Live From the BBQ: Modders’ Round Table

First up in the Android BBQ sessions is the modders’ round table talk moderated by AndroidSPIN’s own Simon Walker. Can’t be here? Follow us on the live blog!

12:02PM I haven’t even been in Austin for an hour and I’m already diving into things, the discussion has been underway for about 10 minutes already.

12:04PM A guy from the audience thanks all the devs for their hard work.

12:05PM A question about whether tablets will see any dev work; the short answer is the lack of quality hardware doesn’t make it worth it right now.

12:07PM It’s a music medley from all the people that haven’t put their phones on silent.

12:12PM  ”Will we see an updated version of Stericson’s lockscreen?”  The answer, we can hope, but time is not readily available.

12:15PM The guys mention that a lot of new features often start with a random suggestion.

12:20PM Another question, does anyone work with any other mobile OS? That generated a lot of laughter.

12:27PM CM6 is on phones in 91 countries and  334 carriers.

12:36PM Question: if the number of people that want to root their devices is tiny in the grand scheme of things, why are carriers so against it? Answer: profit and liability.

12:40PM “We’re pretty sure you earn street cred by suing Google.”

12:43PM Each member of the table is talking about their personal challenges working with Android. Inexperience in certain areas seems to be a common theme?

12:47PM “How do you pace yourselves?” We don’t sleep. But seriously, we make time for something we love.

12:51PM And we’re done!

IFA Hands-On Round Up With Toshiba and Huawei Tablets Plus More

This image has no alt text

While Phandroid wasn’t able to make an appearance at IFA and personally shmooze with device manufacturer’s as we fondled their goods, plenty of pals from around the Android community made their way to Berlin for the event and did a bang-up job of covering the many releases. Tablets seemed to be the hot topic at the event, specifically those running Android. Two slabs announced were the Toshiba Folio 100 and the Huawei Ideos S7, both of which seem to be getting shaky verdicts on the overall presentation of Android.

First up, the device with arguably less potential is the Huawei S7. SlashGear was on hand to take a spin with the thing, and took away an impression that the device may have been a stand-out tablet had it been released earlier in the year, but in the face of future tablets it probably doesn’t stack up.

And one of the tablets that will create a bit of a harder time for the S7 would be the Toshiba Folio 100, which boasts the sort of specs that could make you drool, though initial feedback has seen a version of Android not quite optimized or the 10.1-inch widescreen display. There is hope that may change as release draws near however. The tablet runs on the bigger side and lacks the portability of something like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. You can check out Android Central’s full preview for more info on that.

toshiba-folio-100 - 12

And finally we will bring it back to Huawei for impressions of their entry-level Ideos handset also announced yesterday. This one provides a cheap and dirty pathway to Android 2.2 with surprsingly decent internals including a 2.8-inch QVGA display. 3.2MP camera, and the ability to act as a mobile hotspot. It should go for right around $150 off contract when it launches to numerous markets around the globe.

Bonus: Hands-on action with the recently announced line of ARCHOS Android tablets.

CrackBerry Idol update: Round 1 Kicks Off Today – 24 BlackBerry app reviews coming your way over the next two weeks!

CrackBerry Idol App Review Round
Dieter, Georga and Craig.. our own Randy, Paula and Simon of sorts!

If you tuned into the CrackBerry Idol audition videos we ran on the blogs here (check out parts I, II, III, IV and V) you already know the competition is heating up big time. We have a lot of talented individuals entered into the competition, each coming at the challenge with a unique perspective and a lot of passion. It’s stil anybody’s game.

Now that you have all seen the audition videos and know the competitors, it’s time to move onto Round 1 of CrackBerry Idol – the BlackBerry App review.  Each contestant has prepared a fullout review of their app or game of choice, complete with video, screen caps/photos and write up. We have 24 reviews (Finza had to drop out of the competition – so not 25) in the queue and we’ll be posting 2 each day (taking Sundays off) until we’ve run them all on the blogs. We did a random draw for the order of post appearance (kind of crazy, but first up for the app review was also the first app for the audition posting order). Our CrackBerry Idol judges will give their feedback on each review in the first comment to each post, and the community can follow up with their thoughts.

