New video interview with BlackBerry PlayBook Product Manager addresses PlayBook FAQs – native email, calendar, etc. on the way!

Before we left CES 2011 we again sat down again with Ryan Bidan, the Senior Product Manager on the BlackBerry PlayBook team to work through a bunch of the questions we’ve been seeing here on CrackBerry related to the BlackBerry PlayBook. At the CES BlackBerry booth many of the same questions have been getting asked, so the Inside BlackBerry Blog did a quick interview with Ryan addressing the big questions they too have been hearing.

We’ll follow up with our written BlackBerry PlayBook FAQ soon, and in the meantime you can check out the video above. There’s been a bit of a misconception going around online that in order to use the BlackBerry PlayBook that you’ll need to own a BlackBerry Smartphone, which is not the case. A native email and calendar client may not be there at launch, but it is definitely on the roadmap (likely sooner than later) for the PlayBook and new OS. In the meantime there will be the BlackBerry Bridge for BlackBerry owners that turns the PlayBook into a big screen for your phone’s email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and BBM (no data stored on PlayBook) and access is there via the web browser as well. It’s clear that the QNX-based BlackBerry Tablet OS is still in early days and it’s going to be evolving rapidly. Unlike the phones where carriers dictate OS update releases, with the PlayBook RIM will be able to push them out to consumers quickly, and I’m sure we’ll be in for a lot of updates in the early days. It’s a solid base to begin with, and it’s only going to get better, that’s for sure.

NOOKcolor is B&N’s Best Selling Product This Season

This image has no alt text

nookcolor
No surprise here, the eReader turned full-on-tablet has landed itself the number one spot on Barnes & Noble’s holiday best seller list this year.

If you were holding off on this device because you just can’t part with Kindle books, you no longer have that excuse.

Full Press Release:

NOOK™ Line of eReading Devices Becomes
Barnes & Noble’s Biggest Bestseller in Its History
NOOKcolor™ is Company’s Top Holiday Gift

Millions of NOOK™ Devices and Expansive Digital Catalog Combine to Result in Nearly One Million NOOKbooks Sold on Christmas Day

New York, New York – December 30, 2010 – Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, today announced that with millions of NOOK eReading devices sold, the line has become the company’s biggest bestseller ever in its nearly 40-year history. The new NOOKcolor Reader’s Tablet, introduced just eight weeks before Christmas, is the company’s number one selling gift of the holiday season. Barnes & Noble also announced that it now sells more digital books than its large and growing physical book business on BN.com, the world’s second largest online bookstore. With its growth across device and NOOKbook™ sales over the critical holiday selling season, Barnes & Noble has successfully established itself as a leader in digital reading.

Demand for the critically acclaimed NOOKcolor remained high following the product’s introduction in late October through the holidays. Sales have continued to exceed the company’s high expectations. In addition to a great customer response, NOOKcolor has received high praise and critical acclaim from leading technology and consumer media outlets including being named "Editors’ Choice" and the "Best Android Tablet of The Year." The company also experienced robust sales for its award-winning line of NOOK 3G and Wi-Fi devices, which feature an E-Ink display and a color touchscreen for navigation.

The company also reported record holiday sales from its comprehensive two-million-title catalog, including nearly one million NOOKbooks purchased and downloaded on Christmas Day alone. Through Barnes & Noble’s eReading offerings, customers can buy and read their NOOKbooks on the widest range of platforms, including NOOKcolor, NOOK 3G, Wi-Fi®, and using NOOK apps on popular devices including iPad™, iPhone®, Android™ smartphones and more. Among the best-selling titles of the holiday season were James Patterson’s Cross Fire, Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Confession by John Grisham, and Decision Points by former U.S. President George W. Bush.

"NOOKcolor became the gift of choice over the holidays for people who love to read everything – books, magazines, newspapers, children’s books and more – in rich, beautiful color," said William Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble. "The success of NOOKcolor, along with our unique ability to market NOOK devices to readers in our stores and through our strong channel partnerships with Best Buy, Walmart and Books-a-Million, resulted in the continued explosive growth of our Digital Content business and our NOOK line, our most successful products ever. We have a large online book business at BN.com, that’s been recently growing. And the fact that eBook unit sales now exceed physical book sales through BN.com, illustrates how quickly we’ve grown this exciting new business at Barnes & Noble."

