Updated Pie Chart on Android Developers Shows Gingerbread Growth, Honeycomb Struggling

That’s a lot of Froyo! The official Android OS version breakdown has been updated. While Froyo still continues to be the dominating version of Android with 59.4% of the pie, there are a few other interesting points that can be taken from this chart.

First of all, Gingerbread is growing. Looking back at March, Gingerbread only accounted for a measly 1% of the entire Android family of OS’, whereas now, it has 18.6%. We can only expect this number to grow, much like Froyo did late last year, with carriers and manufacturers pushing out new devices with 2.3 or updating current devices to 2.3. We should hopefully see 2.3 and 2.2 even out as the year progresses, as well as 2.1 disintegrate.

The saddening conclusion that can be taken from this chart is that Honeycomb is failing to sell. Back in March, with only the XOOM out, it barely made a presence with only 0.2%. Now, with quite a few Honeycomb tablets out, it still has just under 1% of the Android OS family. Hopefully, Android 3.2 will spark more interesting in Honeycomb.

Facebook Now Updated To 1.6 In The Android Market – New Features

This image has no alt text

The always hit-or-miss Facebook app for Android has been updated in the Android Market this time bringing yet another new set of features. Why these features were ever left out of the app in the first place is another topic for another time. New for this update: improved stalking with access to pages, video uploading (’bout time) and miscellaneous improvements to the news/friend feed. Now, if you’ll excuse me. I have some creepin’ to do..

Feel like trollin’ my Facebook? Hit me up here and add me as a friend!

Facebook for Android Gets Updated to 1.6, Adds Video Upload and Pages

Check your Market now, because Facebook for Android just got an update! It is not necessarily a huge one but it does improve and bring a couple of features to the mobile app: Improved News Feed, Pages Support, and Video Upload.

The News Feed has been improved in a sense that it will load more types of posts and open the posts natively in the app. Pages is also supported…sort of. You may now click on a Page that appears in your News Feed and browse the Page within the app. That is cool and all, but there is no way to quickly search for a Page. You must find it in your News Feed. This is a bit of a downer, especially since iOS’ Facebook app has had this feature for ages. Finally, and likely the biggest feature added to the Facebook for Android app,  is video upload! We can now (finally) upload videos taken from our devices directly to Facebook while staying in the app.

Go give the update a spin, and let us know what you think! It seems as if the app is not showing up in the Market for tablet owners. If you own a XOOM, a shiny new Galaxy Tab 10.1, or any other Android tablet, PLEASE let us know if you can update, or even see the app.

Web Version of Android Market Updated with More Detailed Rating Breakdown

This image has no alt text

The rating system for the Android Market is its single greatest strength and also, its greatest weakness. Most of the time you’re relying on ratings of the illiterate and uninformed to see if and app is worthy to download. “Y THIS APP NO WORK FOR RAZR!?!? 1 STAR 4 U!” (sigh)

Well, our good friends over at AndroidPolice discovered today that the web version of the Android Market has slightly upgraded their ratings system to show a nifty little breakdown chart of an app’s ratings by star (not unlike Amazon.com). Still missing is a view of comments based on star rating but maybe they’ll add that at a later time. So jump on the Android Market from your web browser to check it out!

Ovi Store gets updated to 2.08 with app update notifications

Ovi Store gets updated to 2.08 with app update notificationsI read about the Ovi Store version 2.08 update on All About Symbian and fired up my Nokia N8 to see that the update had arrived. After signing in to the Ovi Store I saw that there was one application update available for my device, as shown in the screenshot to the right.

Getting application update notices is essential in today’s mobile world so I am happy to see it finally come to Nokia’s Symbian line. According to the guys at AAS, here is what is improved in the new Ovi Store client:

  • Users are able to review and apply updates to apps they’ve downloaded from the Ovi Store. The server now sends version numbers automatically down to the client on the phone.
  • Nokia’s algorithm for delivering ‘Top Free’ and ‘Best Sellers’ has been tweaked, to “make app and game listings more relevant for consumers”. Internal rankings are now filtered better by device and region, so that popularity in one niche won’t skew the whole.
  • Finding relevant apps has been made easier, with the addition of a “users who downloaded x also downloaded y” system.
  • Localization of S60 clients to Arabic Store clients for S60 5th Edition and S60 3rd Edition.

