Leaked: OS 5.0.0.973 for the BlackBerry Storm2 9520

Storm2 9520

It’s been a while since the BlackBerry 9520 saw any love, so I’m sure a lot of you out there are happy to see OS 5.0.0.973 pop up over at BBLeaks today. Grab your cables and fire up apploader or desktop manager to get started. Remember folks it’s a leak, not currently an official OS, take caution. Disclaimers apply as always. Let us know in the comments any changes you see!

*OS Disclaimer – Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you’re comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base – do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

Watch Tank Recon 3D for the BlackBerry Storm2 Action Videos; Promo: First 500 Customers Save $2!

One month ago to the day I made a blog post here about the availability of Tank Recon 3D for the BlackBerry Storm2, which is an awesome first person shooter game that puts you in the seat of a tank as you go through various missions shooting down planes, AT guns, tanks and more. When I first made the announcement post about Tank Recon 3D I only posted a couple of screen captures, but now we have two videos (one above, one below) you can watch that show off Tank Recon 3D’s gameplay and 3D graphics in much more detail. I’ve spent quite a few hours now playing this game on my BlackBerry Storm2 – it definitely gets my two thumbs up!

Tank Recon 3D Promotion – Save $2: Lone Dwarf Games, the developer of Tank Recon 3D, have created 500 coupon codes (first come first serve) that will knock $2 off the price when you used in our mobile app store or on-device CrackBerry Superstore. The coupon code is CBTankRecon3D. That means you can grab it for $5.99 vs. the normal $7.99 price. Be sure to hurry if you want to take advantage of this one.

Official OS 5.0.0.607 for the Storm2 Available from Verizon Wireless

Storm2

Reports are flying in and the forums are lighting up with the news that OS 5.0.0.607 is now available for some Verizon users via Wireless Update. We knew this was coming today, just not when, but it looks like it the OS is being made available already. If you haven’t seen the option to update OTA don’t fret, it should pop up on the homescreen (or you can check directly under Options > Advanced Options > Wireless Update). You’ll need to be running an official Verizon OS in order to update OTA, so unfortunately for some this means downgrading first. You can also download the OS from the Verizon Software Downloads page for an easy Desktop Manager install. If you need help installing, check out our BlackBerry 101 on using the Wireless Update feature. Leave a comment and let us know if you have installed the update and how it went.

Need for Speed Shift 3D for BlackBerry Storm2 Game Review (and comparison to Bold 9700 and iPhone)

Back on St. Patty’s day we announced here on the blogs that Need for Speed Shift 3D for the BlackBerry Storm2 finally hit App World. This is one of the games that was demoed back at the BlackBerry Developer showing off RIM’s newly announced Open GL APIs. With the 3D version of the game now available for the Storm2, I gave it a download and walkthrough and also compared to the 2D version available for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 (does not support Open GL) as well as the version of Need for Speed Shift available for the iPhone in Apple’s App Store. Watch the video above to see how it unfolds and read on for some more details.