NOOKcolor is the first full-color touch Reader’s Tablet that integrates books, magazines, newspapers and children’s books – all in amazing, rich color in a device that weighs less than a pound. It features a stunning 7-inch VividView™ Color Touchscreen and is the most social reading device ever built. NOOKcolor is available at your local Barnes & Noble store and at www.NOOKcolor.com, as well as Best Buy, Walmart and Books-A-Million stores.

Sony Ericsson to announce new Xperia product at Mobile World Congress 2011

It would appear that Sony Ericsson is gearing up to announce a new Ericsson device at Mobile World Congress Congress in February of 2011. We have no idea what they have up their sleeve, but perhaps this time they’ll graduate a phone to launching with Android 2.x rather than 1.6.

I’m sure we’ll have somewhat of an idea about what they’re revealing before February, so stay tuned.

Internal Best Buy Product Listing Reveals Nexus S Specs, Confirms T-Mobile as Carrier

This image has no alt text

NexusSSpecs

A Nexus S day wouldn’t be complete without a leak detailing a few specs that we can expect when the next Google-branded handset launches in the coming the weeks. While this particular shot remains mum on goodies such as processor speed and internal storage size, we get a detailed look at the handsets radio bands, which, just as expected, are primed for T-Mobile’s network. EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 and HSUPA 900/1700/2100 bands are supported, the latter capable of up to 5.76mbps in uplink and 7.2 in downlink speeds. Still, no HSPA+ is present for the carrier now claiming it constitutes a 4G network.

The 5.0MP camera suggested by pics uploaded by GT-i9020 devices is confirmed on the spec sheet, and the phone will pack a 1500mAh battery. Still missing are all the juicy details that could make or break this phone in the minds of many, but we are digging deeper for more dirt.

Home AV Product of the Year: Netflix Streaming

Photo: Jens Mortensen, Everett

No matter how much you paid for that 72-inch tyranno-vision TV with 9.2 surround, it’s not worth squat if there’s nothing to watch. That’s why our 2010 pick for the living room isn’t a TV or a media player or a booming array of speakers. Hell, you can’t even touch it. Even so, we’re completely grab-hands for Netflix Streaming. This was the year Netflix Streaming came out to play. With more than 20,000 movies and TV shows, completely free to subscribers, viewable on more than 100 devices and counting (what’s up, Apple TV?), Netflix is well on its way to fulfilling the promise of digital media: whatever you want, wherever and whenever you want it. But it’s the little touches that really blow us away. Want to pause an episode of 30 Rock on your TV and finish it tomorrow on your computer? You got it. Didn’t catch why everyone’s laughing at Tracy? Just slide the scrub bar to rewind. Blu-ray disc has a 30-day wait? Stream that sucker in HD, right now. Suddenly, checking the mailbox for the little red envelope seems, well, primitive.

Mobile Product of the Year: Apple iPad 3G

The laptop is at its end. You may have already purchased your last one. We’ve touched the future, and it feels a lot like the iPad. The gesture-based interface is instantly understandable and better than anything else we’ve tried—ever. It’s addictive, and we find ourselves attempting to swipe and tap and stroke the displays on our desktops and are disappointed when they ignore our caresses. But the deep hotness here is the Internet everywhere—3G flowing through a rich, eyeball-friendly screen on a device lighter than, well, some issues of this very magazine. After just a few months, we already feel genuine affection. We loved it when we checked into our flight from the taxicab, navigating drop-downs that would have been too tricky on a phone. When we used it to sidestep the hotel’s exorbitant Wi-Fi fees. When we carried it to our brother’s hospital bedside, where the Netflix app helped him forget his pain. We love it every time we bring up a map at the trailhead, every time we find a new recipe on Epicurious, every time we watch a game on MLB at 35,000 feet. Sure, it could be improved: Give it a camera, a supersharp Retina display, and more data-plan options, please. But don’t copy everything iPhone; we’re fine keeping the antenna on the inside. And seriously: Liberate us from AT&T. But for now, this is it. If you don’t have one yet, you will soon enough.