My new Nokia E7 also received the update the first time I launched the Ovi Store on it. I also fired up my Nokia Astound to check for the Ovi Store update and found it too had the update available so now all three of my newer Symbian devices are running the latest Ovi Store client!

Netflix for Android Updated with Support for New Devices Including Original Droid, Blocks Access for Rooted Users?

This image has no alt text

Netflix has just launched an update to their Android app coinciding with the launch of the LG Revolution for Verizon. The Revolution ships with the movie streaming service pre-installed, but it isn’t the only Verizon handset gaining support for the app. The original Motorola Droid and the Casio G’zOne Commando have been added to the list of supported devices, adding to a handful of HTC and Samsung handsets already prepped for instant access to Netflix video.

While we haven’t been able to confirm, we have been receiving reports that this update might also come with a very big downside. Netflix might be jumping on board with Google Movies and Blockbuster, blocking rooted devices from accessing video streams. One user with a rooted HTC Incredible — one of the first handsets to gain Netlix support — received the following error message after launching the update:

It looks like Netflix has been deactivated on this device. It could be an issue with your account or perhaps your device was deactivated on netflix.com

After checking on his desktop, the same user verified that his Netflix account was still in working order, leaving us to believe something may, in fact, be going on. We must stress again that this is unverified information, but we felt it worth mentioning. Any other rooted users out there losing access to Netflix once updating their app? Let us know in the comments below.

[Thanks, romma, Neil, and JDog for sending this through!]

Twitter for BlackBerry updated to version 1.0.1.12

Twitter for BlackBerry

Twitter for BlackBerry has received a small update today. The official app from RIM now sits at version 1.0.1.12. There is no official change log and I haven’t really noticed anything new, so if you come across something drop a comment and let us know. There is still a bit of tweaking to be done to get things up to everyone’s standards (ie. not saving your place in the timeline when you exit and lower refresh times) but it’s still my client of choice. If you’re looking to snag the new version, you can grab it from blackberry.com/twitter or in BlackBerry App World.

Bubble Birds updated – Now with free version!

Just over a week ago, we posted on a new game from XIMAD called Bubble Birds Premium. The game is similar to your classic bubble popping game, but with birds and in bright colors. You simply match 3 or more of the same colored birds together to pop them off the playing area. We just got word that the game is now available in a free version. The free version does contain ads, but they don’t seem to be too annoying or intrusive, and hey, its FREE. Oveall the game is a great time waster, and quite addictive. You can pick it up for most devices running OS 4.6 and up.

Twitter for Android Updated, Brings New Look, Universal Search

We told you earlier today about Twitter for Android, version 2.0. Well, said release is now available. The new Twitter for Android brings a few new features, such as:

  • You can now use Twitter without signing in. For example, a user can see trends, browse interests, and even see suggested users in different categories.
  • The UI has gotten some changes as well. There’s now a bar at the top, where users can see tweets, mentions, direct messages, and lists.
  • In addition, the user can now see retweets in their mentions column.
  • Universal search is also introduced in this version
  • Finally, users can now scan through their address book and see which of their friends (that are “discoverable”) are on Twitter

I, for one, havent gotten the opportunity to check out the new version, but judging from the screenshots on Twitter’s blog, and the features listed above, it sounds pretty awesome. Anyone installed the updated version of Twitter for Android yet? Give us your thoughts in the comments below!

Angry Birds Gets Updated Today, Adds 30 New Levels And Wants Access To Your SMS?

