T-Mobile – The State of the Smartphone

T-Mobile delivers a few jabs and a big right hook to Verizon and AT&T. T-Mobile releases a few statistics and graphs from network tests in Atlanta and New York City.  Already having 4G available, T-Mobile completely decimates AT&T’s and Verizon’s current data speeds, which is no surprise. With AT&T having their IPhone and Verizon unleashing theirs, T-Mobile stays on top of their game letting you know they’re not only less expensive, and they’re also offering 4G right now. Although Verizon is coming out with 4G, as is AT&T, they do not offer it on their IPhones. T-Mobile’s data plans start at $10 with 4G as opposed to AT&T’s at $15 and Verizon’s at $29.99 which are only 3G.  Currently offering 3 Android devices that are 4G capable and having over 200,000,000+ customers that can  utilize their 4G network it’s clear T-Mobile is a very strong contender in this market.

More T-Mobile Spectrum Rumors

T-Mobile USA unit may be close to a deal to buy wireless spectrum from Clearwire, reports Business Week.

The sale of the spectrum could happen by the end of the first quarter, one of the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity. T-Mobile USA isn’t in a rush to buy spectrum and can demand a financially advantageous deal, which may happen in the near term, another person said.

T-Mobile, the fourth-largest mobile-phone operator in the U.S. after Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc. and Sprint Nextel, accounts for about a quarter of the German company’s sales. The company may fund the spectrum purchase with proceeds from the sale of its U.S. telecommunications towers, valued at $2 billion by analysts.

Clearwire has lots of spectrum available at 2.6 GHz. The company has some 120 MHz available in most urban areas but uses only about 30MHz for its currently operation WiMAX (4G) service (at 10 MHz per sector). Clearwire is also testing multi-mode service, in Phoenix, where it is offering plain vanilla WiMAX, while simultaneously testing FDD-LTE and TD-LTE service using both 10 Mhz and 20 Mhz channels.

In addition to the 80-90 MHz of 2.6 GHz (4G) spectrum at 2.6 GHz, satellite carriers like Lightspeed/Inmarsat (at 1.6 GHz) and Terrestar/ICO (at 2 GHz). Both may soon offer more than 20 MHz each of nationwide spectrum as an adjunct to their satellite backbone.

The FCC last month laid out a roadmap for satellite players to sell terrestrial-only devices using their satellite spectrum, reports industry analyst Tim Farrar. DISH Networks has agreed to acquire DBSD (ICO) for $1B. In conjunction with TerreStar, which is also valued at roughly $1B in its bankruptcy, this creates the opportunity for potential partners to consider using a rival 40MHz block of 2GHz MSS spectrum instead of investing in LightSquared or Clearwire.

DBSD and TerreStar (using 2 GHz) and Lightsquared and Inmarsat (using 1.6 GHz) are valuable not just because of their huge operational $250 million satellites, but because their spectrum can now be used terrestrially, via the Ancillary Terrestrial Component (ATC) rules of the FCC.

Still, T-Mobile USA strategy presentation (pdf) last month poured cold water on expectations that T-Mobile has a pressing need to acquire more spectrum. The company stated that it would not need additional spectrum until 2014.

T-Mobile Announces Vibrant 4G, Coming This Month

Well, it’s probably not the most popular decision, but Tmo and Samsung officially announced the Vibrant 4G. As expected, it’s more or less exactly like the original Vibrant, with Froyo, an HSPA+ radio, front-facing camera, and T-Mobile TV. There’s no official date or pricing, but we do know it’ll be available in February, so we expect to see it within the next few weeks. In the press release, Tmobile touts their 4G speeds until they can’t tout them anymore. Tmo also announced that they’ve launched HSPA+ in 8 new cities, including Chattanooga, TN, and Rochester, MN.

There’s not much to say on this one. It follows the whole Vibrant-Froyo fiasco from a few weeks ago. But since we first got word of this device, hell hath frozen over, as the original Vibrant got its precious Froyo. Anyone going to pick one of these up when it launches? Anyone going to buy one just to throw it on the ground and spit in Samsung’s face? Sound off in the comments! You can check out the full press release below.

