It has been a crazy ride the last few weeks, as I am sure our reader’s have noticed. We were finally able to get a hold of our final winner for the Triple Tablet Give-a-way that we were running for the holidays, so without further ado we want to personally congratulate our winner, androidcrazykid. Check out what he wrote below.

How can ANYONE be worthy of such a magnificent device? Im just a random kid who is big into android and wants to promote it in any way he can. How can I say “I deserve a MAYLONG M-150 UNIVERSE Tablet for the 2010 holiday season,” when I don’t deserve such an awesome device.. I have a HTC Hero and it seems like every day the screen size gets smaller, and the speed gets slower. Would I love to have such a magnificent tablet that i can show off as being better than the iPad? YES!!! If Im chosen, I guarantee you I will promote your device more than anyone else! Thanks for making such an awesome giveaway!

Once I was able to contact him he was very excited and also very surprised that he actually won. I loved his reply to my email, check it out below.

I am really surprised and honored that you picked me! These contests are something you always hear about people winning but you never know if anyone really did. I will be sure to follow AndroidSPIN more often as a result!

Just a recap of what he has won.

Creative ZiiO 7 Inch Tablet and Zen Touch 2 Make an Appearance at CES [VIDEO]

This image has no alt text

Creative had their own nicely-sized booth on the show floor at CES and had their latest Android-based products on hand to show. The Ziio is a 7-inch tablet powered by Creative’s own custom chipset that allows them to handle high definition video and high quality audio of all sorts. I got a quick hands on with the thing, and I wasn’t the most impressed set of eyes there.

Things felt a bit sluggish when navigating the UI, and I’m not sure if it’s because the tablet wasn’t at its full brightness capacity, but picture quality while navigating the OS or watching a video couldn’t compare to other tablet offerings on display. Creative also showed off their easy-to-use headset management tool which allows you to easily switch between different bluetooth headsets – nothing that can’t be handled in Android natively without a few more presses of the screen. Other cool bits include a front-facing camera, and the ability to upgrade it to Android 2.2 down the line.

They also had the Zen Touch 2, a smaller PMP device which I likened to my old 30GB Creative Zen Vision: M. Creative left this one untouched, for the most part: the only customization I could see were in the icons for various standard Android apps and their music control widget. Check out the videos above (ZiiO) and below (Zen Touch 2) for a closer look. PS: I was able to later confirm that the Zen Touch 2 comes in at anywhere between $180-$199, depending on where you ship.

I won’t buy another phone (or tablet) until Honeycomb, neither should you

My friends, I have seen the beauty of Honeycomb (Android 3.0) and now there is nothing on the market today or in the next couple of months that can convince me to buy anything before the release of 3.0.  It is a smart and sexy design – this Honeycomb.

I have been lusting for Gingerbread for a long time.  I could not wait, I had to have it.  I installed it on my Evo 4G as soon as there was a half-baked rom available.  Well, that love has been destroyed.  Every version of Android that has been released to this point has left me wanting just a little bit more.  I’ve wanted a more attractive UI.  A refresh that sets Android so far apart from the competition that all the competition could do was scratch their heads and say, “What now?”

Honeycomb does it for me.  And as we have learned, Honeycomb is not just for tablets. If you haven’t watched the interview Engadget did with Matias Duarte, Android’s Director of User Experience, go watch it here (just a warning, this is a 25 minute interview).  If you want to skip ahead to verify my claim of not being just for tablets, skip ahead to roughly 10:15 in the video.

While at CES there were two phones that just blew me away….I even contemplated switching from Sprint to AT&T just to get my hands on the Atrix 4G.  The LG Optimus 2X is also incredibly desirable to me.  Neither phone came with 2.3 installed (although LG may very well end up getting 2.3 installed quickly).  The Atrix 4G on the other hand will most likely be stuck at Android 2.2 for a while.  I am not going to go off on Motorola for this.  Seeing as they have added the Webtop environment to the Atrix (enabling the laptop feature to work well) it would be foolish of us to believe that Motorola will be updating quickly.  *I would love to be wrong about this, and maybe with their early access to Honeycomb they will surprise us all.* It’s just a fact of life, any addition to the Android OS – Blur, Sense, TouchWiz, etc leads to extended wait times for updates to the newest version.  The Webtop environment will most likely cause delays as well.

