Health Updates sent to your Android device in Real Time

Health Monitoring on Android

The future is getting very close to us. I remember watching old Star Trek TV episodes, you know, the ones where they simply scan a handheld device over someone’s body to see if anything is wrong with them, or where the injury may be. You’ve seen it too, fact is, we see it everywhere we turn in today’s world. The technology that was pictured to be “futuristic” is starting to pop up in our daily lives now.

Here we see Dutch researchers have found a way to connect a wireless receiver into an SD slot of an Android device to receive wireless data from a Body Area Network (BAN). The data streams in real time from sensors attached to the body and sends it directly to the phone. The network streams over the nRF24L01+ radio wireless standard instead of a bluetooth connection standard.

If you use Android on the go, chances are you’ve used Car Home on your device. Over at Google Mobile Blog, there has been an announcement that there’s been some great changes to Google’s app.

Nokia Updates Qt SDK to Version 4.7

Nokia Updates Qt SDK to Version 4.7
Nokia has updated the Qt software developer kit to version 4.7, and adds a number of new features for developers. The biggest new feature of the SDK is that it makes developing animated, touch-based interfaces and applications possible from Qt. This is possible through QML (Qt Meta-Object-Language), which closely resembles what it would be like to develop in JavaScript. Qt 4.7 also lets …

Adobe Updates Flash For Android; AIR Coming October 8th?

This image has no alt text

That security hole that no one got fidgety over has been patched up by Adobe today. You can find the now-should-be-more-secure version in the Android market as version 10.1.95.1. There’s really no changelog to be had as this is only a quick fix for that critical flaw. Some other bit of news might have squeaked out of Adobe’s camp, however, and it concerns AIR for Android. According to a tip by one of AC’s forum members, Adobe AIR will be out October 8th in the Android market for users to download.

adobe-air-logo-600x316

The email seems to have been sent to a developer as they’re letting AIR developers know in advance in order to ensure proper testing against their latest, near-final build. After they’ve finalized AIR and pushed it to the Android market, developers will be given the green light on uploading their cross-platform wonders. I sure can’t wait, can you?

AppBrain Updates, Now Even More Ways to Find the App You Want

I admit, every time AppBrain rolls out a new feature I think they can’t possibly make finding apps any better, and then then they add some feature to prove me wrong and say “Wow!” all over again. In addition to overhauling the UI, AppBrain has integrated anonymous aggregated user statistics into search options to add even more ways to find that particular app that makes your life better.

For instance, you can now look for apps from the tools category that are popular among the youngest users of AppBrain, and find a Drivers Ed app. Or find out that there’s three Hello Kitty themes in the top 10 popular themes among women.
We also made it much easier to find apps that are interesting to people from a specific country. I was happy to now easily find the “Albert Heijn” application from the list of apps most used in the Netherlands, where I’m from. The 15 countries we currently provide most-used lists for are the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Australia, the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, Hong Kong, Brazil, France, Canada, Spain, and Portugal. Other countries unfortunately don’t have enough users on AppBrain to provide a ranking, but we will add more countries as soon as more people join!

If you’re never visited AppBrain before, it’s definitely worth checking out. In addition to tons of search options, every app has a QR code for easy scanning, or you can sync your phone with AppBrain for even easier downloads right to your phone.

If  you remember, a few months ago TD Bank brought their mobile banking app to the Android Market. The bad news however, was that the app was only available on the Canadian Market; TD Bank customers living in the United States were out of luck.

Samsung officially announces GPS updates for September

Yesterday we reported that a Samsung employee tweeted about optimization software being tested to solve the infamous Galaxy S navigation woes.  Well, Samsung decided they needed to be (slightly) more official about it, and answered with a tweet from the official Samsung Twitter account.

The current state of GPS on the Galaxy S is bleak, with things like navigation and Google Maps rendered essentially useless indoors or in dense, urban areas.  So for all you Galaxy S owners, help is on the way, albeit slowly.

PayPal updates Android app, brings some great features

You would be hard pressed nowadays to find someone who hasn’t used PayPal, and most of those people continue using it on a regular basis.

Yesterday, PayPal released an update to their app for the Android platform that really bumps it up from it’s previous standings. No longer will the app only send money (in a… how would we say… non-pretty interface), new features now include:

  • Bump support: Bump is an app that lets two users swap contact info by fist-bumping their smartphones together.
  • Split the Check: You and your friends go out and spend a ton of money on a meal, and the restraunt only allows one credit card? That’s okay, because with this new feature, you can tally up the total, divide by number of cheapska- er, people who didn’t pay, and sends out a payment request to their PayPal accounts. Simple!

You can bet that you’ll be seeing more and more features on PayPal’s mobile platform, as reports from the company indicate they saw more money come and go through their service in the first half of 2010 than all of 2009 combined.

To download the update, open up the market and go to your downloads, or, for those who don’t have the app at all, simply search “PayPal” in the Android market.

Three UK updates status on HTC Desire upgrade to Froyo

If you’ll recall, yesterday, we reported on Three’s statement to the public on the upgrade status for their HTC Hero phones for 2.1. According to the statement, their end of the development was complete, and they were simply waiting for the go-ahead from Google. Well, now it seems that they’re giving us an update on their plans for the HTC Desire as well, but this time it’s for the Froyo update.

According to the statement:

Although the HTC Desire update was released for unlocked phones last week, HTC are building a specific version for Three which will take them a few weeks. Once we have this version it will be tested, approved by Google and then rolled out to customers. Although it goes without saying that we will get the update to customers ASAP, it’s likely to be towards the end of summer until we can guarantee a problem free version for our customers.

In other words, it looks like some relatively major testing on the new OS is going on now, and hopefully we’ll see an update for the Desire around September.

Updates for HTC Desires on Orange should take about 4 weeks

According to the twitter account of a PR spokesman for Orange, consumers on their network using HTC Desires will have the update to Froyo in about 4 weeks. The exact quote from his tweet says:

We are working with HTC to bring the 2.2 Android update to Desire customers as soon as we can. This process normally takes about four weeks

It is probably best (for the company) that consumers aren’t given an exact date for the upcoming release, as Android devices are notorious for having updates pushed back beyond release dates.

What do our readers on Orange think about this? Be sure to let us know in the comments!
