Google’s time to Flex With Gingerbread Release

It’s always a heated debate, the benefits of iOS over Android, or Windows Phone & over Blackberry, or any combination of however you look at it. But one problem that continues to come up, and with good reason, is the different form factors with Android. I don’t know if this is from manufacturers trying to make their devices too unique, thus giving carriers he feeling of diversity for their customers, or just plain out the worst part of open source in general.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge supporter of open source, as well as Android, but I think it’s time for Google to start flexing here now that they have market domination penetration.

I don’t think Android should be on 1 single form, like the iPhone or iPad, that’s just too restrictive. I do however think that manufacturers who want to put out a crappy featureless device running Android should be prevented by Google to begin with, and give the manufacturers and carriers a set of guidelines, or default “must-have” features that every Android device should have minimum.

I think it’s time Google, you have the power…if you build it, they will come….wait, they already built it.
What do you think everyone….should we make sure every Android that comes out going forward has front and rear cameras, 1GHz CPU, 8GB onboard storage, 1080p HD video, flash, 32GB micro SD support, Wi-Fi 802.11n, Android 2.3? Feel free to add features you think should be “standard”.

I don’t think that’s asking too much, do you?

New Beta Release Gives Firefox a Shot of Jäger

A new beta version of the next Firefox browser has arrived.

Mozilla released Firefox 4 Beta 7 on Wednesday. Unlike the last couple beta releases which mostly just tidied things up, this release is a substantial step forward. Most notably, it includes a new JavaScript engine called JägerMonkey that give the browser a performance boost on script-heavy sites.

It has better support for web graphics and fonts, and it has been deemed complete enough for add-on developers to begin porting over their creations from older versions of Firefox.

If you’re a beta tester already, you’ll see an automatic update today or Thursday. If you’d like to download beta 7 for Windows, Mac or Linux, you can do so from Mozilla’s beta site.

Wednesday’s release comes on the heels of the recent announcement that Firefox 4 won’t be ready until early 2011. Mozilla’s release dates have always been somewhat loose, but the last update was over a month and a half ago, and we were originally expecting the browser to arrive some time between October or January. Now, it looks like Firefox 4’s release date could stretch out as far as the second quarter of next year. It’s a blow to fans of the open source browser, especially since Firefox is seeing increased competition from Chrome, which shifted to an accelerated release schedule earlier this year, and from Internet Explorer 9, which entered a public beta phase in September.

The silver lining here is that it’s looking like Firefox 4 will be much different than 3.6, the current version, and that the update will be worth the wait. Also, the beta releases have been remarkably stable, and, with very few exceptions, are capable enough for every day use.

For the full list of what’s new, check out the release notes. Here’s what has us the most excited.

The enhancement sure to make the biggest splash is Firefox’s new JägerMonkey just-in-time JavaScript compiler. Complicated, JavaScript-heavy sites like Facebook and web apps like Gmail will be more nimble, and you should see a big speed increase on games and demos that previously only impressed those running Chrome or Safari. It’s a rewrite of the TraceMonkey code that powered previous versions of Firefox (love the naming convention, by the way) and you can read more about the change on Mozilla engineer David Mandelin’s blog.

The new Firefox release has expanded support for 3D graphics in the browser using WebGL and some more hardware acceleration (if you have the right hardware).

Something else to look forward to in this beta is more support for the OpenType, a font format that allows for richer, more “book like” typography on the web. For years, magazine designers have been moaning in their Rob Roys about the limitations of type on the web. And while super-pretty print-quality type treatments on web pages are still a ways off, OpenType is one of those technologies that’s getting us a whole lot closer. OpenType supports some really fancy stuff, like ligatures and swashes. If you’re not a type nerd, this post from John Dagget will give you a good overview of why OpenType is blowing minds and breaking hearts. Or, just visit this page and play around with the text — click on a word and start typing.

Firefox 4 beta 7 also has an Add-on API that’s stable and reliable, so Mozilla has given add-on developers the green light to start updating their add-ons to work in Firefox 4. If you were waiting to join the public beta program because of that one add-on you can’t live without, you’ll want to keep your eyes open, because now is the time the serious add-on update work begins.

Finally, Mozilla engineer Josh Aas tells us about some crazy voodoo going on in the Mac OS X version of Firefox using the operating system’s native tools.