Google TV In Stock at Best Buy, Check Out their In-Store Product Guide

This image has no alt text

googletv3

As reported earlier Sony’s line of Google TV products — the aptly named Sony Internet TV — began arriving in stores today, and Best Buy isn’t sitting on their stockpile. Nope, as expected the lineup of products featuring four HD television sets and a Blu Ray player has gone on sale. Best Buy is ready to start these moving off the shelves, and given the Google TV concept (and the various available devices carrying the platform) might be a bit foreign to some the retailer has created a succinct product guide to help curious buyers make a decision as to which format suits them best.

googletv2

As of right now it looks like only Sony’s Google TV offerings are available, though we expect the Logitech Revue should be touching down any day now. Anyone catch the fever and make the purchase already? Or are you planning on waiting it out until the early adopters report in? Check out the gallery below for a few more images.

Is the Nokia N9 the next flagship product?

Nokia has been pretty clear that the upcoming Nokia N8 device is NOT its next flagship product. That said, we haven’t heard any official word about what actually is the next flagship to follow the Nokia N97. I am hoping we hear something about this at Nokia World in a few weeks and according to what was posted by Clinton Jeff on ZOMGitsCj it may just be the Nokia N9 MeeGo device. If it is, then that will be quite exciting as these leaked pictures show a device with a QWERTY keyboard that reminds me a lot of my MacBook Pro keyboard. You know if it runs MeeGo then I will be buying one to replace my N900. It is pretty clear this is an actual Nokia N9, but it still is not clear if this is some kind of prototype or if it is the real deal.

Is the Nokia N9 the next flagship product?Credit: ZOMGitsCj

It looks like it builds on the N8 metal form factor with that cool N97/N97 mini slide and tilt up display. The keyboard looks awesome to me with well spaced keys, large space bar, directional arrows, dual Shift keys, and more. I WANT THIS, do you?

Review: System Mechanic Is a Nice Product, Especially For Younger Computer Users

Several months ago, I ranted a bit about the problems I had with my Vista desktop computer. After that article, I was contacted by Michael Simpson  of Iolo Technologies about their product, System Mechanic.

System Mechanic is a an overall system cleaner. I thought it was definitely worth trying, especially since the eldest minion, my teenage daughter, often forgets to do what she’s supposed to do with basic programs like CCleaner, by Piriform. I wanted to see if there was a better way to keep her PC healthy.

I  downloaded copies of System Mechanic on three computers: the newly-upgraded Windows 7 desktop, the Windows XP desktop used by the eldest minion, and the Windows XP desktop used by the youngest son, the tech genius minion.

The tech genius minion was the most skeptical of the three of us about System Mechanic. His objection was that you could download free programs that would do everything that this program does. He finally agree to try it after seeing it in action on my computer.

Downloading was simple and I had no glitches. The first full scan took several hours but I was able to keep the computer up and running during it without suffering any significant loss of processing speed.

Once the full scan was done, the program recommended a number of repairs.

Now, here’s where I really started to like it because System Mechanic explained both what it had found and why it needed to be fixed. I’m not a computer or tech expert thought I’ve learned bits and pieces along the way. So having a program explain, in simple English, what it was doing was not only a nice feature but it also taught me something.

After the tech genius minion saw the list of repairs that System Mechanic recommended on my desktop, he changed his mind about it. He still believes that you could get free programs to do what it does but it would take several different programs and they wouldn’t do it as efficiently as this one program. He wanted me to say he thinks it’s significantly improved his processing speed.

But here’s the part I really, really liked: you can set System Mechanic to run automatically in the background.

If you’re careful to remember to clean your PC every day, then this is not a huge advantage though it’s nice.

However, if you have kids using computers in your house, chances are that they are much less careful.

To the left is an example of what the screen shot will look like after System Mechanic finishes analyzing a PC.

