This image has no alt text

That’s right. We reported on Friday that Droid Incredible 2 users would be getting their taste of Gingerbread sometime this week and according to our Phantips, some lucky users are able to pull their OTA update.

To check if Gingerbread is ready for your Incredible 2, simply jump into your phone’s Settings and go to System Updates then Check New. You should then be prompted to download 116MB Gingerbread update and install. As always, make sure your battery has a full charge before attempted the update and if you want to be really safe, backup your apps and sync before updating.

Let us know in the comments if you’ve received the update!

Thanks, Jon!

Samsung Galaxy Tab Gingerbread Update Begins Rolling Out to Sprint Users

This image has no alt text

The original Samsung Galaxy Tab might not have the hardware to stack up against the newly released Galaxy Tab 10.1, but thanks to an update rolling out today at least one carrier-branded version of the 7-inch slate will get a fresher build of Android that might restore some of its appeal. It isn’t the tablet-specific Honeycomb, but the Android 2.3 update should breath some new life into Samsung’s first Android tablet.

Maintenance release EF17 is now going out to Sprint users, with the update expected to reach all owners of their Galaxy Tab within four days. Anyone out there receive their piece of Gingerbread yet?

Cortado Flight Mode allows users to download emails prior to turning off data connections

Cortado Flight Mode

Ever been sitting on the plane mid-flight when you decided to pull out your BlackBerry and catch up on reading some emails, only to realize that half of them have not fully downloaded, and with no data connection you can’t fetch the rest? Don’t worry, you aren’t alone. It happens to a lot of people, as we never really think about it because generally we have a data connection and we can download the extra. Luckily the folks at Cortado have created a simple way to solve this issue.

Cortado Flight Mode is a great application that allows users to switch their device to Flight Mode by turning off all wireless connections, but it is delayed by a user defined interval (set standard to 60 seconds) allowing recent mail to continue to pull from the server and store on your device. By pulling the mail from the server, users will no longer be stuck with only part of the email on their device wishing they could read the rest, instead they will have the contents of the email, but attachments will not automatically be downloaded. Fear not, if you are a heavy email user, you can set it to only pull contents of emails from the last 24 hours, or light users can remove that cap and have it set to pull all of them. Upon landing, simply launch the application again and it will re-establish your connections for you and you are good to go. For only $ 1.99 this is a great application for those e-mail hungry, travel happy individuals.

Angry EVO 3D Users: HTC Is Diligently Working On Unlocked Bootloader Update

This image has no alt text

Say what you will about the Android community, but when it comes to some users, they sure like to whine. Take these new Evo 3D and Sensation users who, once again, took to HTC’s Facebook page demanding and making all kinds of threats for HTC to make good on their “unlocked bootloader promise.” What really irks me is that these people haven’t even had their device for more than a few days and rather than celebrate, they’re ready to make good on their 30 day return window.

Rather than keep quiet, HTC actually provided a response to one lucky Facebook user stating,

We are diligently working to ensure that we do this right. When everything is finalized, we will make an announcement on Facebook. Thanks for your patience.

I should note that HTC never specifically mentioned anything about the Sensation and Evo 3D in their unlocked bootloader “future device” plans. Both these devices were pretty much all shipped and ready for retailers once the announcement was made and would have cause a huge delay (and further uproar) for both these devices if sent back for unlocking. But I suppose some people are never happy and no matter what, always feel entitled to things. Keep in mind, although the unlocking process seems easy enough, I’m sure there is a chain of command that most likely involves running all the in’s and out’s of the update by the carriers first. Also, I would much rather HTC focus on prompt OTA’s involving better battery life and bug fixes for the time being.

But while the rest of the world is complaining, I will continue to wait patiently for the update all the while enjoying and showing off my new Evo 3D to the world. Take your time HTC, work on bug fixes and I appreciate your new stance towards unlocked bootloaders. For the time being, the fact that you’re working on it, is good enough for me.

Netflix for Android Updated with Support for New Devices Including Original Droid, Blocks Access for Rooted Users?

This image has no alt text

Netflix has just launched an update to their Android app coinciding with the launch of the LG Revolution for Verizon. The Revolution ships with the movie streaming service pre-installed, but it isn’t the only Verizon handset gaining support for the app. The original Motorola Droid and the Casio G’zOne Commando have been added to the list of supported devices, adding to a handful of HTC and Samsung handsets already prepped for instant access to Netflix video.

