Brainchild Intros The Kineo Tablet, Focuses On Education Android Style (Video)

If it’s one thing I can appreciate most, it’s using technology in and for an educational milieu.  Over the years I can admit that having a smartphone within arms reach has increased my knowledge exponentially by always having pertinent information at my finger tips.  It’s nice to note that companies like Brainchild feel the same way.  Today, at the Florida Educational Technology Conference, Brainchild introduced the Kineo, a 7″ Android tablet that is geared towards educating our youth with today’s tablet technology.  The device sports an 800 x 480 touchscreen, 800 MHz processor, 2GB of storage along with WiFi and HDMI out support.  Hit the break for more info, pics and a video.

iPod Style Samsung Device to Be Displayed at CES in Vegas

CES is just around the corner my friends. I don’t know about you guys, but I am super excited to see the new underground ridiculous tech toys that could cause my divorce.

One of the newest additions from Samsung is supposed to be unveiled this year. The latest addition looks just like the Galaxy S I9000 and is happily called Galaxy Player (for now). It will sport many of the same specs as its predecessor with the exception of the 3G bands and cell service. That means you will be able to pick up one of these soon without having to worry about a contract.

What this device is suppose to be running:

  • Android 2.2 Froyo OS
  • 1GHz CPU
  • 4-inch Super Clear LCD screen
  • WVGA resolution (800×480)
  • SoundAlive audio enhancing technology
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • 3.2MP rear camera with front facing camera for video calling,
  • GPS
  • HD video playback
  • microSD card slot
  • Android Market and Samsung Apps access

Pretty much a Galaxy S i9000. The most recent updated news on this device also puts it having 3 models available: an 8Gb, 16Gb and 32Gb. Although this device won’t officially be a phone, it will support VoIP services such as Skype and Google voice.

It looks really nice to me, I have no doubt this should sell rather well if the price point is overshot. I wouldn’t mind having one of these sitting on my desk at home. I will be on the hunt to find Samsung while I am CES, so stay tuned to get more information on this device and many others in just a few weeks.

Would you buy one of these instead of an iPod if they were priced similarly or even lower? How do you feel about another Samsung device coming out with Froyo while rest of us are still on 2.1?

Leaked: OS 6.0.0.407 For The BlackBerry Style 9670

BlackBerry Style owners are seeing some love today. OS 6.0.0.407 is now available for download although, it is a leaked version so you all know what to do with it. Make sure you run a backup of your device first and let us all know in the comments or in the forums how it’s working out for you.

If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you’re comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. BlackBerry Style 9670 now available from TELUS

TELUS users who’ve been waiting for the BlackBerry Style to arrive can now get their hands on one. TELUS has listed the deivce on their website for $79.99 on a new 3-year contract. Although, Future Shop still has their pricing set at $49.99 with a new 3-year as well. No matter where you go to grab one, the fact that it’s still priced under that $100 mark is pretty sweet for one of the latest BlackBerry devices out there.

BlackBerry Style 9670 dummy units now arriving at TELUS

BlackBerry Style dummy units now arriving at TELUS

TELUS was quick to confirm they’d also be releasing the BlackBerry Style 9670 shortly after the initial Sprint announcement but no official date was actually set at that time. But, given that the dummy unit devices are now showing up at retail locations launch surely cannot be far off. There is a suggested price of $399.99 outright being put out there but of course, that’s all subject to change at any point. Be sure to check out our full BlackBerry Style break down for specs, videos and pics. Anyone on TELUS going to be grabbing one up once released?

Sprint BlackBerry Style 9670 review

A Hands-On Review of the Sprint BlackBerry Style 9670

BlackBerry Style 9670 Sprint

At first the idea of a flip style BlackBerry actually appealed to me because I work with children and my phone is usually in my pocket the majority of my day. The first few pictures released of the rumored device were UGLY and I couldn’t possibly see me owning one. Then a few more pictures leaked out showing a sleeker looking Style and I began to reconsider. When CrackBerry announced that Sprint was allowing reservations of the device at the same time I was eligible for an upgrade, I thought I’d try it out. Worst case scenario, I use the Sprint 30 day guarantee and return the device if I absolutely hate it. I can now say the Style has won me over, and will be joining the rest of the BlackBerry devices in my collection. Read on to see the rest of my review.

