 4 for Android and Nokia N900 will be the eventual branding change brought about to create a better link between the two products and eliminate certain marketing headaches.

Android Gmail app gets an update, but only for phones running Froyo

Android users got a bit of a surprise today from Google in the form of an update to the native Gmail application. The update adds a couple new features, including support for Priority Inbox, a “show quoted text” button, and a floating message actions toolbar similar to the browser-based mobile Gmail site.

Also, the new Gmail app is now up on the Android Market, so users can update Gmail on their own.  The catch? This new app will only run on Android phones running Froyo.

So, to all of our readers running Froyo, let us know what you think of the new Gmail app by leaving us a comment below.

Update: Some users using CyanogenMod 6 are reporting troubles installing this update.  If you are also unsuccessful, please leave a comment below with your phone model, and if you’re running any kind of custom ROMs.

Samsung Galaxy Tab will only have 3G or WiFi, no 4G

We just got done wrapping up our live blog of the Samsung press conference and were happy to hear that Samsung is planning to bring the Galaxy Tab to all 4 of the major carriers in the U.S. –  just like they did with their Galaxy S phones.  Unfortunately, if you were hoping for some 4G goodness, you are out of luck.  We are uncertain why Samsung decided to go this route, maybe it was a push to get to the market first.  In any case,  at least you can expect competitive pricing with whichever carrier you plan to go with.

Samsung Galaxy Tab with Wi-Fi Only Coming Soon [POLL]

This image has no alt text

We already know that all four major US Carriers will be carrying the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but what if you don’t want the tablet on a contract? What if you just want it as an in-home magazine of sorts to browse the web via Wi-Fi from your couch?

You’re in luck. During the live event, Samsung announced that a Wi-Fi only version WOULD be available in the near future. I’m sure that’s a relief for folks who want the 7-inches of Android goodness but without the 2-year ball and chain. Although for some, having web access ANYWHERE with the tab is a monumental victory… Google Navigation, anyone?

tabwifi

The Galaxy Tab is an interesting product proposition and it will be interesting to see how it fares this holiday season. I can’t see it slumping but how well the apps operate on the device and how many apps are custom designed for the device will play a big part in reviews, which will play a big part in the purchase decision.

Let’s see what the early poll results are regarding potential purchasers?

Grab the Droid 10 Tablet for Only $249.99!

Well if it isn’t that Android-based tablet we’ve been hearing about coming from Motor– wait a second, what the hell is this?! It seems someone has completely kanged (cookies if you get the reference) Verizon’s Droid brand by offering a 10-inch Android tablet named the – well – Droid 10. At first glance, Droid-Life almost made me soil my pants as I thought Motorola had officially announced the tablet that’s been rumored for some time now. What I was met with was disappointment and a need (or desire) to flog those responsible.

I’ll try not to do too much flogging, but I will twist some wrists. So what say ye on the specs? For RAM, we’re looking at a whopping 256MB, but that’s  not about to be outdone by this amazing CPU: a ZT-180 1GMHz processor. That’s right: a 1GigaMegaHertz processor! Oh, you thought they were done? Of course you didn’t! Let’s round this sweet package off with a 10.2-inch TFT LCD touchscreen with a resolution of 1024×600 (hey that’s actually quite decent. They could’ve just done what every other lazy tablet manufacturer does and given us WVGA.)

droid-tablet-600x269

You’ll get 2GB of internal NANDFlash storage, with the ability to expand capacity to 32GB. WiFi up to N is another plus, but where’s the Bluetooth? GPS?  Anyone out there?

To be fair, it’s not that bad of a device for the price, but when you think about a DROID phone and the high standards Verizon requires out of a phone donning the name (the poor Fascinate aside), you get a little angry seeing a similarly-named tablet that wouldn’t be able to hold a candle to even some mid-range handsets out there. If you don’t care about anything I just said and just want a 10-inch Android tablet, be my guest.

Gmail Adds More Drag and Drop Features, But Only in Chrome

Gmail users can now drag e-mail attachments out of the browser window and drop them onto the desktop — if they’re using Google Chrome.

Back in April, Gmail added the ability to drag attachments from the desktop onto open e-mails in the browser. This feature works on most modern browsers, like Firefox and Safari. Now, the same feature works in reverse, so you can grab an attachment and just drag it to the desktop without having to click the “Download” link.