This is the reason that I have chosen to not purchase another phone and certainly not allow myself to fall victim of the $299.00 Galaxy Tabs temptation.   T-Mobile shared this video with the world on youtube.  This is what I have been waiting for.  I have lost my love for Froyo and Gingerbread, my next phone/tablet must be Honeycomb.  Below is a video that T-Mobile posted showing off the LG G-Slate which we covered yesterday.

NEC dual-screen Android Cloud Communicator LT-W tablet first look

At CES, NEC has unveiled a hinged Android tablet with dual screens. NEC is not specifying if this is an all-work or all-fun tablet, it’s kind of in between. They suggest that it could make a great e-reader, a digital notebook for students, or whatever developers come up with. The “Cloud” part of the “Cloud Communicator” name means that NEC thinks the LT-W would be great for generic cloud services, but really, it’s just an Android 2.1 tablet with WiFi, Bluetooth, and optional 3G — there’s nothing special in here that makes it particularly well-adapted for magically pulling data out of the cloud.

As for the “Cloud Communicator” part of this tablet’s moniker, NEC is saying that this tablet would be great for generic cloud services. Other details on the LT-W; it’s running Android 2.1, interacts with a stylus, supports Wi-Fi connectivity, and optional 3G connectivity.

Qualcomm Mirasol Promo Video Reveals Pocketbook’s Tablet?

In late November, Pocketbook teased that they would be unveiling, at CES, their Mirasol Tablet/e-Reader in all of its glory.  However, it looks like it’s possible that Qualcomm is giving us a first peak at the device in a promo video for their Mirasol screen technology.  So far, there is very little that we do know about the tablet, but from the pics and the video we can see that the device will have, at the very least: Read More…

LG to announce “Optimus Tab”, Android tablet running Honeycomb

Tablet news has been pouring out of CES 2011. While most people are eagerly awaiting Motorola’s announcement of the XOOM tablet, LG’s got something up their sleeve as well.

LG will definitely be unveiling the Optimus Tab tomorrow at CES. Question is, does the Optimus Tab have what it takes to rival other Android tablets?

So far, we don’t know all too much about the LG Optimus Tab. LG did say that the tablet would have many “firsts”, which is always a good thing. The device may sport an 8.9 inch display, which is a nice compromise between the iPad’s 9.7 inch display, and the Galaxy Tab‘s 7 inch display. And of course, LG was smart to hold off on releasing a tablet until Honeycomb could be utilized on it. Outside of Android version and possible screen size, we’ll just have to wait for more details.

Video of Toshiba’s Tegra 2 powered Android tablet in action

On Monday we told you that Toshiba had announced a new Tegra 2 powered Android tablet which looks to be packing quite a bit of punch. With a 10.1-inch display at a 1280 x 800 resolution, a Tegra 2 chip, an accelerometer built in, a 5 megapixel camera as well as a 2 megapixel front-facing camera, and full-sized USB and HDMI ports, this puppy is shaping up to be one heck of a device. We don’t have any new info for you, but the folks over at Engadget have released a video showing this baby in action.

This demo unit is only running Android 2.2, so there’s no Honeycomb for you to look at. However, be sure to hit up after the break for this brief video demo of the still unnamed Toshiba Tegra 2 Android tablet.

Lenovo LePad Official and Hybrid IdeaPad U1 Combines Android, Windows, Laptop & Tablet

This image has no alt text

There’s no denying the Lenovo LePhone was one sexy piece of mobile hardware. Unfortunately, it never reached it’s arm far out of Asia, and much of the world has been deprived of Lenovo Android goodness. Until now.

Lenovo has officially announced 2 new Android devices, both of which will eventually be available around the world – they went on sale today in Asia.