BlackBerry Bold 9780, Style and PlayBook all announced… what can we expect to see next from Research In Motion?!

What's next from BlackBerry?
Any bets on what kind of BlackBerry we’ll see next from Research In Motion?!

On the last RIM earnings call, Co-CEO Jim Balsillie said we’d see some "acceleration" from RIM towards the end of the calendar year. After what was an extremely quiet start of 2010 on the new BlackBerry front, over the last few months RIM has pushed out and/or announced a bunch of new devices onto the market. Along with BlackBerry 6, we saw the Pearl 3G and Bold 9650 get announced at WES. The Curve 3Gs followed suit as did the BlackBerry Torch. And now in what felt like rapid succession, the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet got announced as did the BlackBerry Style and BlackBerry Bold 9780. With all of the above now announced and/or out on the market, our CrackBerry minds can’t help but wonder What’s Next??

Sprint BlackBerry Style goes on sale today. You getting one?

Happy Halloween!!! October 31st is here, and in addition to all the trick of treating that will be taking place today it also means that the BlackBerry Style from Sprint is now on sale! We called around to a few Sprint stores yesterday and it looks like most have it in stock and ready to buy TODAY. If you’re getting one, drop us a comment and be sure to let us know how it goes and what your first impressions are.

You can check out my video first impressions and overview video of the Style above. My full review will be coming this week. I’ve actually been rocking the Style all weekend in Las Vegas (been getting a few weird glances though – maybe I should have grabbed the Steel Grey one instead of Royal Purple) but all in all have been really liking the phone. BlackBerry 6 is snappy on it, the camera has been taking good photos and the battery has been getting me through the day ok. If you’re a flip phone fan the Style is a no brainer — especially at Sprint’s attractive $99/2year contract pricing — and I could even see some non-flip phone fans getting won over by it too. It’s a nice little addition to the BlackBerry lineup.

If you’re looking for more info on the Style, check out the press release here and head to your local Sprint store!

Standing Up For Skateparks — Tony Hawk Style

Tony Hawk. Mentioning that name brings one thing to mind: skateboarding. His name is synonymous with the sport that millions of kids around the world participate in each year at skate parks, driveways, public streets, and wherever. Tony Hawk has a powerful brand, and he’s taken that brand to spread his passion of skateboarding by helping put skate parks in neighborhoods around the United States that can least afford it. This past weekend was a Stand Up For Skateparks fundraiser, and GeekDad was invited to cover the event.

In the U.S. it’s estimated that over 13 million people participate in skateboarding; however, there are only about 3,000 skate parks nationwide. Communities face the challenge of having people skateboard where it is illegal or unwanted and yet lack the funding to provide a place for skateboarding to take place. The Tony Hawk Foundation was started in 2002, and since that time over $3.1 million dollars has been raised and distributed to fund or help fund skate parks in 444 communities.

Tony’s Stand Up For Skateparks events are some of the primary vehicles to help raise funds for the grants. As a dad of 4 children, Tony and the foundation have crafted Stand Up For Skateparks into a family-friendly, high-action event.  My youngest son and I went to the October 17th event in Los Angeles, and with the exception of two things, had a great time.

This is a high-energy event with sponsors you would associate with skateboarding – the X-games, Bell, Nixon, Omatic snowboards, Tech Deck, Quicksilver, and others.

Some of my favorite booths were from T-Mobile (they supplied the inflatable slide games), explore.org (they brought Lego bricks), and Clif Kids (fun crafts and games along with healthy snacks). Activision was the title sponsor bringing their soon-to-be-released Tony Hawk: SHRED video game. Everyone got a chance to try out the game which doesn’t release until next week. Look for a review here in the near future.

Outside of participating in both a live and silent auction (which raised $750,000 for grants to skateparks), families had no shortage of food, games, and prizes to fill the afternoon.  Looming large in the middle of the event was the ramp. Tony Hawk, a BMX bike rider, and other skateboarders were scheduled to perform mid-afternoon. That’s when we hit one of the two things that was a negative affect on the afternoon – the weather. A slow steady drizzle and cloudy skies kept the weather tarps over the ramp and the skaters off the ramp. (Side note: I thought it never rained in L.A.)