Today, Rovio Mobile Limited announced that they have released a new additions to Angry Birds, and no, it’s not the anticipated Angry Birds Seasons Valentine edition.  It’s a completely different update, adding 30 new levels in a whole new western themed world called “Ham ‘Em High”.  There are a few new bonus items and they’ve even added a graphics toggle for lower end devices, eliminating the needs for Angry Birds lite.  The only other thing worth noting in this edition is in the permissions.  Looks like Rovio wants access to your SMS capabilities.  Now, what on earth can that be for?  Take a peak for yourself and note the other additions.  Only time will tell what Rovio has up their sleeves.  Rovio is definitely keeping busy these days as they are also working on the release of their Angry Birds Rio edition.  Hit the break for the permissions list and to check out some more screen shots.  Don’t forget to head on over to our apps database if you’re an Angry Birds newbie. Pulse Reader Gets Updated for Honeycomb

The hugely popular Pulse RSS Reader that is on both Android and iOS devices had the honor of being showcased during the Honeycomb press conference yesterday.  The presentation showed an updated UI that takes full advantage of all the new developer toys that are being included in the latest build of our favorite mobile OS.

Check out the full press release after the break.  If you have not downloaded Pulse, I highly recommend it!Full Press Release

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA – FEB 2, 2010 – Alphonso Labs, creators of the
hugely popular Pulse News app, showcased its brand new Android Tablet app
at the Honeycomb launch event at Google Headquarters. Alphonso Labs has
worked closely with Google over the last few weeks to customize their Pulse
News application and take full advantage of the Honeycomb platform.
Pulse, currently available on iPad, iPhone and Android phones, will expand its
cross-platform reach by launching the Android tablet app later this month. There
are a lot of new and exciting features in Honeycomb. Here’s a developer’s
perspective on how Pulse is leveraging the Honeycomb platform to enhance the
news reading experience on Android Tablets.

Activity Fragments
Honeycomb allows developers to break the Activities of their applications into
sub-components called Fragments, and then combine them in a variety of ways
to create a richer, more interactive experience. For the landscape view, Pulse
allows you to open the story right there in a new fragment. This allows readers
to simultaneously browse and read news stories.

Home Screen Widgets
Honeycomb lets developers take home screen widgets to the next level, offering
more types of content and new modes of interaction with users. Pulse has
incorporated some of these new widgets in its Android tablet app. What you see
below is a 3D stack of articles from a particular source, which you can flick up or
down to change stories. You can also click on a story you like, and go right into
the app. Interactive widgets will change the way you interact with the Android
ecosystem.

New Animation Framework & Hardware Accelerated Graphics
Honeycomb gives a performance boost to many graphics operations for
applications running in the Android framework. Pulse runs blazingly fast on
Honeycomb – the fluidity of the interactions is especially noticeable.
Richer Notifications
Honeycomb extends notifications by letting developers include richer content in
them. Pulse can now show you news stories, including image and headlines in
these notifications, keeping you up to date.

The Pulse News App is available on the App Store and Android Market. Users
can download the app at www.pulsene.ws or www.alphonsolabs.com

Revamped Readability Rewards Writers [Updated]

The new Readability pays the sites you read

Readability, a browser tool which isolates the text on a webpage making it easier to read, has announced it’s moving beyond its humble beginnings to become a “full-fledged reading platform.” Readability will now offer iOS apps and, more importantly, it’s no longer a free tool.

The new Readability will cost you a minimum of $5 a month, with 70 percent of that fee going directly to the writers and publishers whose sites you visit.

Readability and similar tools, like Apple’s Safari 5 web browser have been criticized for cutting into publishers’ bottom line by eliminating online advertisements. The new non-free Readability is at least in part a way to address this concern. As readers, most people want a clean, distraction-free reading experience. At the same time no one wants to deprive their favorite websites of the income necessary to keep the site going. Readability’s new pricing plan is an attempt to find some common ground and keep everyone happy.

Not only does the new Readability give readers an option to hide ads and view a more readable page (which they may well be doing anyway), it provides a new source of income for the site. Even better, that additional revenue comes from the actual content, rather than simply the ads surrounding the content.

