AT&T Rolling Out Android two.3.four for Atrix 4G

If you own a Motorola Atrix 4G, and have been itching for some Gingerbread love, then wait no a lot more, as the Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update is available now! Of course, there’s much more than just 2.three.four in this update. The update includes

  • Faster and smoother performance
  • New MotoBlur (related to the Droid3′s)
  • Side-loading of applications (third-party apps)

These updates (specially the new MotoBlur) will hopefully make your phone really feel like new once more. Most Atrix users also have the companion accessory, the LapDock. Don’t be concerned, Motorola didn’t forget about that either. The Android 2.three.4 upgrade also delivers quicker browsing, new applications for the gallery and music, and full 1080p output. On a private note, Motorola providing the new “Blur” is a major upgrade (coming from a Droid three user).

So, if you have not received the update, you can try to receive it manually by checking for software program updates under About Telephone in your Atrix 4G’s settings. If it does not seem proper away, just be patient, as it typically takes some time for the rollout to reach each device. If you have received the update, what are your thoughts? Enjoying the new Blur? Sound off in the comments below!

Samsung Galaxy Tab Gingerbread Update Begins Rolling Out to Sprint Users

This image has no alt text

The original Samsung Galaxy Tab might not have the hardware to stack up against the newly released Galaxy Tab 10.1, but thanks to an update rolling out today at least one carrier-branded version of the 7-inch slate will get a fresher build of Android that might restore some of its appeal. It isn’t the tablet-specific Honeycomb, but the Android 2.3 update should breath some new life into Samsung’s first Android tablet.

Maintenance release EF17 is now going out to Sprint users, with the update expected to reach all owners of their Galaxy Tab within four days. Anyone out there receive their piece of Gingerbread yet?

Android 2.3.2 Update Rolling out to Nexus S

style="text-align: center;">

style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-46591" title="NexusS-logo" src="http://androidspin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/NexusS-logo.png" alt="" width="206" height="54" />

At least Google is good to keep their phones updated. If I was an average consumer I would gladly pay a higher price for constant updates. As chance would have it though, Google has started to push an update out to the newly released href="http://androidspin.com/tag/Google-Nexus-S/" target="_blank">Google Nexus S, moving its OS version to 2.3.2. The latest update is just a bug fix OTA that is set to resolve the SMS issue of sending texts to the wrong people. I’d say it’s a rather important thing to fix, sending a revealing message to your wife that ends up in your boss’s phone by accident could pose a problem. In fact, I can think of a lot of situations where this particular issue could pose a problem.

If you are one of the few owners of a Nexus S, be on the lookout for your OTA which should be hitting soon.

Thank you, tipster, for the heads up on this one.

Breaking: Sprint Epic 4G OTA rolling out now

Sprint rolling out Froyo (2.2) OTA

We all thought this day would never come, or at least I did.  According to Brief Mobile – Sprint has begun rolling out Froyo to Epic 4G owners.  This seems to be Sprint’s new style.  Just as they did with the Evo 4G, the release of Froyo for a Galaxy S phone they beat the rest of the competition to the punch.

As we know, this is the first official update of a Galaxy S phone in the United States.  Considering that this is also the final major Galaxy S phone launched in the US (Continuum excluded) this is a big step for Sprint.  This seems to be Sprint’s new style.  Just as they did with the Evo 4G, the release of Froyo for a Galaxy S phone they beat the rest of the competition to the punch.  They seem to be determined to maintain their place in the Android world, offering the first updates as soon as they can.  No matter what the reasons, it is nice to see the update finally making it’s way to consumers.  Samsung, please get everyone else caught up now as well!

I am adding the manual update process again, via Brief Mobile

We’ve just reported that Android 2.2 has been over-the-air updated to the Sprint Epic 4G. Until now, users not receiving the update yet have been out of luck. Below, we’ve uploaded an update.zip to allow you to install Android 2.2.1 Froyo on your Epic 4G. Go ahead and push the file to your internal SD card. From there you can flash the file in recovery mode.

Instructions: Update Android 2.2 Froyo for Epic 4G

Intended for those going from stock Android 2.1 to the latest firmware.

  1. Download the required update.zip file
  2. RENAME the file to “update.zip” (If you get an error while flashing, your file might accidentally be named “update.zip.zip” due to Windows’ file renaming system. Simply rename it to “update” to make it update.zip and flash)
  3. Move the file to your storage on the Epic 4G (Mount USB storage and drag the update.zip into root-highest-up folder)
  4. Boot your device into “recovery mode” (if you don’t know how: click here)
  5. Apply the sdcard update.zip from Recovery Mode
  6. Congratulations! You now have Android 2.2.1 Froyo (DK28) on your Samsung Epic 4G from Sprint!