The first device is the most straightforward; it’s called the Lenovo LePad, and as you probably guessed, it’s Lenovo’s Android Tablet and iPad competitor. We’ve been expecting this one for awhile and some of its specs include Android 2.2, snapdragon processor, 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 10.1-inch screen, front-facing camera, 3G and Wi-Fi, and Adobe Flash.

Now imagine you could take the LePad and snap it into (and out of) a portable laptop framework that booted Windows 7, allowing you to instantly switch between Windows 7 and Android. What would you have then?

Well, then you would have the Lenovo IdeaPad U1, and this thing is practically the definition of hybrid:

And if you’d rather just have the LePad with a keyboard, don’t fret, because THAT device comes with a dock that accomplishes just that:

The Lenovo LePad will cost about $599 while the IdeaPad U1 will cost $1399…no word yet on the cost of the LePad Dock.

Best of Both Worlds: Lenovo’s Dual Mode Hybrid System New Two-in-One Mobile
Device Speaks Android and Windows
LePad multi-touch Android slate for mobility and U1 laptop PC base for full Windows 7 experience

CES 2011, Las Vegas – January 5, 2011: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced the IdeaPad U1 hybrid with LePad slate, a unique two-in-one device that combines the mobility of a media rich, high-definition slate featuring access to Android applications and a keyboard base that provides a full Windows 7 computing experience. Offering great performance, both separately and together for a unique Hybrid Switch dual mode capability to switch between two different operating systems, Lenovo delivers to consumers an uncompromised mobile and computing experience.

“Our IdeaPad U1 and LePad truly fits the mobile lifestyle,” said Liu Jun, senior vice president, Idea Product Group, Lenovo. “Use the light-weight slate when you’re mobile, and then simply slide it into the U1 base when you need to create and edit content. Consumers shouldn’t have to adapt their lifestyle to technology, and this product definitely delivers twice the functionality and fun in one device.”

LePad Slate – Light, Long-Lasting and Application Rich

At under two pounds and only half an inch in thickness, the extremely portable LePad, powered by a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon™ processor, keeps users incredibly mobile all day with up to eight hours of battery life. LePad is available in four stylish colors with two different textures: scarlet, white, brown leather textured and black leather textured. The 10.1-inch widescreen and rich, high definition LePad slate runs in landscape and portrait modes. Users can consume content such as video, surf the Internet, access social networks from their fingertips, as well as tap out messages and email. It also has a front camera for taking pictures or video chat.

“We are excited that Lenovo has chosen our Snapdragon processor to power the LePad slate,” said Luis Pineda, senior vice president of marketing and product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “Lenovo’s innovative 3G connected slate, powered by our Snapdragon platform, enables a high performance, always connected experience for consumers on the go.”

Built upon Android 2.2., Lenovo customized the LePad slate with an optimized Android media experience on LePad’s larger screen size, starting with an attractive four-pane easy to use interface and a distinctive Lenovo-developed push service that delivers email, news and other content in real time, eliminating the need to constantly open a browser and log in. LePad leverages the Android ecosystem Lenovo has already established in China for the LePhone Smartphone. LePad users, in addition to enjoying many preloaded applications, also have access to thousands of custom Android apps from China’s top content partners that are optimized uniquely for its large screen. Lenovo plans for LePad to support Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1, looking to provide users a more complete Web browsing experience.

IdeaPad U1 for a Complete Laptop

For users who need the full functionality of a mainstream laptop for doing content creation with Windows-based productivity applications, the LePad can slide into the U1 base. The IdeaPad U1 hybrid laptop with a full keyboard transforms the user interface on LePad into Windows 7. The base features a Windows 7 Home Premium operating system and an Intel CULV processor. With the Hybrid Switch feature, users can seamlessly change operating systems to support a continuous Web browsing experience.

Pricing and Availability

The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 with LePad will be available beginning in China in the first quarter of 2011. The LePad slate can be purchased separately from the U1 base. The LePad slate starts at approximately RMB 3,499 (approximately US $520), and the U1 hybrid laptop starts at approximately RMB 8,888 (approximately US $1,300). For detailed pricing and availability for other markets, please contact your Lenovo representative.