In addition to teasing us with some three dimensional details of the T-Mobile G-Slate, that we HOPE will be shown off tomorrow, T-Mobile took a moment out of their day to remind us that the iPhone isn’t really that good. First of all, T-Mobile is expecting a February launch which is good to know if you’re shopping around for your selection. A few perks TMO just threw into the mix are HD TV through T-Mobile TV, a copy of INCEPTION pre-installed on your device, Video Chat by Qik, and data plans that start at $10/month.

The Galaxy S 4G is essentially an upgraded version of the Vibrant but for full details you’ll want to dig into the press release below:

The Plague Continues – T-Mobile Vibrant Owners Still Suffering

Samsung and T-Mobile seem to be on a roll lately. After making false promises for months of an update to Froyo, then finally releasing it only to find out that you have to use Samsung Kies mini to install the update, it turns out even Mac users still can’t update their devices without finding a Windows based PC. Now there are oodles of bugs that are plaguing the poor Vibrant owners that have managed to get updated. It has been a rough few weeks for the two companies.

A few of the bugs that are now being reported by Vibrant owners are as follows:

- Email notification notification sound disappearing on stock mail app
– Random vibrating
– MMS issues
– Apps mysteriously disappearing
– Wifi calling dropping calls randomly

What is so increasingly stressful about all these issues arising is the fact that they advised the delay in the update was for stability issues. Sounds to me like they never fixed them. Some of the issues and other questions are being addressed on the T-Mobile forums. If you are having any of the aforementioned issues or others, the forum is a good place to start. Otherwise I would, like I have in the past, recommend you give up on OEM and carrier updates and just root your phone. You will be so much happier.

T-Mobile and Samsung Offer Froyo Update KA6 to Vibrant Owners via Mini Kies

Galaxy S owners are all eagerly awaiting the Froyo update, and T-Mobile said they would be rolling the update out to their customers. However, a post in the T-Mobile forums indicates that this update won’t be going out over-the-air after all, but instead will be available by download via the Mini Kies tool. At this point, this is the only option for Vibrant owners wanting to update to Froyo, and they’re saying that the update won’t be OTA at any point down the road. That’s not to say that a later update might not be sent out that will include Froyo, but don’t expect to see KA6 being pushed out to your device.

Will LG’s T-Mobile G-Slate Have a 3D Display and Recording Capabilities?

The folks at Unwired View bring us word that LG’s upcoming G-Slate tablet for T-Mobile might, just might, not only have 3D display capabilities, but also 3D recording capabilities as well. They got this info from the good people at GPS&Co, who contacted LG France about it. According to an LG France spokesperson, they were quoted with the following specs:

  • Display size – 8.9 inch 3D display allowing to 3D content without glasses
  • 3D recording capability
  • LG Tegra 2 dual-core CPU
  • USB port and HDMI connector

If these specs turn out to be true, the G-Slate will be one impressive device. Unwired View also point to a story by Pocket Lint wherein they say LG plans to announce a “working 3D mobile screen device demo” soon, likely at the Mobile World Congress in three weeks. We will keep an eye on this story and bring you more as it develops.

Sprint and T-Mobile Speak Out About Froyo Updates for Galaxy S: Coming Soon

There was a rumor going ’round that the US-based Galaxy S phones weren’t going to see the Froyo update, and that it was a cost/political issue.   While we never really bought it here at Talkandroid, it was a popular rumor until a few days ago, when Phonescoop reported otherwise. We were pleased to hear that rumor was bogus, not only because it never really made sense, but because it would’ve been pretty underhanded of everyone involved. Well, today, both T-Mobile and Sprint have made statements regarding Froyo updates on their Galaxy S devices.

T-Mobile: Faster Phones Imminent

T-Mobile USA said today that HSPA+ versions of their Samsung Galaxy S 4G and T-Mobile’s Sidekick smartphones are “coming soon”. They will join T-Mobile’s tablets including the Dell Streak 7 and the T-Mobile G-Slate Android Honeycomb. A T-Mobile laptop stick developed by ZTE, capable of 42 Mbps, is slated to launch in the first half of 2011.

T-Mobile says it plans to double the speed of its HSPA+ network this year. The company vowed to aggressively expand and evolve its 4G smartphone portfolio, launching additional devices capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps in the first half of 2011, and smartphones capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps in the second half of the year.

