New Privacy Icons Aim to Save You From Yourself

A few of the proposed privacy icons

Mozilla has taken the lead among browser vendors to make a site’s privacy settings more explicitly visible. It’s doing so by proposing visual cues in the browser that indicate what level of privacy you’re currently browsing at, and what pieces of your personal data the site you’re currently visiting is sharing with the rest of the web.

Earlier this year, Mozilla’s head user experience designer Aza Raskin proposed creating a set of icons to denote the privacy policy of a website. Now, after getting feedback from a wide range of interested groups — from the Electronic Frontier Foundation to the Federal Trade Commission — Raskin has drawn up a new and improved icon set.

The idea behind Raskin’s proposal is that the browser is the most logical place to display identity and privacy information to the user as they click around on the social web. The end goal is to produce a set for warnings similar to the way that Firefox (and other browsers) currently handle phishing attack warnings, using visual icons and simple language to explain what you’re getting into when you load a page with a different level of privacy or security.

For the active social web user, keeping track of which bits of your data are public and which are private on different sites is a chore. Some websites share your photos, status updates, your list of friends, who you’re following and other data default. Some share nothing. The rest are somewhere in the middle.

Part of the problem is the privacy policies themselves. They are complex, mind-numbingly long legal documents. We routinely ignore them, breezing past them by clicking “I agree.” Once clicked, your rights are compromised, and you may not be able to fully restore them.

A set of icons in the browser, to quickly and easily allow users to know what will happen to their data, means that users don’t need a law degree to know what’s happening to their images, status updates and other data.

The big difference between privacy icons and the phishing warnings your browser already offers, is that these icons are targeted at the websites themselves. The biggest counter-argument to Raskin’s proposal is that there’s nothing stopping a site from displaying these icons and then doing the opposite.

Raskin’s solution is to make the privacy icons supersede the written privacy policy. “When you add a Privacy Icon to your privacy policy,” writes Raskin, “it says the equivalent of ‘No matter what the rest of this privacy policy says, the following is true and preempts anything else in this document…’”

In other words, sites using the icons maliciously would face legal consequences. Of course differences in international laws mean enforcing such violations would be complex.

Still, as Raskin points out, privacy policies are fast becoming a selling point for many sites. Nearly every site we’ve tested lately has some sort of large, obvious banner that proudly proclaims the site will never share your data. Those are the kinds of sites, says Raskin, that would adopt privacy icons.

But it’s still unlikely any site would ever adopt the negative icons. If you’re sharing everything users give you with anyone who pays for it, you probably don’t want to advertise that. So the privacy icons actually become most useful when they aren’t present. Of course, as Raskin writes, “people don’t generally don’t notice an absence; just a presence.”

The solution to that problem is to make the privacy icons machine readable. The workflow would be something like this: You visit a website and decide to sign up. When Firefox encounters the sign-up form, it looks for the privacy icon. If it finds it, Firefox displays it. If Firefox doesn’t see an icon it warns you that your information may be shared using the negative icon. Either way, you know where you stand.

For now the privacy icons, good idea though they may be, are a long way from reality. Raskin calls the current mockups an “alpha” release and since Raskin is leaving Mozilla, the future of the project is unclear. If you’d like to get involved, head over the Mozilla Drumbeat Privacy Icons project page.

LG Plans to spend $18 Billion to Save their Business in 2011

lg logo

LG needs to pull it together to save the South Korean business, specifically within its handset sector. LG is the fourth largest business in South Korea, but has been experiencing a downturn and hopes to increase their investment by 12%, totally a record $18.2 billion.

LG seems to be placing all its chips into the smartphone and tablet divisions, as it did see large success after releasing its LG Optimus One Android smartphone, its biggest selling handset to date. This comes as great news to LG after reporting record losses in the 3rd quarter of 2010.

Here’s what they had to say;

The focus for 2011 will be bolstering our core businesses of smartphones, tablets, TVs and large-sized displays and also supporting new growth engines such as solar cell, new types of displays and small-sized display panels for smartphones and tablets,

It’s clear that LG plans on boosting their mobile technology, and its probably safe to say they’ll stick with Android as the OS to run its mobile technology after the successful launch of the Optimus One.

An iPhone Stylus to Save Your Fingers From the Cold

The Touch Pad Pencil by Suck UK

The Touch Pad Pencil by Suck UK

I think it’s safe to say that winter is upon us once again, and for us geeks that can make using some of our favorite gadgets a bit tricky. I’m talking of course about trying to operate the touchscreen of your iPhone/iPad/Android etc. outside in the cold. At the beginning of the touchscreen revolution you had two choices — have cold fingers or put it away until later – but now there are many more options to help us keep twittering whilst waiting for a train on a freezing platform.

Several companies are now making gloves with special conductive fingertips — my favorites are Dots Gloves, and more recently North Face have joined in with their eTip range. Grathio has a great Instructable on how to make your favorite pair of old gloves work by sewing conductive thread onto the fingertips. And then there’s a whole bunch of companies making styluses that will do the job just as well as your finger, but leaving your hands snug and warm inside your gloves.

I’ve always thought of a stylus as an evolutionary regression for the iPhone, harking back to dim and distant days of Palm Pilots or even the Newton, but this one from SUCK UK might have just changed my mind. Styled like a chunky, worn down, retro school pencil complete with an eraser (but no chewing marks), the Touch Pad Pencil is made from a special electro-conductive rubber to work perfectly with the capacitive screen on your touchscreen gadget, and for only £7.50 it would make a perfect stocking filler. Hint, Hint…

The only downside I can see is that if the little one spots me ‘drawing’ on my iPhone, she might pick up any old pen and do the same!

Review: Save the Humans—6th Mega’s Puff Pufffor iPhone

Puff Puff

Some people are fond of saying that it isn’t the Earth that needs saving—the Earth will be around long after we’re gone. No, it’s we humans who need saving from ourselves. (Need evidence? Look no further than the Gulf, where another oil rig just caught fire.) 6th Mega is a new indie game developer dedicated to preventing the sixth mega extinction. Their flagship product is Puff Puff, an underwater arcade game, and they’re contributing 30% of net proceeds to ecosystem restoration with a focus on the Gulf of Mexico marine habitat. A new version of Puff Puff just hit the iTunes store this week

Puff Puff screenshots

Puff Puff screenshots: the coral reef and the Gulf oil spill. Click to enlarge.

In Puff Puff, you play a diodon holocanthus, the spiny pufferfish, navigating your way through coral reefs or the Gulf oil spill. The game has an interesting control system, combining the accelerometer with pinch/squeeze gestures. Pinching and squeezing causes the puffer to deflate and inflate, which then affects its buoyancy and moves it up or down on the screen. Tilting the screen makes the puffer move forward or back, though there’s a constant automatic forward movement. Grab power-ups for a speed boost, keep your energy levels up, or temporary shield, but avoid the obstacles—three hits and you die (unless you find the extra lives). Enemies will float by as well—sharks in the coral reef and robo-subs in the Gulf—but you can hit them if you’ve got your spines extended.

Puff Puff is nicely designed and the graphics really do a great job of putting you in an underwater world. I haven’t seen any other games with this sort of control, so it’s a cool use of the iPhone’s capabilities. The goal of the game is simply to get as far as possible, so it can get a little monotonous after a while, but an upcoming update will add some new enemies, and the two levels give you a change of scenery.

Here’s a little video of gameplay (from version 1.0, which doesn’t have the Gulf Spill level):

What’s also neat is that 6th Mega is releasing Puff Puff as “goodware”—they’re distributing the source code for free and encouraging remixes. I’d love to see what somebody else can do with the app as well.

Puff Puff is $.99 in the iTunes store. Of course, if you really want to help save the humans, 6th Mega encourages you to donate to The Nature Conservancy’s Adopt a Coral Reef program.

Wired: Unique controls using pinch/squeeze and accelerometer give the game a different feel; 6th Mega donates 30% of proceeds to conservancy efforts.

Tired: Could use a little more variety along the way.

Disclosure: 6th Mega provided a review copy of Puff Puff.

Save Betsy is Like Doodle Jump on the Farm

save betsy iphoneSave Betsy is another version of the accelerometer-based jumping game that has become so popular for iPhone. It is akin to Doodle Jump, but unlike Doodle Jump, the leader of all such games where iTunes rankings are concerned, Save Betsy, has a seriously twisted vegan (or anti-vegan) theme, but don’t worry, no cows were harmed in the making.

Save Betsy stars Betsy the cow, who is trying to avoid the grills and meat grinders that will turn her into steak. As you lead her higher and higher, you can use her special ability to rid her path of meat-making obstacles, hide her in the haystacks, and try to jump her over the moon for higher and higher scores.(…)

Bargain Hunters rejoice! – Sccope aims to save you pennies!

sccope

I hate spending money. If I can save $.20 on a can of mushrooms, I’ll do it, and when it comes to big purchases I will scour flyers and websites looking for the best possible deal I can find. Only one problem, I can’t exactly lug my laptop around with me while I’m actually in the store, so I’m forced to go with the information I’ve already gleaned from home. Sccope is an app with the mission to help you save those hard earned dollars, giving you the ability to compare prices right there in the store on your trusty device. Three options are available to you when you want to check an item, you can scan a barcode, enter a product number, or browse for it by category. Really want that particular TV, but the price comparisons aren’t enough to get you to buy right now? Add it to your wishlist and get notified when the price drops so you can zip down and grab it. The service even includes live coupons from some of the larger retailers, saving you the time of searching for them. At a price point of $2,99, it’s pretty reasonable, considering it could pay for itself by finding one bargain. Available in App World for OS 4.5 and up, but you’ll need to be running 5.0 if you want to use barcode scanning. The Storm series is also not supported at this time.

Groupon and Gilt Apps Bring Two New Ways to Save to Your Android Handset

This image has no alt text

Two new apps have recently become available in the Android Market, and while they are both independent of each other, they share the common task of finding you great deals and saving you money. Groupon and Gilt offer two different ways to experience savings through online purchases as well as at local shops and chain stores.

groupon

We’ll start with Groupon, which offers discounts based on the idea of group buying and can save you up to 90% on purchases. Users purchase coupons at discounted rates for savings, something as basic as spending $20 on a coupon getting you $60 worth of fitness classes to free or discounted admission to entertainment. The 1.0 release of the app gives users access to the deal of the day, access to purchased Groupons for quick redemption in-store, and the ability to search nearby businesses. There are still more features to be added in later version such as access to the Groupon forums and a widget.

giltapp

Gilt is a slightly different beast focused on getting you the best price for normally expensive designer goods through online sales that typically last for a limited time period. Gilt is invitation only, but if you have a friend who is a member they can quickly get you in on the savings by flashing a QR code from the app. Once in you can browse upcoming sales, get all the details on ongoing sale items, get alerted to the start and end of sales, and even install a Sales Clock widget for quick monitoring.

I don’t have much experience with Gilt, but quite a few of my friends live and die by Groupon and have come up with some great through the service. If you’re ready to get your save follow the QR codes below.

One month ago to the day I made a blog post here about the availability of Tank Recon 3D for the BlackBerry Storm2, which is an awesome first person shooter game that puts you in the seat of a tank as you go through various missions shooting down planes, AT guns, tanks and more. When I first made the announcement post about Tank Recon 3D I only posted a couple of screen captures, but now we have two videos (one above, one below) you can watch that show off Tank Recon 3D’s gameplay and 3D graphics in much more detail. I’ve spent quite a few hours now playing this game on my BlackBerry Storm2 – it definitely gets my two thumbs up!

Save On All themes from Blackberry Themes by KD – Sale Ends April 11th!

Blackberry Themes by KD

Jason emailed me last week to give me a heads up on an awesome sale he’s having in honour of his one-year anniversary in business. Being a long time member of the forums, (and a former Storm owner) I have had my eye on KD Themes the entire year he’s been in business. He first caught my eye with Curve and has continued his trend of creating great-looking, functional themes with such titles as Optix and leading up to his latest, Slides. Jason has also put a really interesting spin on this sale, making it so that the earlier you buy, the more you save. The breakdown is as follows:

  • April 5th: $0.99
  • April 6th: $1.49
  • April 7th: $1.99
  • April 8th: $2.49
  • April 9th: $2.99
  • April 10th: $3.49
  • April 11th: $3.99

As of April 12th: all themes will be back to the original price of $4.99

If you’re a fan of KD, and have a couple bucks burning a hole in your pocket, jump on it sooner, rather than later, and make those dollars stretch that much farther. You can find all of KD’s themes here in the CB Store.

Test Your Websites in iPad Peek, Save Yourself $500

ipadpeek

Want to see what your website looks like on the iPad? Get a load of iPad Peek, a new web-based emulator that shows you how any site renders on the new Apple device.

Click on the black frame above the browser to switch between landscape and portrait modes. You can also test your web forms by mouse-typing on the virtual virtual keyboard.

iPad Peek has a few limitations. There’s no touch scrolling, ads produce pop-ups, and embedded Flash videos and objects will still render inside the emulator even though the real iPad doesn’t do Flash. So, it’s basically a Webkit wrapper set to a fixed width and height. But, it does give you a pretty close approximation of how your site will look on the new shiny.

Also, Mashable has instructions for changing your Firefox user input string to that of the iPad:

Type “about:config” in the address bar, click the right mouse button, select New – String, and name it “general.useragent.override”. Then enter the value “Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; U; CPU OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B334b Safari/531.21.10″.