This enhancement is only available to users of Google’s Chrome browser. This is an indication that it’s using some Google-specific sauce to power the interaction. Chrome uses the same WebKit rendering engine as Safari, but a different chunk of code to execute JavaScript, and the new feature doesn’t work in Safari. It does work on the Mac version of Chrome (in the Beta and Canary channels, at least) so it’s not limited to Windows users.

Browser-specific features are considered by some to be a no-no in the world of open web development. Some developers feel that new web features should work in all browsers equally to create a unified user experience. But there is an argument to be made that developers should be encouraged to innovate wherever they can as often as they can. It’s a way to accelerate the growth of web apps and to nudge other browser vendors into adopting new features. Besides, the standards upon which these new capabilities are based — HTML5 and its related technologies — are moving targets that are still being drafted, and if developers were to wait for all browsers to adopt all aspects of an unfinished standard, they wouldn’t be able to freely experiment new features.

Gmail continues to roll out new features steadily, and has become an exemplar of the iterative model for web app development. New features appear every few weeks, sometimes in one or two browsers at a time. The mobile version of Gmail is also being updated frequently to take advantage of new capabilities in the Android and Mobile Safari browsers as well as the iPad’s larger screen size.

The new drag-and-drop feature in Gmail was made available Wednesday for Chrome users. When you open an e-mail and hover over the attachment, you’ll see a little tooltip that says “Click to view OR drag to your desktop to save.” If you drag it to your desktop, the file appears on your desktop. If you click the link, it gets dumped into whatever you’ve chosen as your standard downloads folder.

It also works with Gmail’s auto-archive feature — if somebody sends you a bunch of photos, Gmail gives you the option of downloading all of them as a single Zip archive. You can drag that “Download all” link to the desktop and Gmail will Zip everything for you on the fly.

Beta Test This! Device Tune-up (T-Mobile Only)

T-Mobile is currently looking for beta testers for their new task killer, Device Tune-up .  As T-Mobile puts it, this is not your ordinary app killer.  It’s designed to run in the background and handle all the busy work for you.  It’s expected that you won’t know it’s even there or turned on.  Your phone will just run better. As a note, T-Mobile points out that “Most pre-loaded applications will not be affected by Device Tune-up.”

If you want to participate in the beta, you’ll need to have two things, the latest version (3.3) of MyAccount and a microSD card.  Beware, the app has not been tested against custom ROMS or Android 2.2 Froyo.  You can read more about the new application on T-Mobile’s message board. Once you install it, you will want to let T-Mobile know how things are working out.  Head to the Device Tune-up Beta board.

“Tether” releases public beta (Windows only)

The company “Tether” has released the public beta for the Android version of their USB tethering app. They have released a beta before, but this is the first time that they have made it available to everyone.

There are claims that the app is capable of running up to 40% faster than competing tethering apps. The company has also stated that you can transfer tether between android phones, so you get to keep it, even after changing phones. The steps to getting set up are pretty simple:

  • On your Android device, go to Settings > Applications > Development, and check USB debugging.
  • On your PC, download and install the desktop app (Windows only), then point your mobile browser to the Android app download and run the file. If asked if you’re sure you want to install, give it the go ahead.
  • Run the application on your desktop, select Android for the OS and USB for the connection method. Then plug your phone in via USB to the PC, and the two should set up a connection.

Bam! You’re tethered. Best part of all this? According to the official site’s tour page, the app uses your data connection in a way that will not alert your provider that tethering is being used, thus sidestepping any tethering fees.

It should also be noted that Tether is stating that if you already have their app for Blackberry, they will provide you with the final Android version “at a huge discount.”

Review: Only You Can Prevent Babel Rising

Babel Rising screenshots

Strike them down with lightning, wash them away with tidal waves, but the tower's completion is inevitable.

Genesis 11 tells the story of an ambitious people. Armed with a common language and purpose, they decided to build a tower that would reach to the very heavens. But, as the familiar story goes, God decided to confuse them with different languages and the massive building project was abandoned—preserving God’s sovereignty and creating linguistics in one fell swoop.

Babel Rising, an iPhone game from BulkyPix, lets you literally play God—though in this case you’re not armed with the non-lethal “language confusion” power. Instead, you get to choose from things like lightning, fire from heaven, floods, wind, and earthquakes. Oh, and the all-purpose Finger of God. As wave after wave of tiny Babylonians build up the tower, your goal is to hold them off as long as possible.