Alternate Instructions: Update Android 2.2 Froyo for Epic 4G

Intended for those going from any other version of Android to the latest firmware.

  1. Download the required .tar file
  2. Download Odin
  3. Open up Odin and put your phone into “download mode”
    • Turn off your phone, wait until the lights turn off
    • Hold “1″ on the keyboard while powering up
  4. Plug your device in
  5. Place the .tar file in the PDA slot
  6. Start flashing

Please let us know if this has worked for you, or if you have received the OTA.

Happy Flashing!

Android Market Update Rolling Out for Froyo – Adds Similar Related Tab

marketupdate_froyo

An update to the Android Market is making its way out to devices running Android 2.2. The update looks to be adding a 3rd tab to the app details screen called “Similar” or “Related” depending on the device you have. In the example above, the Droid X screen on the left shows a “Similar” tab, while the Evo 4G shows “Related”. Either way, they offer the same functionality from what we can tell.

No real announcement has been made for the roll out, but you should expect to see it soon on Android 2.2 devices. No doubt this is one of those incremental updates to move into Gingerbread with ease.

Unbranded Dell Streak Froyo Update Rolling Out, Carrier Specific Rolling Out Late December

While many of you have chosen to root your Dell Streak and have already tasted Froyo (Android 2.2), it looks like Dell is rolling out the Android 2.2 update to their unbranded Streaks in the United Kingdom while they peg late December for their carrier specific devices.

Below is the announcement for the Android 2.2 update and we should expect the “late December” to carry over into the early January time frame as well, so don’t get too upset when your Dell Streak doesn’t receive the update by New Year’s Eve.

The Streak Froyo Update will be completed in two phases for existing Streak customers.

Phase 1 : Beginning today, Monday, November 15, 2010, an OTA update will be available to customers who purchased their Streaks as unlocked units. These units will be upgraded first because they do not have to go through the carrier approval process. Unlocked units are generally popular outside the United States and can be identified by the fact they are able to be used with a SIM card from any carrier network. The rollout of the upgrade will be gradual with different regions and versions of Donut and Éclair updated over the weeks following November 15, 2010. When a user’s device is ready for an update, the user will be notified by an update icon in the notification bar after a power up. A user can also manually check for an update by going to Settings – About Device and selecting System Updates. Devices ready for update will then be taken through the update process.

Phase 2: Starting later in December, users on devices locked to a specific carrier (i.e. you can only use your carrier’s SIM in the device) will start seeing updates as we work with our carrier partners for technical approval.

Be sure and hit up Dell for how to backup your device and to keep up with the update status.

Android 2.1 Rolling Out to Xperia X10 and X10 Mini/Pro in Select Regions Sunday

Finally, Sony Ericsson Xperia users will start to receive Android 2.1 as the roll out of the OTA update is slated to begin Sunday to the Nordic region followed by Europe receiving the update on Monday, which will then lead up to staggered updates throughout November making sure every Xperia user is taken care of.

Of course, just because the update is rolling out on a certain day doesn’t mean that you’ll receive the update that day. So don’t worry, your device will not go overlooked.

Features coming with the Android 2.1 update include:

Xperia X10:

• HD video recording with continuous auto-focus for high quality videos
• Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1
• New back up and restore application, with extended content back up
• 5 homescreens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders
• Social phonebook which automatically syncs contact pictures from Facebook and shows when your friends are online

Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro:

• Improved Bluetooth functionality with support for sending and receiving pictures, contacts and more
• New backup and restore application with extended content back up
• Automatic synchronization of your contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book
• Improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in your messages
• Upgrade of the Android platform to Android platform 2.1

The rolling out of Android 2.1 on Sunday barely makes their end of October deadline. Android 2.3 Gingerbread talks are underway as the delicious treat recently was mounted in the front yard at Googleplex, hopefully your contract is up soon if you’re looking at getting the next firmware upgrade.

Feel free to let us know where you’re located and when you receive the OTA update in our comments below.

Nokia N900 PR1.3 rolling out now

Nokia N900 PR1.3 rolling out nowI just read over on The Handheld Blog that PR1.3 for the Nokia N900 is rolling out across different regions right now. This will bring the firmware up to v20.2010.36-2 and is available over the air. I don’t have my N900 with me at the moment so I cannot confirm if it is available in the US yet, but will try when I get home tonight.

I understand the new firmware has some bug fixes, stability improvements, and support for Nokia’s Ovi Suite. It is also supposed to aid developers in dual booting their devices into MeeGo. It is doubtful that any MeeGo hardware will be coming out this year so this should give enterprising users the capability to try out MeeGo for themselves on the N900 and it is something I will be looking into on my N900 soon.