T-Mobile’s Dell Streak 7, is expected to be available at T-Mobile stores across the country in the coming weeks. It features Android 2.2, a Tegra Dual Core processor, front and rear facing cameras and support for the 21 Mbps HSPA+ network for around $330.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4G, capable of delivering theoretical peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps, will be officially announced at the Mobile World Congress on Feb. 13. PC Magazine notes the current Galaxy S Android phones still haven’t received upgrades to Android 2.2, generating a lot of anger among owners of the Samsung Vibrant and other popular US Galaxy S phones.

The upgrade is coming tomorrow, according to T-Mobile CMO Cole Brodman. Like most updates, it will come in waves so not everyone will receive it on the first day.

T-Mobile: No Spectrum Deal…Yet

T-Mobile USA may sell nonstrategic assets such as its broadcast cellular towers in order to raise additional funds for capital spending, reports Reuters.

Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene Obermann said today that the No. 4 U.S. mobile service would only sell the assets if it needed additional capital beyond its typical spending requirements, and only if it got a good price.

Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene Obermann (above), said the company has 54MHz of spectrum in its core markets, which is sufficient for growth today. But the company will need more spectrum for growth in the future.

To help fund the purchase or partnership for more spectrum, Obermann said that T-Mobile USA will sell “non-core assets,” such as wireless towers. The “Reinvent” program is aimed to make additional gross savings of USD 1 billion by 2013.

The company would sell some 7,000 cellular towers — but only if it could get a good price.

“We’re definitely not in a rush,” he told reporters ahead of the company’s financial analyst meeting in New York, adding that a sale would depend on whether “the financials work out.”

T-Mobile USA hopes to grow revenue by USD $3 billion by 2014 under the “Grow” program. The company plans to offer competitive data plans in the top 100 U.S. markets. The company plans to go “big” with Android smartphones. “We estimate that 150 million Americans want smartphones,” said Philipp Humm, T-Mobile USA’s chief executive officer. He said T-Mobile USA is creating a $10 data plan for smartphones and will push to sell the devices below $100 apiece.

The company said LTE technology will be introduced once devices are readily available and once device quality is on par with the HSPA+ network, although that will probably not be for a few years.

There was no commitment to buy (or not buy) spectrum assets from Clearwire, which had been rumored.

Where will T-Mobile get spectrum for LTE? It’s still not clear (small “c”).

T-Mobile was coy about any spectrum partnership. If T-Mobile is lucky, Lightsquared might fall onto their lap. The downside would be dealing with the unique satellite/terrestrial frequencies and hand-off. Additionally, they’d probably have to build more towers, not sell them off. Clearwire LTE could use commercial, off the shelf gear…and share infrastructure costs. That seems a safer bet for T-Mobile.

From an engineering point of view, a Sprint/T-Mobile USA merger might create three, nearly equal, cellular operators in the United States…but result in a political ****storm.

T-Mobile Makes Its (4G) Move

T-Mobile’s slow build-out of its T-Mobile USA network, once a shortcoming, may be turning into an advantage for Europe’s largest phone company, says Bloomberg.

T-Mobile says their HSPA+ network now reaches 200 million people in 100 major metropolitan areas. It plans to double the speed of their HSPA network in 2011, to deliver peak speeds up to 42 Mbps.

Look at the chart — T-Mobile needs 40 MHz to be competitive with AT&T and Verizon.

T-Mobile currently provides HSPA+ on their AWS band. It’s far less expensive then the forklift upgrade that Verizon and AT&T made for LTE. AT&T and Verizon each invested nearly $10 billion just buying new spectrum on the 700 MHz band. Not to mention huge new infrastructure investments, nationwide.

What will T-Mobile do when it needs more spectrum? The number of U.S. smartphone users are expected to increase from 60.2 million in 2010 to 84.4 million in 2012. T-Mobile needs a Long-Term Evolution strategy.

According to Bloomberg, T-Mobile executives will unveil their strategy for the U.S. market in New York tomorrow.

Since 2008, T-Mobile has spent more than $9 billion to expand its 3G network. They paid over $4 billion in 2006 for their AWS frequencies. A forklift upgrade to LTE, on their current AWS band, would be problematic. There isn’t enough room to operate both.

Where are they going to get more spectrum?

T-Mobile’s options include LightSquared (at 1.7 GHz) and Clearwire (at 2.6 GHz), says Bloomberg.

Lightsquared is currently in trouble, with GPS interference issues, the odd frequency, lack of infrastructure and lack of money.

