When Google’s new movie rentals and accompanying app were announced at this year’s I/O developers conference, the Motorola XOOM was announced as one of the first Android devices to receive streaming of rentals from the Android Market. The Google Videos (formerly Movies) app came to carrier-branded XOOM tablets along with the Android 3.1 update, but the same OS upgrade did not enable the app on WiFi-only versions of the slate. Motorola confirmed that the omission was intentional. Today that changes, as the app has been updated to include support of the WiFi XOOM.
The app still won’t work with rooted XOOMs, and unlikely ever will. If you don’t fall into that category, head over to the Android Market link below to grab Google Videos for your tablet now.

On Monday, LG announced that it will be partnering with the Google owned YouTube to utilize a special version of its application that will allow Optimus 3D users to share their 3D content with others online. The application, which will come preloaded on the device, will allow Optimus 3D users to record their videos and then upload them to a YouTube 3D channel that they can share with friends and family. It’s no surprise that LG would push for partnerships like this, as it will prove to be vital as a means to share that 3D content with others who may not have a 3D enabled device. The only downfall, if you consider it a downfall, will be that those viewing the content on the special YouTube channel will need to purchase 3D glasses that will be available on YouTube’s online store for $7.10 per 10-pack. Check out the press release after the break and don’t forget to let us know what you think of the whole ordeal in the comments below. Read More…
LG is sticking close to their words about starting a war, even though they meant that for the tablet world, one could certainly say they’ve been stepping up their game to compete with the big dogs in the smartphone area. Having special apps designed to utilize your devices specific features is another way to get consumers to see the real advances in technology, and use it to their advantage.
The latest is the youtube app for the LG Optimus 3D, tailored for sharing 3D videos. It’ll come pre-installed on the Optimus 3D, and allow users to upload 3D videos to youtube’s 3D channel, making it easy to share your vision. Users watching the 3D videos will need the 3D glasses to view it properly however, which can be purchasd from Google’s YouTube store for $7.10 per 10 pack. Nice!
At a pre-MWC event in Barcelona, Samsung made their Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 Official, bringing the next evolution of their Android devices that rose to stardom in 2010. Samsung claimed they’ve sold 10 million Galaxy devices last year and the latest additions, while nothing groundbreaking, definitely bring some welcome updates that consumers will dig.
To make a long story short, we’ll give you the main skinny on each device and then dive into some explanation about the event itself, with nitty gritty details:
Galaxy S2 – 4.3-inch Super Amoled Plus screen, 1GHz Dual Core processor, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, 1080p recording and playback, 1650 mAh battery, NFC equipped, Samsung Touchwiz 4.0 with 4 “hubs” (Readers Hub, Game Hub, Music Hub, Social Hub), 8.49mm thin, 116g, Flash 10.1.
Galaxy Tab 10.1- Android 3.0 Honeycomb running on a 10-inch screen, 8MP camera, 2MP front camera, 1080p recording and playback, 10.9mm thick, 522grams, dual core processor, Surround sound with speakers on left/right of device in landscape mode.
And now a little background. First we got to the event and waited in a line outside:
Once inside, there was a brilliant scene set with lots of colors, food, drinks, and people all waiting to get into the event. We grabbed a quick pic with the guys from Angry Birds while we waited:
By the time they let us in the crowd was immense. Shortly after I took this photo, all the seats were filled and a few hundred people resorted to standing room only in the back.
Kim Titus, VP of Public Relations at Samsung, introduced the event, down dropped the curtains, and we found out the background music was actually being performed by a live “mobile” orchestra composed of violinists and artists equipped with musically inclined Galaxy devices:
Samsung CEO, JK Shin, then announced the Galaxy S2 once and for all, discussing the company’s continued commitment to Screen, Speed, and Content:
Then things got a little… slow. Samsung proceeded to invite a plethora of partners on stage to discuss how they are working with Samsung, and it caused the event to be filled with about 40 minutes of boring nothingness. New rule: partners only get a shoutout, a handwave, and a couple sentences. The “partners” made what was an otherwise an awesome event unbareable at times. Samsung also packed in a bit too much cheesiness through well-intended real life “examples” of different types of people using their Galaxy S for the better.
Then they pretended to end the event, dropped the curtain, but in role call style they presented the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in grand fashion:
Then, again, a partner got on stage and ruined the flow of the announcement. Belkin talked for about 10 minutes about pretty much nothing, saying they were going to launch Galaxy specific accessories, only they took 200 times longer to explain this fact and filled it with partnership fluff.