The other thing that negatively affected the afternoon was the band — whose name I won’t mention to avoid providing them any publicity. They did a several song set that I didn’t have a problem with; however at the end of the set, their lead singer let off a string of expletives completely out of place for a family-friendly event. He lost the crowd at that point, tried to salvage the situation with a (lame) joke/disclaimer, and even mumbled “no one’s listening to me” as the band got up to leave. A fitting exit from the stage.

Towards the end of the afternoon the weather did break, so the tarps were pulled down and 150,000 BTU jet heaters were brought out to dry off the wooden ramp. About 3:30pm Tony Hawk on his skateboard and Mat Hoffman on his BMX tested things out. Soon the rest of the skaters came out to warm up and we were treated to an incredible show of skating and BMX tricks.  These guys (and one woman) could get some really big air and perform some jaw-dropping tricks.

All in all, with the exception of the headlining band and the way they chose to end their performance, it was a great afternoon for a good cause.

Full disclosure: transportation, lodging, and entrance to the event were provided. Read the full story

Research In Motion now showing off the BlackBerry Style before it hits stores

BlackBerry Style

Now that the BlackBerry Style is all official, Research In Motion and Sprint have been taking the device on the road and showing it to folks even before it gets into stores. Probably something that should have been done at DevCon but, hey we’re not judging here. The fine folks over at Engadget had a NYC meetup and had the chance to get a little close with the BlackBerry Style. Of course, we’ll be giving the device a full run through shortly here on CrackBerry but the lighting in the above picture does show off the device rather nicely. Be sure to check out the full spec sheet, image gallery and press release we previously posted if the 9670 is your Style.

BlackBerry Style looking good on camera, stacked up against other models

It’s not her first video appearance and you’ll have your own opinion as to whether it looks good or not, but if you are craving to see more of the BlackBerry Style, keep reading. PoderPDA has namely put up a couple of videos on youtube showing the clamshell in all its glory. This particular device rocks firmware v6.0.0.203 and makes the Pearl Flip look unstylish in comparison (sorry for the pun). The first video (above) shows off the hardware while the second video (below) takes a look at BlackBerry 6. The videos are en Español, but there is not much we already do not know about. So grab some snacks, lean back and enjoy the show!

BlackBerry Style 9670 appears in Sprint internal systems

BlackBerry Style

Yesterday we saw the upcoming BlackBerry Style 9670 pass through the FCC systems. Today, we get an internal shot of Sprints imagery material database which shows us that the BlackBerry Style is set to get all gussied up for Sprint marketing. Word is once device reach this stage in the game, it’s typically only a matter of a few weeks before the device gets announced and then another 60 days for release. If all that holds true, we could possibly see an announcement at DevCon with a actual device roll out sometime in November. Looks like Kevin was right about the name though. Glad I never placed any bets with him. Thanks Anonymous.

Unique iPad Cases Made for Personal Style

ipad-case

When you start looking for a case it can seem that there are more choices than there are iPad owners. There is an ocean of options: hard, soft, ultra-protection, ultra-stylish, colorful, classy, low-cost, high-dollar. Well, you get the idea.

It helps to narrow the search by defining your criteria. For instance, right now I’m looking for a case that offers some protection but still makes it easy to remove the iPad for use, say when sitting in a coffeehouse. It must look at least as good as a naked iPad, and have some personality. Since I already own Apple’s basic iPad case, this time I’m leaning more towards form over function.

Who wants another “me-too” case? It’s time for something awesome, something that makes a statement. After looking around, here is a selection of unique cases with “personality” written all over them. (…)

Give your BlackBerry a sense of style with Black Out or Belicious from Ahaz Designs – 30 free themes up for grabs!

blackout/belicious

A couple of weeks ago, I featured Belicious in the weekly Theme Roundup, and Alex from Ahaz tipped me off to another of his themes, Black Out. Both themes are clean and great-looking, chock full of custom work. If you want to read a little more on Belicious, catch my original write up here. Where Belicious is geared toward the female audience, Black Out is one for the boys, featuring a fully skinned "blacked-out" look that’s easy on the eyes. I particularly love the message lists, which are fully black with a light focus. The theme includes a full set of custom white icons, which show extremely well against the dark background.Simple and straightforward, the main addition to the homescreen’s function is a hideable weather slot that is controlled via hotkeys. Both are available in the CB store for $2.99 each for multiple devices including the Storm, Bold and Curve series.

Contest: We have 30 copies of these themes to give away, the winner gets their pick of which one they want! Just leave a comment on this post to enter. Contest ends this Sunday at Midnight PST. Please only leave one comment, multiple entries wont count.