More Asus tablet details emerge, does the suspected Android model have a detachable keyboard?

A couple days ago we showed you some leaked images of what appears to be an Android-powered Asus tablet (as evidenced by the physical buttons on the bottom). Although the photos were pretty high quality, they didn’t leave us with a whole lot of information about the device. Thankfully a new teaser video gives us a little more insight into what ASUS has up their sleeves in terms of their tablet offerings being presented at CES next week.

We still don’t know anything in terms of specs, but we now know the model names of the three devices: EP121, EP102 and EP101. The EP121 is a Windows tablet, but either the EP102 or EP101 (or perhaps both?) could be the Android device. There is also an EP71, which looks to be a small media player of some kind. That’s all we have for you right now, but we will be on hand at CES next week and we’ll be sure to follow this one for you. Continue after the break to catch the teaser vid as well.

Little girl opens Android tablet on Christmas morning to find porn pre-loaded

Tired of all the boring, standard apps that come with the Android platform? Well, maybe you should get yourself a Coby Kyros tablet, as it seems you could end up with some big surprises. According to a local news story, a little girl opened up a shiny new Android tablet on Christmas morning, started messing with it, and found some “questionable” apps pre-installed.

When asked about the situation, Michael Paladino, Coby’s Senior Product Manager, said:

There is nothing preprogramed from Coby. LIke any other internet device with an open platform, a wide range of content is available which may require parental oversight.

Pretty sad that Coby did nothing here to remedy the situation. Could the little 12-year-old girl have downloaded “Boobs! Butts! Babes!” and “Undress Me” on her own? Possibly, but that’s pretty unlikely. If I were the parents, I would – at the very least – be asking for an exchange for a brand new tablet… same model, of course.

Be sure to let us know what you think in the comments.

motorola-xoom

It looks as though the name of the new Motorola tablet we saw a cool video for a few days ago may be called the Motorola XOOM according to the buzz online today, along with some global trademarks seen in the wild. The tablet will be anounced at the CES 2011 show in a weeks time, and will be running Android Honeycomb, as hinted in the Motorola Promo teaser. Also noted, this tablet may not be coming with 4G LTE built in, but rather, hopes are that it will have available USB ports for 4G sticks instead.

Dell Looking Glass Tablet Passes Through FCC, Sim Card And SD Card Slot Revealed

Well, looks like the up and coming Dell Streak 7, or now the “Looking Glass”, is still responsible for multiple accounts of extreme and excessive salivation.  The tablet just passed through the hands of the FCC after being there for quite some time, and after spotting some Dell commercial spots, it shouldn’t be long before this baby is in the hands of the masses.  The Looking Glass is possibly headed to AT&T or T-Mobile land, now that it’s been approved for 3G data.  This info is based off of the device’s internal UMTS band specifications.  We’re still not sure if either carrier will have support for voice calls, but it seems like all of the necessary hardware is certainly there.  Hit the break for more info on the device and its internal specs, and get your drool on even more. Onkyo Can’t Wait For CES, Unveils 10.1″ Tablet

This image has no alt text

onkyo-ta117
Now this is a pre-Honeycomb tablet that I can sink my teeth into. Onkyo just let loose the TA117; it will come in two OS models: Windows and Android.

The specifications on this device are fairly impressive, given what we’ve been working with so far in the tablet department:

  • NVIDIA Tegra 250 1GHz processor
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • microSD slot
  • 2x USB slots
  • HDMI out
  • Front facing camera
  • 512MB DDR2 RAM
  • 8 or 16GB of internal storage
  • 10.1″ display
  • FroYo

There is no mention of price and for now it looks like Onkyo will only be offering this beauty in Japan.

[via Akihabara News | Read on Engadget | Onkyo]

If I bat my eyes pathetically enough, will Onkyo offer it stateside? Or at least send me one to ‘review’?

