Dan Morril Says No Minimum Requirements for Honeycomb

This image has no alt text

Remember when that rumor was brought up the first time? You know, the one where the newer versions of Android would require a specific set of specs? Remember when it was debunked? Remember when that rumor came back up again? Remember when that one was debunked too? Yep, Dan Morrill has put yet another ax to these claims: Honeycomb does not require a dual core processor. (Note that he doesn’t say anything about the screen resolution.) Though he may be telling the truth, all of the tablets that are supposed to be shipping with Honeycomb will have Tegra 2 dual-core processors and have screen sizes and resolutions of 10-inches and 1280×720 or higher. Coincidence? Eh. Even if it isn’t true, that would mean these tablet makers have no desire to stink up the joint, and I’m just glad to see a new wave of tablets with such high specs. Twitter for the confirmation. [via AG]

Morril: Once again, no minimum CPU requirements for Honeycomb

Well, this sounds oddly familiar. There’s been some rumors that Honeycomb will require a dual-core processor to run, but, according to Dan Morril – a member of the Google team – that’s simply not true. In a tweet, he says:

#dejavu Random note: there’s no hard minimum processor requirement for Honeycomb. Trust me, if there were I’d know.

So there you have it, folks. Just like last time, it’s all rumor.

Does Gingerbread Have Minimum Hardware Requirements After All?

It was rumored as far back as June that Android 2.3/Gingerbread would require specific hardware.  If you recall, Eldar Murtazin was the one who first made reference to the idea that this release would need certain features in order to make the cut.  Features that included a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, and more.  Dan Morill, an Android guy on the inside followed a few days later, pouring cold water on the rumors.  Being that he’s someone who knows a few things about Android, we assumed it to be put to bed.  Flash forward to today when the rumor resurfaces.

The word out of LG today is that their new Optimus line of handsets will not support Gingerbread.  According to their Facebook page, the brand new series of phones does not meet the minimum hardware requirements (1GHz process0r) needed.  As some of you know, the Optimus line uses a 600MHz chipset.

Now, it is possible that the Facebook arm of LG might not be completely in the know and are only passing along six-month-old rumors.  However, it’s also possible that they do know what they are talking about and Android fragmentation could take a turn for the worse.  Or would that actually be for the better?

UPDATE: Eldar tweeted yesterday that these were not so much requirements, but recommendations. (Thanks, Kyle!)

Either way, we’re waiting to hear more from LG, and Google as to the rumors here.  In the meanwhile, we’ve downgraded the Optimus Line from Very Likely Getting Android 2.3 to May Not Get Android 2.3 on our Gingerbread Tracker.