Once all of the BlackBerry App Reviews have been run on the blogs, we’ll do a recap post accompanied with the community voting, so you can cast your vote for who you’d like to see advance into the next round. 10 contestants will move onto Round 2. Keep it locked to CrackBerry for more Idol fun. This is gonna rock!

Kennedy submits opponent in first round
If Tim Kennedy was rusty, the fight didn’t last long enough to show it. The mixed-martial arts fighter needed only 3 minutes and 35 seconds to submit Trevor Prangley with a standing, rear-naked choke in the first round Wednesday in Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre.

Broadband Grants from RUS: Round 1

Dept. of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service has published a report detailing how much money was given out in Round 1 of the Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP), along with the identity of recipients, the types of projects funded and their locations.

Three types of projects received BIP awards:

  1. Thirteen last-mile remote projects ($161 million) to provide broadband service to households and other end users located at least 50 miles from the nearest nonrural area. These represent 19 percent of the awards and 15 percent of the total dollars awarded.
  2. Forty-nine last-mile non-remote projects ($739 million) to provide broadband service to households and other end users in rural areas located less than 50 miles from the nearest nonrural area. These represent 72 percent of the awards and 69 percent of the total dollars awarded.
  3. Six middle-mile projects ($167 million) to provide necessary “backbone” services such as interoffice transport, backhaul, Internet connectivity, or special access to rural areas. These represent 9 percent of the awards and 16 percent of the total dollars awarded.

The Recovery Act appropriated $7.2 billion and directed the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS) and The NTIA’s Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) to expand broadband access to unserved and underserved communities across the U.S., increase jobs, spur investments in technology and infrastructure, and provide long-term economic benefits.
The Recovery Act appropriated $2.5 billion for the USDA’s Rural Utilities Service to extend loans, grants, and loan and grants to projects that will bring broadband service to rural areas.

RUS awarded $1.068 billion to 68 recipients in 31 States and 1 U.S. Territory. Here’s their pdf report.

    Here are some project summaries:

  • Alaska:
The four Alaska projects awarded in Round One will benefit primarily subsistence-level Alaska Native communities, most of which are scattered over tens of thousands of miles without roads.
  • Colorado:
The Peetz Co-operative Telephone Company, a small business, will provide broadband infrastructure to the Town of Peetz, Colorado, and the surrounding community to a population of working families who travel 20 plus miles
    to work daily.
  • Iowa:
Eastlight, LLC, a small business, will implement a wireless project to bring broadband to 144,000 rural residents in 111 communities in Iowa. These communities are separated by 5 to 10 miles of rolling farm land populated by farms whose houses are spaced typically 0.5 to 1 mile apart. More than 32,000 businesses will be served.
  • Michigan:
Chatham Telephone, a subsidiary of TDS Telecom, the eighth largest wireline telephone company in the Nation, estimates that its project in Alger County, Michigan, will create or save 170 jobs in the economically hard-hit State. The project will bring DSL to 878 households, 38 businesses, and 2 anchor institutions.
  • Minnesota:
The city of Windom, Minn., a member of the Southwest Minnesota Broadband Group (SWMBG), will provide Fiber-To-The-Premises (FTTP) infrastructure to eight rural communities in southwestern Minnesota. The network will consist of a 125-mile fiber ring that will connect the communities.
  • New Mexico:
San Ildefonso Pueblo will deploy a regional open network through the implementation of the TewaCom Broadband Initiative (TBI), Phase 1-Upper Rio Grande Valley service to offer broadband services to 2,405 households, 35 businesses, and 23 anchor institutions.
  • Ohio:
Consolidated Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CEC) will build and deploy middle-mile broadband transmission for Internet service, wireless, and other interconnect service providers to provide connectivity to the underserved areas of Delaware, Morrow, Knox, and Licking Counties in Ohio.
  • Oregon:
The city of Sandy, Ore., will provide broadband service to the underserved rural area around it by improving and expanding the wireless Internet service provided by SandyNet, its own municipal Internet service provider. The project will add new antenna towers, upgrade equipment capacity, and provide fiber backhaul. The service will be affordable, high-speed (up to 8 megabits per second) Internet access.
  • Texas:
PRIDE Network will construct an FTTP telecommunications infrastructure that will make affordable advanced broadband service available to 53,613 residents and 2,201 businesses in 12 rural communities in the Texas South Plains region, one of the highest poverty areas in the country. This open-access telecommunications infrastructure, with a WiMAX service-extension overlay, will also directly enable cost-effective applications of broadband services to first responder interoperability, E911 Services, distance learning, telemedicine, and connectivity to underserved communities.