Ironically, in testing the new Readability, I realized that most sites I read regularly already have clean designs, nice typography and uncluttered layouts — sites that don’t really need Readability. But the new payment system can help those sites too. Readability’s payment system turns the service into something more than just a reformatting tool — it’s a bit like a roving micropayments system, handing out money to sites you enjoy.

Here’s how it works: The minimum fee is $5 a month, though Readability encourages you to spend more if you can afford it. The money is then split up between articles where you use Readability. Visit only one site and it will get all of your money; visit several dozen and each will see only a few pennies unless you up your monthly payment. You can use the Readability web interface to see where your money is going. It’s like micropayments, but all the transaction details are handled behind the scenes by Readability.

Of course you aren’t just paying the writers and publishers. Thirty percent of your monthly fee money goes to Readability, which has some new browser extensions, web badges, an API and some nice looking (though as-yet-unapproved) iOS apps built around the popular Instapaper.

The Instapaper contribution means that in addition to the “Read Now” button, which gives you a more readable version of the current article, there’s also a new “Read Later” button. Read Later works just like it does in Instapaper, saving the article to your account for when you have more time to read. Unfortunately, right now there’s no way to actually integrate your Instapaper account with Readability.

The “Read Now” and “Read Later” buttons can come from either the Readability browser extension, bookmarklet or from the site itself using a new embedded button (there’s also an API for more sophisticated integration).

Despite the integration tools and new payment system, it’s unlikely most sites will ever get rich from Readability. Of course it’s unlikely most sites are making much from Google Ads either, and it certainly never hurts to have another form of income, even if it is measured in pennies.

[Update: For those worried that Readability is no longer free at all, we should note that you can keep using the bookmarklets and browser extensions without paying for the service.]

Facebook for Android updated to v1.5.1, ‘Deals’ feature included

Facebook has pushed out an update to v1.5.1, which brings these changes to the app:

  • Added deals – get access to savings, free offers and special deals from nearby businesses
  • Added chat – now you can chat with your Facebook friends right from your Android device
  • Push notifications (only supported for devices on Android 2.2+)
  • Various bug fixes

These seem like the standard fixes but one thing jumps out at us: Deals? What are those?

From the looks of it, Deals is a new Facebook feature that allows the user to check in to places and possibly receive digital coupons and deals from businesses and restaurants. Sounds very Foursquare-esque to me.

Although I’m not too sure how to access Deals at this point, it sounds like a very promising feature for Facebook for Android.

Let us know what you think of the new Facebook features in the comments!

Breaking: Port Your Number to Google Voice – UPDATED

Google Voice Number Porting Now Available

Just noticed over on Engadget that Google is now offering the ability to port your existing phone number to Google Voice. It looks like Twitter user @QQforU is the one to thank for catching it. There will be a $20 charge, payable through Google Checkout and, of course, ETFs still apply. So, don’t jump the gun and inadvertently cancel your contract!

I just checked on my own account, and it is indeed available. Just hit up this page, follow the steps, and you’re ready to break the ties that bind!

Update: Aaaaand it’s gone. Apparently Google is just testing the feature. Google passed this note on to Engadget to explain what’s up:

“We’re continually testing new features to enhance the user experience. For a limited amount of time, we’re making the Google Voice number porting process available to users. We don’t have any additional details to share at this time, but plan to offer this feature to all users in the near future.”

Google Maps for BlackBerry updated to v4.5.2

Google Maps v4.5.2

One of my personal favorite and most used apps for BlackBerry, Google Maps, just got an update to v4.5.2.  We aren’t seeing a changelog posted so our guess is that this is just a bug squishing release. The previous version was 4.5.1 which we saw released back in October of last year. If you notice any significant changes drop a comment below, or discuss your findings in the forums! To download the update head over to m.google.com/maps on your BlackBerry. Thanks to everyone that sent this in!