Dell Streak 7 inch Tablet Launching on T-Mobile

Dell-Streak-7

Dell had announced early last year their intentions on releasing a 7 inch tablet running android, which would likely be available on T-Mobile. Coming this year at the CES show (where it seems everyone is saving their announcements for lately), it’s likely that we’l hear more about when e can get this tablet, and confirm if we se it on T-Mobile.

We hope that with all the tablets being announced at CES 2011, that Dell either starts this with Android 2.3, or at least has an update path within a matter of weeks to Gingerbread, as we’ve heard many tablets will be launching with Gingerbread for 2011. Froyo is so…2010!

Acer’s gyroscope powered Android tablet gets video preview treatment

Remember Acer’s press event last month, where they showed off a new tablet… but refused to turn it on? Well, it looks like the company should have passed the message to keep them off along to their employees. That’s right: we’ve got a leaked video – courtesy of engadget – of the new gyroscope-touting, Android-powered tablet, doing what it does best. We can also see a slew of custom Acer branded apps, and, although the UI looks very beta, it’s pretty exciting stuff.

We expect to see this thing in the final stages around April, and probably touting Honeycomb. motorola tablet CES

You may have all heard about the video that Motorola sent out last week teasing about their highly anticipated, Area 51 secrecy-like, Android tablet. This week, Motorola has begun its email marketing campaign to continue on the push towards CES 2011. If you aren’t sure when CES is, you need look no further than Motorola’s website showing a ticker as well.

I know I’m excited to see what it’s all about, including the features Honeycomb will enhance on the new wave of tablets for 2011. How about you?

If you missed the video we’re discussing, don’t be left out and give it a watch below.

Quick Look Video: Arkon IPM-TAB1 Portable Tablet Stand. If You Have a Tablet, You Should Have One.

Arkon Tablet Stand IPM-TAB1

Our good friends over at Arkon sent us this cool little Portable Tablet Stand, the Arkon IPM-TAB1.  It’s advertised for the Samsung Galaxy Tab and iPAD, but as most tablet form factors are the same and the stand is fully adjustable, you could use it for almost any tablet available today.

If you’re not familiar with Arkon, they are one of the largest producers of mobile universal mounting solutions.  You may also want to check out some of the other Arkon products we’ve had the opportunity to review in the past.  You can find some of them for sale on the AndroidSPIN Accessory Store.

Who is Arkon?

Arkon Resources, Inc. (Arkon®), is a manufacturer and global supplier of car mounting solutions used with Portable GPS Navigation Devices, SmartPhones, Satellite Radios, Laptops and Notebooks, Netbooks, and other mobile communication and portable devices. Arkon’s customers include many of the world’s most recognized brand names in portable navigation and wireless mobile communication.

What is the Arkon IPM-TAB1:

Portable Fold-Up Stand for Samsung Galaxy Tab

  • For use in airplanes as a seat back tray table tablet computer or eBook stand
  • Extremely versatile accessory that can be used almost anywhere including at trade shows or the office, on the nightstand or kitchen counter, or for use with video chat (limited to those tablets having web cameras) or other applications
  • Support legs feature non-skid cushioned pads for added stability

I made a Quick Look video of the stand in action so you can see for yourself.  The stand is actually pretty nice and feels good and strong.  It’s not quite pocket worthy unless you have  really big pockets, but you could easily throw it in a bag to take with you.

So without further hesitation, check out the video below:

The bottom line is that if you have a tablet of any kind, you should have one of these on your desk or in your bag.  It’s light, flexible, and provides very sturdy support of your tablet computer.   When it’s folded up it’s like a long cigar taking up only 7″ x 1″ x 1″ and it weights a mere 2.9 oz.

You can purchase this neat little accessory for $17.95 +S&H  directly from Arkon or many times you can find them cheaper with a Quick Google Search around the local accessory stores.  It’s worth the money if you have a tablet and want an easy way to prop it up on your desk.  It will be an even better price when we give our review unit away to some lucky person.  Maybe one of you lucky tablet winners from the 2010 Holiday Triple Tablet Give-a-Way

If you have any other products you’d like us to review, don’t hesitate to leave us a comment and we’ll see what we can do.
