NFL 2011 Releases Bundle of New Apps Just in Time for Kickoff

The National Football League has released an official app for Android tablets today, just hours prior to the season kicks off.  Called NFL ’11, the app is a free of charge download and provides on-demand NFL network news and information, teams new, game details, and a lot more.  We get the sense that this 1 was rushed out the door as the Android Market description advises that “a lot more functions in the coming days and weeks”.  Whatever, better than showing up three weeks into the season!  We’ve already got it downloaded and sitting inside arm’s reach.  We’ll need it as we watch the New Orleans Saints take on the Green Bay Packers in the season opener.

Unlike NFL Mobile, this app works for any carrier and does not need any sort of paid services. Hit the break for a fast breakdown of the additional Android apps available for NFL fans, and their respective download links.

FEMA Releases Android App Just in Time for Hurricane Irene

FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has released an Android app just in time for hurricane Irene to function its way up the East Coast. The app has a bunch of useful details on disaster safety tips, preparing emergency meeting locations, making a supplies kit, and finding the newest news on upcoming disasters. This consists of every little thing from hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and extreme heat scenarios. I discovered the map section to be quite useless and buggy (sometimes it wouldn’t even load), but there is a ton of other details in the app that could be quite helpful. To check it out, you can grab the app here from our handy apps database. Screenshots from the app can be seen following the break.

Samsung releases 2nd teaser video for large announcement on September 1st (Video)

Another teaser video from Samsung avows “something massive is coming” at the commence of the IFA trade show in Berlin on September 1st. These videos are creating far more questions rather than answers for what we can expect.

Basically put, the 1st of the two clips gives us images of some young and gorgeous people smiling with wind-blown hair on the peaceful oceanside. The second shows a lot more young and beautiful folks, this time with a dose of hip and a splash of cool, as they smile and walk around town carrying and employing glowing handsets and tablet devices.

Some are buzzing that one of the glowing mystery devices could be Samsung’s rumored Android Honeycomb Galaxy Tab which capabilities a 7-inch Super AMOLED screen (1024𴨰 resolution), three-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front facing cam for video chat. Yet another theory is that it may well be a phone since “glowing handsets” appear in the videos.

What do you believe the Massive announcement is? Leave us a comment and check out both videos right after the break.

Samsung releases Vibrant source code for Android 2.2

Samsung seems to be in a giving mode today; not only did they provide developers with the Froyo source code for the Epic 4G, they’ve also provided it for the Samsung Vibrant as well.

Remember, this is not an update that you can flash immediately to your Vibrant to have Froyo. This is more for developers looking to enhance their device or use their own vanilla Android versions.

Although most average users won’t be working with these files, it’s nice to know that Samsung is staying committed to Android and beginning to provide more updates for users. Plus, maybe some pretty sweet custom ROMs will come out of these source codes!

Samsung Releases Hostage Finally! Vibrant Source Code Now Available

I’m sure most of you remember our initial post on this subject. Finally Vibrant owners have an “official” source to build from. While Im sure this is too little too late, as far as saving Samsung’s reputation, it’s a step in the right direction.

Alright, alright stop the excitement for a second, to download the source codes you’ll need to visit Samsung’s Open-Source Site and do a search for “Sgh-T959″. Now that that’s over with, let the celebrating commence, and please allow me to join you in celebration: *fist pump* “YES!”

All About Symbian releases first part of their Nokia E7 review

All About Symbian releases first part of their Nokia E7 reviewI really enjoyed playing with the Nokia E7 at Nokia World last Fall and was thinking I might pick one up. My orange Nokia N8 is performing quite well at the moment and I cannot justify the $800+ likely unlocked price of the E7 so unless Nokia sends out an eval unit for a bit I won’t be writing a review here on Nokia Experts. However, my buddies over at All About Symbian will indeed be providing full coverage of the device and now that the E7 is shipping you can check out Rafe’s first part that covers an overview of the hardware and some first impressions.

In the past, the Eseries devices have all been priced quite low compared to Nseries smartphones, but with the E7 that looks to have flip-flopped. Rafe’s first part is very detailed and after reading it I started trying to figure out what I could sell to pick one up for myself :)

I have to try the keyboard though to see if that is enough for me to give up the better camera, smaller form factor, and expandable memory of the lovely N8. As great as the E7 looks, I am not sold that a physical QWERTY keyboard justifies getting rid of my N8.