If you are eagerly awaiting the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 for AT&T, here is your chance to get yours reserved. The Sony Style site is offering pre-orders of the device for $129.99 with a two-year contract. The device is a bit late to the American market with a pre-2.0 version of Android on board, though hopefully this should see an update sometime soon. The Xperia line of phones has received a mixed reception so far, but they still offer some nice features with a unique take on an Android skin. Head over to Sony Style to get yours squared away now before the August 16th release.

X-wing style Android GPS navigation

First we get the Droid 2 R2-D2 edition, and now this! Flash-developer Christopher Caleb has created a very unique replacement for the standard Android GPS navigation, which replicates the classic X-wing targeting computer seen in Star Wars. This application is really only for novelty use, as many useful features, such as maps and points-of-interest, are rendered useless. The application allows the user to enter his or her destination, which will grow larger within the “trench” as it draws nearer. Naturally, tons of great Star Wars sound bites are used, including R2-D2 and Rebel Alliance pilot chatter. Of course, seeing the application in action does it way more justice, so check out the great video clip below:

App Review: Give Your Homescreen Speed and Style With LauncherPro

Ever feel like something was missing from your native Android launcher? If you are like me and you did feel this way, please read on as we review the best damn home-screen launcher replacement out there: LauncherPro! LauncherPro (for 2.x handsets only) is a simple and stylish Android launcher replacement. It really does everything the native 3-D launcher should have done from the beginning.  Put simply, LauncherPro is the most effective launcher that has the most options on the Android platform. It makes your home screen so much better.

If you have used ADW.Launcher or even Helix Launcher in the past you will be familiar with the way that LauncherPro looks. There is a four icon “dock” at the bottom of the screen, with contacts, browser, phone and messaging app’s icons.  While these may look generic at first, not to fear, they are changeable with a long press of the icon.  You can replace each with whatever application or shortcut you choose. Pretty sweet!I should also mention that the dock itself is also customizable.  Total, you can have up to 3 docks that you can swipe through at the bottom of the screen. A truly great and useful feature.

Swiping between screens is also a real breeze.  Overall it is fast and fluid.  The scrolling is as smooth as scrolling through your contacts; there are barely ever any hiccups and it works well. When you are in the launcher and hit the back button, the launcher icons “fly-out” and you return to your home screen.  It is all extremely fast.  Personally, I think Google really should buy these guys.  Seriously.

Overall,  LauncherPro is a slamdunk. There is actually so much more to say, but we have to limit the size of the post. If not, I could write forever.  To help users we have even listed some of the best features below.

Best Features

  • smooth home screen sliding
  • up to 7 home screens
  • fast 3-D Launcher
  • HTC Sense “helicopter view” by clicking on the home button
  • Customizable icons and dock
  • Scrollable widgets(don’t even ask HTC Sense widgets will not work)
  • LauncherPro Plus Calendar, People, and Bookmark Widgets (more to be added later)
  • Home-screen back up and so many options we can’t even name

If I were you and had not tried LauncherPro, you can use this link to install it. The regular version is free and the plus version is $2.99.  Both are well worth it!

boxBerry by KD, tab out your homescreen in style – 25 free copies to be won!

boxBerry

I got a tip on boxBerry the other day via email, and as usual decided to take a peek (seems any time "theme" is in the subject, compulsion kicks in). The "usual" part of the experience stopped immediately when I got to play with the theme. The homescreen looks fairly standard, but the concept hidden in those tabs at the left of the screen blew me away. Clicking each tab causes a new homescreen to open up, sliding the previous tab across the screen and stacking it at the side. Four screens are available, featuring access to a dedicated social media page, "utility" page, and a media page in addition to the standard homescreen with a Hidden Today. The user defined icons stay with you from screen to screen, so there is no pesky navigation to deal with to get to your favorite apps. As always, the theme is visually stunning, with a great use of color and flow from one screen to the next. To take a look at what I’m talking about, you can get a teaser from the Youtube video of the theme in action. Available for a huge array of devices, it’s currently on sale for 35% off in the CB store until July 18th.

Contest: We have 25 copies of boxBerry to give away! Just leave a comment on this post to enter. Contest ends this Sunday at Midnight PST. Please only leave one comment, multiple entries won’t count.