Clearwire, on the other hand, has backhaul and towers in place. Their 2.6 GHz band is globally standardized for LTE, enabling more cost/effective handsets. Infrastructure is available off the shelf. The disadvantage of 2.6GHz is the higher frequency doesn’t penetrate well indoors. Both companies need money and could cut a good deal for T-Mobile

But there is another option — buy more AWS spectrum. SpectrumCo has 19 MHz available and they’re not using it. T-Mobile USA is currently the largest user of AWS frequencies in the United States. The AWS band uses 1710 to 1755 MHz, and 2110 to 2155 MHz.

Under the name of SpectrumCo, cable operators collectively bought $2.5 billion in AWS spectrum back in 2006. At the time, cable operators planned to roll out cellular phone service, nationwide.

SpectrumCo, the AWS bidding consortium with Cox, Comcast and Time Warner Cable, picked up 137 licenses in 2006’s Advanced Wireless Services auction (at 1.7/2.1 GHz). SpectrumCo won a total of 137 AWS licenses for $2.37 billion. Comcast’s share was $1.29 billion, followed by Time Warner Cable’s $632.2 million, and Cox’s $248.3 million. (See SpectrumCo Gets Licenses). Cox paid $248.3 million for AWS licenses in 2006, and transfered those licenses out of SpectrumCo and directly to Cox.

The cable-based, nation-wide AWS phone network didn’t happen.

Instead, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Brighthouse invested in Clearwire. Comcast put more than $1 Billion into Clearwire while TWC put in $550 billion. Meanwhile the AWS spectrum that cable operaters bought is unused.

Now that the FCC has authorized the NBC/Comcast merger (pdf), an agreement to sell their spectrum might be timely. It doesn’t seems likely, however. T-Mobile would likely get a better spectrum deal from Clearwire (who needs money), then from cable operators (who don’t).

On the other hand, T-Mobile could be bold. As a majority partner in Lightsquared, they could start with a fresh slate. The satellite/terrestrial approach of Lightsquared has a unique appeal – enabling a new vision of global communications.

Meanwhile, cable operators will likely to sit on their AWS spectrum. Spectrum scarcity will just push rates higher. That’s good for Comcast and NBC.

T-Mobile: Three to Go – Fast

T-Mobile has posted a page for its upcoming G-Slate tablet. It will run Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb and run on the carrier’s HSPA+ network, which currently has top speeds of about 21Mbps, although T-Mobile plans to step up to 42 Mbps in the future.

LG’s G-Slate may have the same screen size and resolution as Verizon’s Motorola Xoom (10 inches, 1280 x 800 pixels), which would make it a direct iPad competitor.

T-Mobile’s faster HSPA+ network is also expected to work with T-Mobile’s new Samsung Vibrant 4G, a variant of Samsung’s Galaxy S line, running Android 2.2, and powered by a 1 GHz processor, as well as the Dell Streak 7 tablet (below), an Android 2.2 device running a Tegra2 processor.

LG V900 Passes Through FCC, Most Likely The T-Mobile G-Slate (Video)

The FCC has just passed a device for LG that looks promising for T-Mobile customers.  Per the FCC report, the device is dubbed the LG V900.  It’s a tablet based device and most likely headed to Magenta soon, possibly as early as March.  How do we know?  The biggest give away for a device when trying to decipher what carrier will pick it up, is usually the bands it operates on.  Well, this bad boy was approved for the AWS spectrum, which T-Mobile in the US currently supports. And thanks to CES last week we knew that T-Mobile was picking up a couple of new tablets.  Hit the break for more device info, FCC pics and to check out the videos touting Honeycomb 3.0 on the G-Slate. MicBeast over at XDA has filed a class action lawsuit again T-Mobile and Samsung regarding the current rumors of Samsung withholding the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update for the Galaxy S line of devices. MicBeast has currently hired Edelson McGuire to represent the case. We here at AndroidSPIN are still flabbergasted at the tip we had received from an anonymous source claiming to work internally at T-Mobile. As we stated in our previous post although we cannot validate nor deny the alleged rumor, we felt it was necessary to bring it to the fore front. Check out the excerpt from MicBeast below.

they have continuously lied to us about the hardware,
and software reliability of this phone,
they promised us updates (to 2.2! Not the functionally dead JI6 2.1!)
over and over,
NOW they plan to release NEW galaxies
without updating the old ones they currently have
The GPS is clearly a hardware defect.
There are just too many issues with this phone
and the Customer service reps have been combative
even bullying and threatening customers!

a clear violation of US law

We can only hope that this alleged rumor will help fix some of the corruption of whom ever holds these updates hostage, and gives the updates in which the consumers deserve.