How many readers are planning to pick up an E7 when they become available?

@Gridlock32404 releases guide to compiling Android AOSP / CyanogenMOD CM7

Sometimes you just meet peoople and hit it off or just get a good feeling about them. Gridlock32404 is one of those guys I talk to frequently on GChat and is responsible for compiling the current round of CM7 source code into usable releases for around 10 of the latest and greatest super phones.

He is currently creating his own build environment and hopes to be soon releasing his very own creations based solely on the AOSP source code.

Gridlock32404 AOSP Guide

Gridlock32404 AOSP Guide

If compiling AOSP and CyanogenMOD CM7 wasn’t enough of a service for the community, he has now written and released a complete guide on how to build a development environment and compile from the AOSP and the CyanogenMOD CM7 source.  It’s designed to help anyone with a reasonable head on their shoulders build their very own ROMs.

His Intro:

So you got yourself a nice copy of Ubuntu 9.10/10.04/10.10 and you have every intention of building a rom for yourself or maybe you just wanna learn the inside workings of android, well there are a few extra steps for getting it set up in 9.10/10.04. Gonna try to make this an easy transition since most of you are coming from a windows based machine. Make sure that you have at least a 30 gb partition set up to follow along with this guide, more is better but I know some don’t have the hard drive space to spare.

He’s an awesome guy and deserves a lot of thanks from the community so be sure to go and check out his work and remember to donate if you use his work, just like any other developer who’s work you use.

So what are you waiting for, head over to his XDA thread and start compiling.

Verizon releases info about an additional 49 markets to get 4G LTE in the first half of 2011

Verizon first announced their 4G LTE service back in December with 38 initial markets, including cities like Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and New York. Now it seems that information has emerged about an additional 49 markets slated for 4G coverage before the first half of 2011.

Verizon made a huge splash at CES this year with the announcement of four LTE ready Android smartphones, and two LTE ready Android tablets. However, one thing we have yet to learn is how much they will charge for 4G mobile data. Big Red currently charges $50 for 5 GB and $80 for 10 GB for their 4G USB modems, but it’s unclear if there will be an unlimited option like there is with the current 3G service.

Continue after the break to see the list of upcoming Verizon 4G LTE markets.

Swype Releases Official Statement on Distribution

We’ve all done it, in one way or another. Downloaded a Swype.apk file to give Swype’s amazing keyboard a try. Found a Swype.apk and sent it to our friends. But the fact is that some aspects of distribution are illegal according to Swype Inc.’s copyrights. Swype has released an official statement, directed mainly at users on XDA, about when it’s okay or not okay to distribute Swype on devices. The official statement is below.

[[Visit blog to check out this spoiler]]

Basically what it says is that adding Swype to a ROM built for a device that ships with Swype is fine, as long as it’s the same version number and all the licenses are intact and included. Furthermore, modding Swype.apks with Metamorph to change the UI of it is totally permitted, but of course the distribution falls back to the first rule. I think Swype is being fairly reasonable about this. Most companies would have someone’s profile on XDA shut down for distributing their software, but not Swype. I’d say that’s commendable. Any questions?

CyanogenMod 6.1.0 Stable Releases Falling From The Heavens

If you own a rooted Android device, chances are CyanogenMod is a familiar, perhaps even a common, almost “household” name.  I’ve personally rooted phones for the sole purpose of installing CM6.  A modders dream & a carriers nightmare.  The team is constantly finding ways to improve & develop things that some could argue should have been included in the official stock rom.  Needless to say, we here at Android Guys absolutely love #TeamDouche & the whole CyanogenMod Crew.

While you are watching the SNF game between the Steelers & Ravens, the crew is hard at work putting out updates.  Version 6.1.0 is out for a handful of devices & more continue to fall from the cloud.  Devices from the original Moto Droid to the HTC EVO 4G have been updated.  So far 6  have been updated & there may be more to come.  You can check the #TeamDouche mirrors to see if your device received the update.  Don’t forget to visit the Official Changelog for more information.