While we haven’t been able to confirm, we have been receiving reports that this update might also come with a very big downside. Netflix might be jumping on board with Google Movies and Blockbuster, blocking rooted devices from accessing video streams. One user with a rooted HTC Incredible — one of the first handsets to gain Netlix support — received the following error message after launching the update:

It looks like Netflix has been deactivated on this device. It could be an issue with your account or perhaps your device was deactivated on netflix.com

After checking on his desktop, the same user verified that his Netflix account was still in working order, leaving us to believe something may, in fact, be going on. We must stress again that this is unverified information, but we felt it worth mentioning. Any other rooted users out there losing access to Netflix once updating their app? Let us know in the comments below.

[Thanks, romma, Neil, and JDog for sending this through!]

Fear Not, T-Mobile G2 Users: Gingerbread’s A-Comin’ This Quarter

This image has no alt text

The T-Mobile G2 has been out for quite some time. Given the nature of the software T-Mobile decided to put on it – stock Android 2.2 – we figured it’d be one of the first devices after the Nexus line to get Android 2.3. Time came and went without an update nor a peep about its status, unfortunately, but it seems G2 owners will be experiencing a case of “good things come to those who wait”.

ComputerWorld has confirmed via an HTC rep that the phone will indeed be getting Android 2.3. It’s said that it’ll be out by the beginning of summer, so you can expect it to land this quarter. (Pending any unfortunate delays, of course.) Let’s hope it gets here sooner rather than later.

Special YouTube App Allows LG Optimus 3D Users To Share 3D Videos

On Monday, LG announced that it will be partnering with the Google owned YouTube to utilize a special version of its application that will allow Optimus 3D users to share their 3D content with others online.  The application, which will come preloaded on the device, will allow Optimus 3D users to record their videos and then upload them to a YouTube 3D channel that they can share with friends and family.  It’s no surprise that LG would push for partnerships like this, as it will prove to be vital as a means to share that 3D content with others who may not have a 3D enabled device.  The only downfall, if you consider it a downfall, will be that those viewing the content on the special YouTube channel will need to purchase 3D glasses that will be available on YouTube’s online store for $7.10 per 10-pack.   Check out the press release after the break and don’t forget to let us know what you think of the whole ordeal in the comments below.    Read More…

How do you use your BlackBerry: Torch users – do you use the physical keyboard or touchscreen?

 BlackBerry Torch 9800 Keyboard

When I break out my Torch I sometimes have trouble deciding if I prefer using the physical keyboard or touchscreen keyboard better. I know when I first got it I was a huge fan of the physical keyboard. It was (and still is) one of my favorite keyboards on any device, however Bla1ze was pretty much stuck on the touchscreen keyboard, so I gave that a shot as well. Once I got fairly good at using it, I had a hard time deciding which to use. I essentially just bounce back and forth but can’t say for sure which one I prefer. So Torch users this one’s for you – which keyboard do you prefer and use the most? Do you use the physical keyboard? The touchscreen? Or maybe you split your time between the two? Cast your vote in the poll and leave a comment letting us know what you use.

Sprint’s Kyocera Echo Generates Screen Envy Amongst Android Users

If Android ever wanted to brag about multitasking, all of their phones should have come with two screens. Sprint’s new Kyocera Echo brags just that. Even as I write this article, I can’t help but look at my own phone in disgust. Just sitting there, shamefully, with its one screen. Its embarrassing. Now, a phone exists that actually meets the definition of a multitasker. You can compose an email on one screen while browsing the web on another. Or have your text on one screen while the other screen is fully devoted to a huge touchscreen keyboard. There is however one limitation that I’m aware of. Currently the phone doesn’t run the apps on the seperate screens simultaneously. Rather, it quickly alternates between the two apps. I’m not sure how, or even if that takes a toll on performance. I’m sure the guys at Kyocera have that all ironed out though. The Echo sports a 1Ghz snapdragon processor and Android 2.2 . Perhaps with all that screen real estate, the Echo would do well with a port from Android’s tablet OS honeycomb 3.0.

Do 56% of Verizon’s Smartphone Users Really Plan to Switch to iPhone (and Are You One of Them)? [Poll]

This image has no alt text

A recent survey conducted by research firm uSamp has uncovered some startling news. Among Verizon’s current Android and BlackBerry users, 56 percent are planning to switch to Apple’s iPhone when it launches next week. Additionally 26 percent of AT&T’s iPhone users also plan to make the move. We just aren’t buying it, and here is why.

The survey conducted polled a total of 727 people chosen from uSamp’s database. That number includes both AT&T customers and Verizon customers interviewed. Assuming that it breaks down evenly, that means that only roughly 364 members of the poll were actual Verizon smartphone users, a mere 0.004 percent of the 9.3 million smartphone subscribers added last year alone. While we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume their polling methods are fair and true, such a small sample size really can’t be representative of what half of Verizon’s smartphone subscribers will really do.