Adobe Flash Update Hints at Android 2.3 Gingerbread SDK Release

As mentioned in Adobe’s recent security advisory, a Flash 10.1 update is expected on November 9th to fix a security issue. While we’re looking forward to that, our attention has been drawn to a new notice that appeared on the app’s description page via the  Android Market:

ATTENTION:  Please install the upcoming 11/9 update (ver. 10.1.105.x) to ensure that Flash Player loads properly with future OS updates.

Is Adobe hinting at the rumored Gingerbread release this week? There has been a lot of talk about the possible launch of the Gingerbread SDK on November 11th. With that said, it seems like Adobe wants to prep our devices for the new OS update.

Interesting isn’t it? It looks like Gingy is almost out of the oven. Stay tuned for some interesting updates during the week.

New JQuery Release Adds JSLint Support

The popular jQuery JavaScript library has released an update to its current 1.4 release. The latest version, jQuery 1.4.3, is relatively minor update, but includes some speed improvements and several welcome new features including support for JSLint, HTML 5 data- attributes and a major rewrite of the css() module.

If you’d like to update to the latest release and test your code against jQuery 1.4.3, you can download it here (or here, minified). As always you can also load the code directly from Google’s CDN.

Perhaps the most important part of this release is the JSLint support. While Douglas Crockford’s JSLint tool — which is designed to find a multitude of JavaScript problems in your code — proudly proclaims it will “hurt your feelings” (and it will), it’s also a great way to debug your code.

According to a blog post announcing jQuery 1.4.3, the jQuery team will be using JSLint to prevent regressions in future releases. Of course, it also means that you can use JSLint in your own jQuery-based scripts without having to wade through jQuery errors.

One thing we should note though is that the jQuery team has made a few minor changes to JSLint to suit the “particular development style” of jQuery code. Most of the changes are minor, and you can read the full details in the jQuery style guide.

Here’s a video of jQuery creator John Resig showing off the power of the library, including an overview the latest enhancements (and those still to come) at the Future of Web Apps conference earlier this month in London. The video comes courtesy of the conference’s producers at Carsonified. Check out their Future of Web Design conference in New York next month.

The Sun tabloid in UK to release Bizarre Android App

The Sun in UK has announced it’s new Android App “Bizarre” to be released later this week.

The app will showcase articles and content based from its tabloid showbiz section.

Given the fact this app will center around what we call “celeb gossip”, it’s a bit surprising that they chose to go with Android to release their app rather than the iPhone market, considering every movie or music video we see has an MacBook on display. I guess that means Android is not only known for its practicality, but as it seems, also for its celeb appeal.

Vodafone UK delays the release of BlackBerry Torch as well

Vodafone UK

At this point it seems if you’re on any carrier other then AT&T chances are your purchase of the BlackBerry Torch is going to be delayed. While we can’t say exactly for certain the reasoning for it, it’s certainly no longer just bound to Canadian carriers any more. Vodafone UK, which was set to release the BlackBerry Torch 9800 on September 27th has now updated their website to show that orders will not ship until October 1st. I’m inclined to believe it’s so that the OS’ can be updated on the devices but, that of course hasn’t been proven as of yet. In any event, you can still pre order the BlackBerry Torch on Vodafone UK. Hit the link below to get started.

Press Release – Thales shows new TouchPMU on Android OS

Thales has introduced a new Touch Passenger Media Unit (TouchPMU) which will run on Android OS. The unit is meant to give the passengers aboard flights more control over in-flight available systems, games, menu ordering, and seat controls all through a touch screen interface.

I only hope that someone develops an app that can make the seats more comfortable in coach, or perhaps change the smell of the person beside you after a hot trip from Mexico.  From the press release:

WAEA Long Beach, CA, September 14, 2010 – Thales, a leader in In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) and connectivity systems, unveils a new product called the Touch Passenger Media Unit (TouchPMU). Designed to be both a stand-alone media access device and a controller for the seat display, the TouchPMU is a menu driven, touch screen unit that carves out a new product category that will transform the passenger experience adding multi-task capability and more functionality.

Built on the Android® operating system, the TouchPMU will be able to host endless applications. Its mature, open source, web-based platform make it easy to integrate functionality and leverage existing gaming and application resources. As a stand-alone media access device, the TouchPMU locally stores a wide range of applications independent of the new TopSeries system. This allows passengers to engage in activities such as watch moving map flight information, order food and beverages, play games, take a survey, shop and even chat onboard while at the same time engage with the seatback menu options. As a controller for the seatback display, the unit enables the passenger to browse all system functions through an intuitive touch screen interface.

