Play.com lists LG Optimus 3D and Sony Xperia Play – Pricing and Release Date

Play.com, a British retailer, has these two highly anticipated phones listed with release dates on their website. We’ve seen several anticipated phones listed at overseas online retailers lately, so it’s not really a surprise when there’s 2 more. However, these two phones are probably a little bit sought after, the LG Optimus 3D being dual-core and offering the first ever 3D glasses-free display, and the Xperia Play the Playstation licensed gaming phone. Both phones are listed sim free and unlocked, the Optimus is listed at a price of £514.99 (about $830) with a release date of April 25th and the Xperia Play listed at £519.99 (about $840) and will be available March 28th.

Of course this is all subject to change especially with all the fluctuations in release dates and pricing we’ve seen from other phones recently. Still no word on what we can expect once these phones hit US shores.

Asphalt 6 Awaiting the Green Light for Release, Could be Soon

This image has no alt text

If the recent launch the Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD purchase page on GameLoft’s website is any indicator, the game could be nearing a very imminent release. The Asphalt 6 page was first discovered while fishing around the landing page for Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus, another recently launched GameLoft title.

The new edition of Asphalt will feature even more racing action complete with 42 cars and bikes from Ferrari to Ducati, new courses around the world including L.A., Tokyo, and the Bahamas, and multiplayer supporting up to six players. No telling when it will go full-on live for purchase, but we’d expect it to be soon.

Motorola XOOM Release Date Pegged for Feb. 17th?

This image has no alt text

More Motorola XOOM news for you. Some shots of Best Buy’s internal system shows the Motorola XOOM launching February 17th, but for $699.99 instead of the $799.99 we saw in Verizon leaks late last week. It’s important to note that Verizon allows their retail partners to set their own price for the device, which would describe the discrepancy. We’re just over a week away from February, so we should see soon enough – through advertisements – whether or not these rumored release dates will stand true. [Droid-Attic via A&M]

Kongregate Pulled from the Market One Day after Release For Violation of Developer Distribution Agreement

This image has no alt text

We hear almost regularly of Google pulling certain Android apps from the Market. Though they generally are pirated wares and malicious programs, every once in a blue moon a big name app will get the axe, as was the case with Kongregate. Kongregate, if you recall, just reached the Market yesterday along with 300+ Flash-based games in tow. As the Android Developers Distribution agreement doesn’t allow for the distribution of apps that link to downloads of other apps — and as someone working on the Kongregate app either overlooked or ignored — it has been yanked right out from under our collective nose.

All is not lost, however. Just because the app isn’t allowed to be moved through the Android Market doesn’t mean it isn’t perfectly fine to distribute through other channels. The app can still be downloaded from Kongregate’s website and installed on your phone manually, so all is not lost this time.

Firefox 4 Enters Home Stretch With Beta 9 Release

Firefox 4 beta 9Mozilla has released a new beta version of Firefox 4, as the next major update for the popular web browser nears completion. Firefox 4 beta 9 is primarily a bug fix release, though there a couple of small new features.

If you’d like to take Beta 9 for spin on your desktop, head over to the Mozilla beta downloads page. It’s been a very long development cycle for Firefox 4 — the final version isn’t likely to arrive until the end of February — however, the enhancements being made over versions 3.5 and 3.6 are substantial.

Fortunately for early adopters the beta releases are stable enough to use in day-to-day browsing, so it’s not like we’re waiting a long time for nothing. We can reap the rewards well before the official release date.

On the Windows platform, beta 9 now ships with the tabs-in-the-title-bar feature we covered earlier this month. Firefox 4 beta 9 also includes support for IndexedDB, which allows approved sites to store data on your computer for offline use. Other improvements include an overhaul of the bookmarks and history code, enabling faster bookmarking and improving Firefox’s startup performance.

The best news for those eagerly awaiting the final release of Firefox 4 is that beta 9 has squashed some 660 bugs. Indeed, beta 9 is among the fastest and stablest betas we’ve used, but it’s still not ready for prime time. Problems remain with the new tab-sorting interface — dubbed “Panorama” — and there are enough other small problems that it looks like we’ll see a beta 10 before Firefox 4 is official.

So far Mozilla is sticking to its “when it’s ready” slogan and has not set a final release date for Firefox 4. With the latest nightly builds already renamed to beta 10, you can expect one more beta. After that there will be at least one release candidate, which pushes the final release of Firefox 4 well into February.