After I get my Nokia N900 updated I will look around and see if I can find any other specific updates and if an official changelog is posted I will include that as well.

R2-D2 DROID 2 Dummy Units Begin Rolling Out

While the special edition R2-D2 DROID 2 units aren’t going to be rolling out until the end of the month, it looks like some of the dummy units have already begun to slip into stores. Judging by these shots, it looks like there’s going to be some custom packaging to go along with it.

I could sit here and bore you with speculation, but it would probably be better if you saw the shots for yourself. Remember, this new little beep-beep-booping bundle of Motorola joy will only be coming to select stores when it is released September 30th. Be sure to let us know what you think in the comments.

T-Mobile UK Begins Rolling Out Android 2.2 to the HTC Desire

Good news T-Mobile UK Desire users! Froyo is now beginning to hit your device as we have received several reports that the update is coming full force bringing your share of Android 2.2. Don’t worry if the update hasn’t hit your device yet as it could possibly take a couple of days until your device prompts you for the update, just know that it is coming.

You can manually check for the update by following the normal Menu>Settings>About Phone>System software updates>Check now route if you don’t want to wait for it to hit, but that OTA prompt is always comforting to see every now and then. We’ve also heard one report where after the update was installed, the user noticed that the Account Management application was in Dutch, anyone else see this?

Let us know in the comments below what you guys think of the Android 2.2 update. Enjoy!

Thanks Ben!

This image has no alt text

Well call my inbox stuffed and ready to vomit all of these reports. It seems that – after a quick scare by ill-informed Sprint customer service reps – the upgrade to Android 2.2 for the HTC EVO 4G hasn’t been delayed due to issues. In fact, it’s being pushed out to several excited EVO 4G users right now – just a day ahead of its official rollout date (you guys in the forums make my day!) The firmware version for the OTA is 3.26.651.6 and clocks in at 84.34MB (be sure to turn on WiFi before downloading if you can).

Google “Gone.” stickers start rolling in

Well, folks, my stickers that I ordered from Google have come in. That’s my HTC Hero in the picture above, and it’s showing off some Google love. Some of you may remember that Google started handing out stickers to those who have gone Google. I count myself in this fortunate group of people, and will hereby be flying my Google flag proudly.

It should be noted that while Google is no longer giving away these limited edition (they simply say “gone.” instead of “Gone Google”) stickers, the Gone Google store does have some merchandise available.

Nokia N900 1.2 update rolling out soon, is it enough?

Nokia N900 1.2 update rolling out soon, is it enough?Great, just as I am getting ready to leave town for over a week on a cruise with my wonderful wife of 17 years Nokia goes and decides to release the N900 version 1.2 firmware update. The update is rolling out in the UK today and starts globally tomorrow. Unfortunately, I will not be able to provide you all with an in-depth walk through the update until after I return next week. In the meantime, let’s take a look at what you can expect.

New games will be released, including Jurassic 3D, Rollercoaster, Angry Birds level pack, and more. These games will show up in the Ovi Store after Thursday, 27 May.

You will also see some improvements in the communication systems. You will be able to accept or decline meeting invitations. Facebook IM chat will be included, alogn with some kind of video calling capability (not sure what client is being used here) via Skype as Jason tested out and confirmed. Portrait web browsing is included. There is also an Ovi Maps update and I sure hope it gives us a MUCH improved experience because it is quite lame at the moment.

Thankfully, you will also find the ability to customize the first level of the menu system icons.

Several of these updates are things we have been able to do with kludgy fixes so it is nice to see a single update incorporate these capabilities.

Here is my list of things I want to see improved in the N900 and I have no idea if this update will address any of them as details still are not fully revealed:

  1. Improved email client that more closely matches other smartphones
  2. Ability to send text messages in portrait mode with the on-screen keyboard
  3. Ability to organize application icons/shortcuts into folders

Are you happy to see this update? What is the biggest feature you were looking forward to? What else would you like to see before Nokia abandons Maemo and switches to Meego?

MOTO Rolling Out 2.1 To France, Germany, Italy, UK and Beyond

This image has no alt text

A few hours ago we told you about 2.1 be provided OTA for Milestone owners and the comments were clamoring “with who/what/when/where?” and “are you sure about 9 home screens”? Now we’ve got a more definite timeline thanks to a Motorola Europe Facebook post:

moto-europe-21

So there you have it:

  • Who – Moto (Milestone) owners
  • What – Android 2.1
  • When – Starting today through mid-April
  • Where – France today, then Germany/Italy/UK/Beyond
  • Why – there are definitely such things as stupid questions

And you heard it directly from them… live wallpapers, 9 homescreens, and additional exchange security. We’re not writing it in stone just yet as recent history has been cruel, but we’re watching this one closely.