Virgin Mobile to release Samsung Intercept

Virgin Mobile is gearing up to launch the Samsung Intercept in “the next few weeks”, according to Virgin’s facebook page. Sprint currently already offers this model on its lineup, and need not worry about competition, since Virgin Mobile is owned by Sprint.

The Samsung Intercept may not be as wonderful as big brother HTC Evo  or Desire HD, but it’s sure to attract some attention from its existing Virgin customers who are looking for a good – and possibly even free – upgrade package.

Yes, time to dust of those Nokia flip phones and move to Android! Or, at least, get them ready when Virgin says “GO”!

Amazon changes Samsung Galaxy Tab to £599 release date Nov. 1

Amazon UK has updated their listing of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, with a new price of £599, with a listed release date of November 1st. While this may still be quite a lot for the 7″ tablet, it still isn’t as much  as it was. With it being from Amazon, hopefully the pricing and availability will be more accurate than some we’ve seen thrown out by the plethora of other third-party retailers.

What price would you like to see Samsung’s up-and-coming new tablet at? Be sure to let us know in the comments.

About the Rumored Sprint Release of the Galaxy Tab — It May Have 4G

This image has no alt text

galaxy-tab3

Adding on to the rumor of a November launch for the Galaxy Tab on Sprint, BGR is also reporting that just like the Samsung Epic 4G was a WiMAX variant of the Galaxy S, the tablet may also be getting the 4G treatment. That would be a pretty big incentive for the Sprint version if it turns out to be true, but we’ll just have to wait and see about that.

Galaxy Tab Will Cost €699 [Update: Pricing Confirmed, Pre-Order Starts for Oct. 11 Release]

This image has no alt text

galaxy-tab4

[UPDATE]: While Samsung has issued comment saying prices floating around as of now are just speculation, the suggested retail pricing in Sweden suggests otherwise, where the Galaxy Tab is valued at SEK 9,000 or $1,240 including value added tax of 20 percent. Further corroborating the pricing is a pre-order now available through Expansys listing the device at £679.99 and dropping on October 11th.

Along with today’s announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Tab came no mention of specific pricing. We are assuming that sort of thing will mostly be left to subsidies and the various carriers stocking the Tab, but there is a bit of a rumor flying around about the supposed off-contract price of the model in Europe. The pricing is said to be €699 for the 16GB model and €799 for the 32GB version. In terms of hard earned American dollars that is about $900 or $1000 depending on the amount of storage you go with.

As said before, if this pricing holds true carrier subsidies will be sure to cut a good chunk of that price tag out, but it will also means anyone who wishes to use the tablet as a WiFi only device with no cellular connectivity is going to have to drop a pretty penny.  The Galaxy Tab has a lot of good things going for it, but if this rumor turns out to be true it could be a deal breaker for some. What say you? Would you pony up that kind of cash for Samsung’s Android tablet?

Ruby on Rails Steams Ahead With 3.0 Release

It’s been two years in the making, but Ruby on Rails 3.0 is finally here. You can grab the third generation of the popular web framework from the official website, or update via the command line with: gem install rails --version 3.0.0

Rails 3 is a major overhaul for the framework and merges the Rails and Merb frameworks to create a single lightweight code base for web applications written in Ruby.

The goal for this release was to make Ruby on Rails faster and more modular. Developers can now mix and match libraries, swapping out their favorites for Rails’ default choices.

If you’d like to know what’s new, what’s changed and why you might want to upgrade to Rails 3.0, head over to the Ruby on Rails screencast page, which has videos covering the biggest changes in the new release, as well as a number of smaller, but very useful new features.

FS Torch

We’ve been hearing for quite some time that release dates for the BlackBerry Torch 9800 on Canadian carriers was set for September. The big three, Bell, TELUS and Rogers have all confirmed an inevitable launch but no dates were set by any. Rumors suggest TELUS will launch on Sept 16th but, we now have the above information which suggests a Rogers release one day earlier on the 15th. We’re assuming the $999.99 price point is just a Future Shop place holder so, nothing can be said about official pricing from this information. We’ll be sure to keep you all updated though as we find out more information. So, who’s grabbing a Torch on launch day in Canada?