Rubin: Next Android Release will be Ice Cream Sandwich

Image: Jeff Golden

We all assumed it’d be Ice Cream, but, admittedly, an ice cream statue might look a lot like a frozen yogurt statue. TechCruch is reporting that in a conversation about last month, Android’s Andy Rubin let slip the code name Ice Cream Sandwich in reference to the Android release that comes after Honeycomb.

He just mentioned it in passing, and he has in past misdirected us in such matters, referring to the release currently known as Froyo as “Flan” back in 2009, so who knows what we’ll end up with. Icing?

WiMAX – Release 2.0

More than 100 telecom operators from around the world are meeting in Taipei today to set a new standard for WiMAX802.16m. The specification is said to enable 120Mbit/s downlink and 60Mbit/s uplink in an urban scenario using 4×2 MIMO (Multiple-Input/Multiple-Output) antennas on a 20MHz-wide channel.

Roger Marks, Chairman of IEEE 802.16 Working Group, will host the Taipai WiMAX conference. Final approval of 802.16m (pdf) will let manufacturers pre-install the gear that can operate on 20 Mhz wide channels, twice that of the existing 802.16e. The update will still be compatible with 802.16e, available since 2005, and should increase speed about 4 times.

An ITU committee will finalize IEEE 802.16m this March following technical meetings in Taipei this week. The first 802.16m dongles should be available to consumers in late 2011, with more wide-spread commercial deployments starting in 2012.

The driving force behind the development of 802.16m is capacity,” says Intel’s Jose Puthenkulam. “As you start to add more use, you start to see more capacity constraints. This will provide capacity for operators to grow their networks.”

Features of 802.16m include:

  • 1Gbit/s in low mobility scenarios
  • 100 Mbps for mobile use
  • Multicarrier operation
  • Extended MIMO support
  • Femto Base stations
  • Fractional Frequency Reuse
  • Multi Base station MIMO
  • Relay stations

Self-configuration and self-optimization can automatically deploy 16m base stations, says Huawei, simplifying network deployment and reducing costs. With enhanced MIMO, 16m can support a maximum of 8T8R configuration – that’s eight transmitters and eight receivers. While a single carrier can have up to 20MHz channel bandwidth, 100MHz bandwidth can be realized by aggregating several 20MHz channels.

The WiMAX Forum has started the WiMAX Release 2 project, to test for interoperability between different vendors.

Taiwan’s government-funded Industrial Technology Research Institute is working on ways to extend 802.16m to the 10 local companies with WiMax interest, said Song Ting-chen, an engineer with the institute. Possible takers are Acer, HTC and Foxconn, Song said.

Taiwan plans to invest NT$6.6 billion in a WiMAX development project that will run through 2013. The project aims to create 20,000 job openings and attract 2.2 million WiMAX wireless technology users.

The number of WiMAX service subscribers worldwide had increased to 13 million at the end of 2010 from 9 million in the second quarter of last year, according to Taiwan’s Market Intelligence Center (MIC).

Dell’Oro predicts global LTE deployments will exceed $6 billion by 2014, with annual revenues of the overall annual infrastructure market revenues forecast to reach $43 billion over the next 5 years.

The five biggest telecom equipment manufacturers in the world, Alcatel Lucent, Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, Huawei and ZTE aim to get a piece of that action.

ABI Research says more than two billion of the world’s population is now being covered by high-speed data networks, with more than 500 3G networks, and over 300 WiMAX and LTE announcements to date. World-wide, mobile devices with integrated wireless broadband are expected to top 2 billion by 2014, according to research firm In-Stat.

PlayStation Phone slated for spring release, according to Japanese paper

We all know that the PlayStation phone is coming, but so far it’s been one big giant question of when. According to Japanese paper Asahi Shimbun, the device is currently slated for a spring release in North America and Europe. This is a rough estimate that we’ve heard before, so the report isn’t exactly breaking news (nor is it anything official).

Perhaps we’ll get some kind of announcement at CES next week, but until the official word is given, it’s probably best to just wait patiently.

What are the odds we see a Playstation branded Ericsson handset revealed at CES in January 2011, or perhaps at Mobile World Congress? I’d have to say it’s looking pretty good considering the responses given by Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg, where he said Sony Ericsson would make a lot of “noise” at the Congress.

When asked by the Wall Street Journal about all the rumors surrounding the “Playstation Phone”, Nordberg simply replied “There’s a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere”. Nordberg went on to say “the future might be brighter” when asked why there hasn’t been any reveal by Sony over the red hot rumors.

Sounds like we should be expecting to see something very soon from Sony.