Remember, many users are locked in on two-year contracts and don’t plan on paying the fees it would cost to break such a contract. By the time their contract runs out, who knows if they will even want the iPhone anymore or if they will have been enticed by some other new Android or BlackBerry handset. We’re just not buying that over half of Verizon’s users of those handsets will jump ship for the iPhone, merely on the economics of it alone.

But don’t let our opinion be the true measure, we want your voice to be heard. Do you plan on ditching your current Verizon smartphone for the iPhone?

New BlackBerry PlayBook video shows off highlights for business users

A new BlackBerry PlayBook video from Jonathan with the Product Team at RIM has just popped up demonstrating some of the uses the new tablet will have for business professionals. It’s a short demo, showing mail pairing with your BlackBerry via BlackBerry Bridge, multi-tasking, viewing Microsoft Office documents, and secure access to business applications such as Flash-enabled dashboards from SAP BusinessObjects Explorer.

I think it’s awesome how fast the information is shared between your BlackBerry and the PlayBook! It’s also nice to know from an IT/BES point-of-view that everything is encrypted and that no corporate data is stored on the PlayBook.

T-Mobile UK Limiting ‘Fair Use’ for All Users to 500MB/Month

This image has no alt text

In a bizarre move , T-Mobile UK has announced the change of their “Fair Use” policy to limit all users to 500MB/month of data, after which the carrier will throttle back data usage to limit network strain. This change affects existing and new subscribers, including those with 1GB and 3GB plans. Once 500MB has been reached — a number TMo UK thinks is fair, citing average use of 200MB per customer — data service will not be shut off nor will users be charged extra, but it will be limited in terms of download speeds.

The change, which takes place February 1st, isn’t necessarily bizarre due to the data allotment of the restriction, but because of its application to all users regardless of plan. It sort of eliminates the point of selling higher data caps altogether, which may be what T-Mobile UK is aiming for. They cleverly suggest that users wishing to avoid such restrictions invest in one of their mobile broadband plans…

Android SMS Bug Still Plaguing Users [Updated]

This image has no alt text

A bug that was first brought to the attention of Google back in June has yet to be addressed and appears to be picking up steam, let me add fuel to the fire (give you that which you desire).

An SMS bug in which a sender tries to send a message to their spouse saying “My boss is an A$$!” appears to be sent to the spouse, but instead is sent to a random, unintended recipient, like the boss. And I don’t mean Bruce! What is a little more insulting is that Google has maintained the priority of this bug to “Medium”.

As of this writing a poll on ZDNet indicates that 9% of Android users have been affected by this bug at least once. A number that should be more than high enough to light a fire.

Take a look at the bug for yourself, and if you have been affected by it report as much detail in that thread.

[via ZDNet | Read on BGR | Thanks to all who sent this in.]
[Image courtesy of Iowa State University]

Update:
Looks like all of the publicity this has been receiving over the past few days has prompted Google to up this one to “critical”. Well done, to everyone who rallied for Google to get a move on!

AT&T users now have the option to pay for apps on their phone bill

One of the biggest complaints about the Android Market up to this point has been the lack of ways to pay for apps. Now, however, it looks like AT&T users will be happy to know that they can now bill the price of any downloaded app to their carrier bill. No longer will those on AT&T be forced to pay for an app right away. When they go to check out, under the payment method dropdown box, they should see an option that says “Bill my AT&T account”, which will then simply tack on the amount onto their bill at the end of their cycle. No word on how, if at all, this will affect the new 15 minute refund window, but I suppose only time will tell. Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Gingerbread Will Be An AOSP ROM – Developers and Users Start Fist Pumping

French software engineer Jean-Baptiste Queru, a developer on the Android Open-Source Project tweeted earlier this morning that Gingerbread will be in AOSP shortly after shipping to the masses.  What does this mean to you?  It means Pure Android on your device!  Nothing against HTC’s Sense UI or Samsung’s TouchWiz, but sometimes you just want some plain ol’ stock (aka – Vanilla) Android.  If Sense and Wiz aren’t your forte, then this just might be down your alley.  It’s a real treat to see Gingerbread following Vanilla, Cupcake, Eclair, and Froyo, being codded off of the AOSP platform.  Developers and users alike will certainly not be complaining.  What’s your skin of choice?  Sense?  TouchWiz?  MotorBlur?  Does one trump over another?  Or perhaps just AOSP?  Let us know in the comments below.