Each of the powers charges at different rates, and allowing them to charge more fully makes them more powerful, finishing off more humans at once. You get bonus multipliers for stringing together a sequence of actions, but while you’re waiting for everything to recharge the tower continues to rise. Occasionally, the Eye of God will blink and grow, and you can tap it to destroy one level of the tower—but you’re only delaying the inevitable, of course. The actions are all performed with various taps and swipes—a vertical one-finger swipe brings lightning, and two fingers rain down fireballs. Horizontal swipes cause tidal waves and wind, and shaking the iPhone causes an earthquake. The Finger of God charges the most quickly but only takes out a couple people at a time—you literally squash them with your finger.

It’s a really fun game, and pretty challenging. It reminds me a little of another iPhone app, Pocket God, but that one is more of a toy whereas Babel Rising has a specific goal in mind. The graphics are terrific, from the menus to the tiny humans carrying their bricks and stones, and the sound effects are just right. The OpenFeint connection means you can compare your scores and achievements with friends and the global leaderboards.

Babel Rising is $.99 on iTunes and includes two difficulties, Classic and Divine, but there’s also an in-game shop to buy Fury mode and Campaign mode for $.99 each.

Wired: A fun twist on the Tower of Babel, with excellent graphics and intuitive controls, all for a buck..

Tired: Not exactly Biblically accurate, but a more literal take wouldn’t make a very interesting game.

Nuke the Entire Site — It’s the Only Way to be Sure

As the Gulf of Mexico oil leak disaster enters its second month, ideas for ways to stop it are starting to get more and more extreme. This is perhaps unsurprising, desperate times calling for desperate measures, but some of the ideas seem so extreme they’re almost darkly amusing.

RT, an English-language television channel from Russia, carried a story a couple of weeks ago in which Russian scientists suggest attempting to seal the leaking well using a nuclear bomb. Yes, they’re serious. I’m not a nuclear or environmental scientist, so I’m not sure if the idea is just crazy enough that it might work, or just crazy. Check out the video for yourself, below.

As the site where I came across this (which, incidentally, is my ex-wife’s blog) points out, this really does sound like part of the plot of a B movie. As an inveterate punster, I have to say the idea has one possible benefit: According to this site, the Gulf of Mexico includes a fair number of manatees among its wildlife, and the possible radiation-fueled overgrowth of one such creature would afford us the unique opportunity to legitimately cry out “Oh, the huge manatee!”

Official Twitter App Released. Downside is it’s Android 2.1 Only.

Today, Twitter, Inc. released there very own Twitter application for the Android platform.  The down side is that the application required Android 2.1 or above.

Initial impressions are very good.  It’s has a really nice and polished interface and lots of animation, which can be turned off.  Even the birds are flying and the clouds are moving across the screen.

Twitter for Android has some serious integration with your android phone; contacts can be synchronized with the existing contacts on your phone, Google maps can be used to tweet your location and photos shared with a snap of your finger.

We’ll be checking this out once we get more chance to play with it.

For now, here’s the release info from the Twitter Blog:

When we tweet what’s happening around us, we share not only our thoughts, but also web pages, photos, videos, location…anything. Mobile phones are increasingly part of our lives, and we seem to be doing everything but making phone calls. Reading the news, watching a YouTube video, and taking photos at events like the World Cup are things we expect to do on mobile phones – sharing our experiences on these little screens should be just as easy and fast as on big ones.

When apps work well with each other, sharing becomes as second nature on machines as it does in person. The Android platform is really good at that, and we’ve worked with the Android team to make it super easy to share what’s happening. Today we are excited to announce that Twitter for Android is available in Android Market!

Twitter for Android is a fantastic application to use, and sharing any link or photo is super simple too – just look for the share button in your favorite application and choose Twitter.

Reading tweets is easy in a bunch of places on your phone. Quickly access your timeline with the home screen widget, view a tweet location on a map, and see your friend’s latest tweet in your phonebook, GoogleTalk list or any application that uses Android’s QuickContact bar.

We had a great time working with the Android team and are thrilled that Google will be open sourcing the code used in this app in the near future. We look forward to the amazing experiences developers will create using Twitter APIs in their upcoming Android apps.

This is just the beginning. We’ll be creating more great ways to read, find, and share what’s happening on your Android phone soon!

(The Twitter for Android app is available for phones running Android 2.1 and above – just scan the barcode to the right. Don’t forget, you can always visit http://mobile.twitter.com/ on your phone to use Twitter)

As soon as we get more chance to play, we’ll bring you more.  For now you can download the app from the Android Market using the QRCode below:
