HTC leaked flagship seen again with better images

htcleak02062011

Looks like the new HTC device that’s been seen in the wild before has made another appearance. At least this time, it’s a nice crisp image giving us a great look at its design and body. The one who took the photo claims that it belonged to a “client” and that it resembles the size of an HTC Legend. Although we don’t really have any other information, we are hopeful that we’ll see more of this device (and others) at MWC next week.

Samsung SCH-R910, Also Known As the Forte, Seen Up-Close, Making its Way to MetroPCS Soon

We’ve seen the SCH-R910 popping up here and there, and it’s recently been identified as the Samsung Forte, heading for MetroPCS. Finally, through some (intentional?) leaks, we’re starting to see it up close. It’s got the tell-tale TouchWiz UI that Samsung is so fond of lately, and that does nothing to squash rumors that this might be a Galaxy S variant.

Pictures and video at the source link. Still no solid word on a release date, but we’re looking for it.  More on this phone as it develops.

Sony Xperia PlayStation Phone seen on video here

psphone1

There’s been a lot of news over the last couple of months regarding the anticipated, but as of yet not completely confirmed, PlayStation Phone. It’s been seen on video in the past, branded with Sony Xperia family, speculated for a Spring 2011 release, and now caught on camera again playing PSOne titles.

The games are being played through what looks like a ROM or emulator, with PSOne titles Resident Evil 2 and Rage Racer. And although this still isn’t an official model or software release, it still looks pretty cool having it all in one handheld.

Check out the video below.

Netflix on Android, why we haven’t yet seen an App

Are you still wondering why Netflix has not yet released an Android version of its app? After a recent announcement of Netflix on the Windows Phone 7 platform, Netflix finally decided to speak on the absence of the Android version of the streaming app.

The product development team, via The Netflix Blog, provided an update on enabling Netflix streaming support for Android. In a nutshell, they are delaying the launch of Netflix for the Android platform due to some security concerns they have over the Android platform. Netflix fears the release of this app might make it easier for pirates to steal content via the Netflix app.

According to Greg Peters, Netflix Product Developer :

We regard Android as an exciting technology that drives a range of great devices that our members could use to instantly watch TV shows and movies from Netflix. We are eager to launch on these devices and are disappointed that we haven’t been able to do so already. The hurdle has been the lack of a generic and complete platform security and content protection mechanism available for Android.

The same security issues that have led to piracy concerns on the Android platform have made it difficult for us to secure a common Digital Rights Management (DRM) system on these devices. Setting aside the debate around the value of content protection and DRM, they are requirements we must fulfill in order to obtain content from major studios for our subscribers to enjoy.

Although we don’t have a common platform security mechanism and DRM, we are able to work with individual handset manufacturers to add content protection to their devices.

Unfortunately, this is a much slower approach and leads to a fragmented experience on Android, in which some handsets will have access to Netflix and others won’t. This clearly is not the preferred solution, and we regret the confusion it might create for consumers. However, we believe that providing the service for some Android device owners is better than denying it to everyone.

The good news is that they will eventually launch the app early next year. The bad news – it will only be on select Android devices. According to the blog post, Netflix will eventually work on developing a standard, platform-wide solution for all Android-based devices – but who knows when? Besides, I wonder what percentage of Android devices will fall under the ‘select devices’ category. Until then, we might just have to wait.

By the looks of it, Netflix seems intimidated by the openness of the Android platform. Android’s popularity seems to pose a threat to their streaming service. Should they be taking advantage of the popularity of Android devices to get their content to the masses or should the company play it safe by preventing piracy which could cripple their business? I think they should just give it a try and see. After all, sometimes you really never know until the app is actually pushed out.

Do you think it’s a good move by Netflix to release its app to a select few Android devices?

HTC Merge Seen with Cellebrite – May Be Launching Soon?

merge_cellebrite

The HTC Merge is seen in the Cellebrite list above. This can only mean that the HTC Merge is going to be launching fairly soon. We reported here that the HTC was seen on Verizon’s system, as well as possibly getting launched on November 18th at a special Verizon “Droid” red carpet event.

The Cellebrite program is an application used to transfer existing data from one device to another (typically used by carriers) such as contacts, images, and data.

We’ll wait and see if this Thursday is when we’ll actually see the HTC Merge available.

These three photos appear to be the first seen taken with the Nexus S

It seems that a couple photos taken with the recently leaked Galaxy S have emerged, and they reveal that the phone appears to only be sporting a 5MP camera. This is a bit disappointing for a next generation device, especially when older devices like the Droid Incredible feature 8MP cameras. The evidence comes from the photo information, which reveals the following:

It’s possible this is a hoax, but given the fact that pictures of the device have already leaked, this would be somewhat of a silly hoax at this point. Continue reading after the break to see the other two photos.

Orion dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 chip seen in the wild

We first told you about the Samsung’s Orion processor back in September, which is a dual-core ARM Cotrex-A9 chip. It seems this beast was on display at last week’s ARM Technology Conference, and although it wasn’t shown displaying anything on the big screen, a Futuremark demo was spotted running on a smaller display.

There are rumors that this may land in a device or two before the end of the year, but chances are you wont see anything using this until 2011. Once it hits though, watch out, cause it’s sure to pump out some jaw dropping benchmarks.

Samsung I5510 is seen at IFA

Ah…the Samsung I5510. How our hearts have yearned for you so.  The Samsung I5510 was spotted at IFA in Berlin, and sports Android 2.2, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, and a 5-megapixel camera. We can expect it to be a mid-range device, almost like a Samsung Gem, except the I5510 will tout Froyo goodness. The device will likely be a less impressive, and therefore more affordable, version of the Samsung Galaxy S Pro. Other than those specs, the device is still a mystery.

Viliv X10 Tablet Seen at Computex Running Android

Viliv is a company known for their Windows-based tablets, and while their X10 tablet was seen at Computex also running Windows 7, an Android 2.1 version also showed its glass. With a 10-inch, 1366×768 display, the X10 doesn’t skimp on visual candy. You’ll get 720p HD video playback and some impressive 3D graphics to boot.

x10-4

Though the exact internals powering the vivid graphics and videos weren’t given, the device does feature an SD card slot, USB connectivity, and Wi-Fi. We can expect 3G and WiMax models as well. While the unit showed off was running on Android 2.1, Viliv is saying it will ship with Android 2.2, so get your Flash goggles ready.

Droid Incredible as you’ve never seen it

Unboxing videos are generally pretty boring.  However, toss in some stop motion video and unbox a device to it’s gills…well, that makes for some interesting video.  Thanks to the people over at TechRestore for making the video and satisfying our curiosity of what Incredible looks like under the hood without having to void a warranty.

Muppet Awesomeness You Probably Haven’t Seen Before

The Muppets are like popcorn and ice cream: it’s hard to imagine anyone not liking them. We Muppets fans love to see the new stuff The Muppets Studio is releasing online — nobody enjoyed their “Bohemian Rhapsody” more than we did — but what’s a rare treat is seeing old Muppets material that we’ve never seen before.

Here, then, are two amazing videos of camera tests done by The Muppet Movie director Jim Frawley, featuring primarily Jim Henson and Frank Oz — or Kermit and Fozzie/Miss Piggy, depending on your point of view (Sweetums is also featured). It’s a great insight into just how perfectly the two men’s talents fit together, how well they knew each other, and how incredibly creative and funny they could be even when ad-libbing. If these videos do not make you laugh, then I can’t imagine what you would ever find funny. And, if you’re like me, these videos will also make you (once again) sad at the enormous injustice of Henson’s death at age 53 nearly twenty years ago.

After the jump I’ve added a third video, from the filming of Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas. It’s not quite as funny as the other two, but it has some great moments in it. Enjoy!