What do you think about all these alleged rumors and the lawsuit? Let us know in the comments below.

T-Mobile: LTE in the Future?

T-Mobile USA subleases their spectrum to a mobile virtual operator called Simple Mobile. Now Simple Mobile is offering HSPA+ data service. Whether their HSPA+ network is considered a “4G” network may depend on how much credence you give to T-Mobile’s claims of 42Mbps. Still, T-Mobile is likely the fastest 3G network, no matter what your politics.

Simple Mobile announced their MVNO deal with T-Mobile last March. The company offers voice and data plans from $40 to $60. For $60, Simple Mobile offers Unlimited Talk, Text and Data, making Simple Mobile the only nationwide GSM service provider offering unlimited everything at that price. Sprint has a competing Simply Everything service for $60 using their CDMA network (excluding Clear’s WiMAX support).

Simple Mobile does not sell phones. The company provides provisioned SIM cards that users can insert into unlocked GSM phones. Thus, only phones that support T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network technology would qualify as supporting 4G speeds, explains Fierce Wireless.

T-Mobile says their HSPA+ network now reaches 200 million people in 100 major metropolitan areas. It plans to double the speed of their HSPA network in 2011, to deliver peak speeds up to 42 Mbps.

T-Mobile’s provides HSPA+ on their AWS band. It’s far less expensive then the forklift upgrade that Verizon and AT&T made for LTE. AT&T and Verizon each invested nearly $10 billion just buying new spectrum on the 700 MHz band. Not to mention huge new infrastructure investments, nationwide.

But what can T-Mobile fall back to? They got nothin’. MVDOs like Simple Mobile are stuck. No spectrum for you. No LTE.

Clear’s 2.6 GHz spectrum does make sense. Clear has backhaul and towers in place. Spectrum on 2.6 GHz is available and it’s relatively cheap. It’s also compatible with other carriers worldwide. It’s just a matter of price. Too bad for WiMAX. I think it delivers more bang for the buck.

Money talks. Perhaps that’s why Craig McCaw resigned from Clearwire’s board. I’m guessing lightning will strike at Mobile World Congress next month. On Clearwire.

Even On Verizon T-Mobile Still Bashes The iPhone

T-Mobile has wasted no time in its continuation of products that attack the iphone, whether on AT&T or on Verizon.  In a very recent commercial, T-Mobile, the #4 carrier in the US takes on Verizon, the #1 carrier as it has recently added the Apple iPhone 4 to its arsenal.  The commercial focuses on the fact that neither of the carriers offer 4G radios in the device, therefore never achieving 4G speeds and thus not being true 4G.  It’s difficult for me to use the words “true 4G” and not chuckle as I write this.  In any event, it’s apparent that T-Mobile is definitely trying to get across that it’s not playing games when it comes to 4G.  T-Mobile is looking to expand their HSPA+ network by bringing customers somewhere in the vicinity of 42 mb/s by years end.  AT&T is still only offering HSPA+ technology (14.4 mb/s) at this time and although Verizon does offer an LTE network and several devices that are compatible with it, the iPhone 4 is not one of them.  Enjoy the video, and don’t forget to let us know what you think in the comments below.

Samsung GT-i9023 for T-Mobile Hits the FCC – A Nexus S With a New Color? HSPA+?

This image has no alt text

Hey there, oval-shaped Samsung phone with nary a name or image to go along with your sexy model number and T-Mobile radios. It’s the Samsung GT-i9023 hitting the FCC this time, and some folks are saying its outlines match up almost exactly with the Nexus S’s. Alternate color? Possible, but it’s unlikely that’d be the only change here.

Other theories include this being a Nexus S with 4G radios, but that’s more wishful thinking right now. There is the Vibrant 4G, of course, but those with good eyes are saying this FCC outline looks too rounded at the corners to be that phone. I’m stumped.

Don’t forget we have yet to get to Barcelona for Mobile World Congress where Samsung will be announcing some exciting new products. I love the guessing game, but I’d rather much wait until then. (Or until some tasty spy shots of this thing land into our inbox.) [via Engadget]