The Commerce Department’s NTIA has posted online a searchable database containing summaries of applications received. However, the other agency, the USDA’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS), has not yet posted Round 2 applications into their publicly facing database.

StimulatingBroadband.com has detailed reporting of the federal broadband stimulus program. Their Google Map shows locations of each grant or loan awarded to date.

NTIA has a total of $4.7 billion to deploy broadband infrastructure, expand public computer center capacity, and encourage sustainable adoption of broadband service. RUS will invest $2.5 billion to facilitate broadband deployment in rural communities. The agencies accepted applications from February 16, 2010, to March 15, 2010, and will announce all awards by September 30, 2010.

LTE Vs WiMAX: The Fractal Round

International Data Corporation reports that more than a dozen new LTE networks are poised to go live this year, and spending on LTE will exceed WiMAX equipment spending by the end of 2011. Worldwide LTE infrastructure revenues will fall just below $8 billion by 2014.

“The world is coalescing around the LTE standard as a result of its promise to increase speed and capacity to address the exploding growth in mobile data traffic,” said Godfrey Chua, research manager, Wireless and Mobile Infrastructure.

Additional findings from IDC’s study includes:

  • LTE provides capacity support/offload for 3G networks, making it a complementary technology in the near term.
  • The LTE equipment race is experiencing a “land grab” between incumbent 3G market leader Ericsson and the fast rising Huawei, while Nokia Siemens and Alcatel Lucent work hard to remain relevant.
  • In 2010, all LTE vendors, including the likes of Motorola, NEC, and Fujitsu, are increasing their go-to-market efforts, further amplifying competitive pressures.

Like 802.11n, WiMax contains support for MIMO antennas in the 2.6 Mhz band, but size restraints in the 700 MHz band could be tricky for mobile devices.

Fractal antennas (wikipedia) designed for 700 MHz could be one solution. Fractal antennas, which specializes on 900MHz, cellular, and Wifi antennas, has been developing the Metacloak, a slipover fractal antenna parasitically excited by an internal monopole.

Golf Bets Offers No Mulligans or Gimmies Just Accuracy And Fun For Your Round

When I first heard about Golf Bets iPhone app by Golf Bets app.com, I was really excited since some of the guys I golf with can be, lets say, a little loose with the score keeping and wager management. So I was looking forward to having this as my trusty aid that would lead me to my windfall next round.

Once I opened the Golf Bets app I was immediately thinking this is going to be a pain. I’ll have to enter all of this course and slope information. Who has time for that? I looked at what Golf Bets had to offer and weighed it against the effort to get there. What the heck I’ll give it a try.

Once opening Golf Bets, a menu appears with a number of choices: Enter Score, View Card Status. Setup Golf Courses, Setup Players, Setup Round and Information.

I began with the Setup Golf Courses tab, and it turned out to be really easy and took about 5 minutes max. All you really need to do this is have a scorecard handy. (…)