For my teenager, I especially liked that it cleared away unnecessary start-up items. I know, she can do it herself. But she rarely does and it’s added protection against a program automatically setting itself to run.

If you click on the “options” tab, that’s where you enable all this to run in the background.

The program costs $19.95 a year of upgrades or $29.95 for two years of upgrades, both including the program itself. I did receive my copy for free but after watching it in action for over a month, I’m definitely going to buy it when my current subscription is up.

I like the convenience, I like that it could be uploaded to three different computers, and I like that it showed no difficulties/clashes with the anti-virus programs that are running on the various computers.

And I really like that the XP computers are running better. I can’t say with certainty how it’s affected Windows 7 processing speed because I uploaded System Mechanic only a week after I started using Windows 7. What I can say is that my desktop so far is working far better than Vista. Part of that, I think, is the cleaning done by System Mechanic, especially the way it cleans up after my kids use my desktop.

Competition: Design a Geeky Product Using Ponoko and Get it Made for Free

Geekdad/Ponoko/Sparkfun competition

We’ve mentioned Ponoko.com (the world’s easiest making system) here on GeekDad a few times over the last few months, so imagine how excited we were when they contacted us with an offer of a fantastic prize for a design competition?
The competition ties in with the launch of a new extended materials catalog that includes electronic gadgetry from SparkFun, as well as their usual timbers, plastics, fabrics, metals and other sheet materials.

Pepe Chair by Stuff

Pepe Chair by Stuff

Have you got a bright idea for an electronic masterpiece, a gadget, a gizmo or even a work of art? Maybe you love the idea of getting one of your kids doodles made into a 3D toy? Maybe you want to make them a unique piece of furniture? Or, maybe, just maybe, your favourite cat just needs a special shelf all to himself.
Whatever your thinking is, submit your best idea for a product to be made using Ponoko and electronics from SparkFun and you could get it made for free.

To enter the competition, post your idea to the GeekDad flickr pool and tag it ‘ponoko’. You can post sketches, product photos, or final design images to flickr. Or, if all you have is a description of your concept, leave it in a comment below. A Top 10 will be chosen by a panel of judges from Geekdad and Ponoko, and then we’ll set up a poll so that all you readers out there can vote for the overall winner.

Owen by kyle koch

Owen by kyle koch

It’s the first time Ponoko has offered non-sheet materials. And what’s more, they’re adding the entire SparkFun inventory list to their catalog at the same prices as buying direct from SparkFun. This means you can now source all of the parts you need to make your geeky products, all from one place. There’s no change to the way Ponoko works, you upload your design and select flat sheet materials. Then you have the new option to select SparkFun components to add to your order. You’ll get a total price, you check out your order, and all of the items will be delivered to directly to you.

More than 50,000 user generated goods have been made so far using the Ponoko system. See what others have made and get inspired in the showroom.

One thing you need to know. To get something made on Ponoko, you’ll need to be able to submit your design in an EPS or SVG format. There’s plenty of ‘how to‘ information on the site to guide you, but if you get really stuck, we can help out with the winning entry.

You’ve got four weeks to get creative. Just make sure you post your idea the end of July, the closing date it the 31st.

Featured Product: Seidio Extended Life Battery for HTC/Google Nexus One

The battery life in the HTC/Google Nexus One is pretty good, but it could be better.  I’m getting a good full day out of mine with medium to high usage and just occasionally getting a point of concern where I plug-in just to be safe.

So how about a little bit more battery life in the form of a Seidio Innocell 1600 mAh Extended Life battery?  Not too much more capacity than the standard 1400 mAh battery that ships with the phone but enough for a few extra hours of phone usage.

You could opt for the Seidio Innocell 3200 mAh if your a serious traveler and need lots of extra time between charges, but it does add 6mm to the thickness of your Nexus One with a larger back cover to accommodate it’s size.

The Seidio Innocell 1600 mAh Extended Life battery is available now from the AndroidSPIN store and is becoming a very popular purchase.

If you decide to go and purchase any products from the AndroidSPIN store, write a review of the products and submit them to AndroidSPIN to get your name in lights and a chance to win a discount on the product.