First Impressions?
Again, nothing groundbreaking. The Galaxy S2 is definitely an upgrade, seeing dual cores, Gingerbread, bigger/better screen, better cameras and improvements across the board. There are no “wow” factor additions, but the Galaxy S was already solid and this phone should yet again be a favorite when it’s released globally. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 isn’t much different than the XOOM – it’s an Android 3.0 tablet. That being said, it’s awesome.
We’ve got some hands-on videos of the devices coming up soon, but until then, below you’ll find a bunch of official pictures of the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 followed by the press releases for each:

AT&T has been pretty busy posting some interesting stuff on their YouTube page lately. Among the videos are tidbits of the Motorola Atrix 4G in action. They have produced several “mobile minute” videos showing off the device, its features and accessories. Hit up the video below of the Atrix 4G and note that they have added another video devoting a full 60 seconds just to the docking station alone. Everyone has been patiently waiting for Google to work out their issues with the TV and online media networks and provide updates that will give us access to the Android Market so we can all experience the full potential of the Google TV platform. That hasn’t been good enough for a group of users over at GTVHacker.com who have been working day and night to try and break into the Logitech Revue box and gain root to work around the current limitations. A few days ago they posted that they had managed to root the Logitech Revue box by soldering a few wires and attaching a serial device.
While the solution they found is not something that the everyday user is able to achieve, and we certainly caution anyone who wants to try this at home, they have rooted the device, found a way to bypass the blocks the online media sites have imposed and also side loaded the Android Market application.
The hack is known a the BreakVue hack and they are currently working on a release package to go along with the hack that will significantly increase the functionality of any Logitech Revue Google TV box.
Will all this trickery going on, they have recorded some videos of the device doing much more than it’s supposed to and shared this with everyone on YouTube.
The first video shows a few of the applications they have installed, including the Android Market which is still not working correctly in this video:
The next video shows the bypass system they have been working on to give access to the sites that are currently blocking access to any Google TV devices. The site they are demonstrating is Hulu.
The final video is more of an overview of all the functionality they have managed to achieve so far with some pretty annoying overlay music:
If you enjoyed these videos, be sure to check out GTVHacker.com to find out the latest status, issues and guides for getting the most of your hacked Google TV box.
Now lets just hope someone gets going on the Sony products and gives us the same functioality as these guys have done with the Logitech Revue with Google TV.
December 31st is here, which means it’s time for some quality fluff posts! Lol. This one is actually quality without the fluff though, as we roundup the links to some of our most-viewed news, reviews and video content of 2010. Keep in mind I pull this data from our site analytics, which means stories published earlier in 2010 have more time to generate views throughout the year. That noted, it’s clear to see the BlackBerry Torch was hugely in demand this year as content related to the Torch are at the top of the lists. And for good measure, we tossed in our editors’ favorites as well (you can probably guess what mine was..lol). What was your favorite story of 2010? Sound off in the comments!
Camera phones have come a long way lately. Many of them, like the Galaxy S line for example, can even capture video in 720p. If you’re going to be capturing video on your phone, though, it’s very likely that you might at some point want to snip out just a portion of your video — maybe so you can send it as MMS. Finally, xda-developers member neoMJ has brought a tool to Android that can do exactly that. VidTrim will allow you select start and end points of any video and trim it to just the section you want, and then save the new section as its own video, or overwrite the old video. Due to different manufacturers using different encodings, it doesn’t work on ALL phones yet, but it has been tested and shown to work quite well with the Galaxy S phones, as well as many others. Hit the source link for more details, or to download.
If Jolly Old St. Nick drops off a shiny, new BlackBerry under your tree this Christmas and you just don’t know where to begin, you may want to check out the learning materials from our friends at Made Simple Learning. Until the end of the year they’re running a 50% off sale on all videos and select-books. BlackBerry Torch owners will be glad to hear they’ve just released their Torch Videos and eBook. Jump on over to their website at the link below for more details.
And don’t forget, if you’re in no need of learning but moreso have to deal with BlackBerry overuse, you’ll want to check out our BlackBerry addiction book, CrackBerry: True Tales of BlackBerry Use and Abuse!
In a press release (in Korean) concerning the bundling of Italian composer Ennio Morricone’s original music (and a few new ringtones and tunes) into the LG Optimus Mach, the South Korean branding of the LG Star (SU660) was revealed. It will go by the name LG Optimus 2X when the dual-core smartphone drops in that area of the world. A quick Google search turned up several YouTube videos of the handset that, if I’m not mistaken, haven’t gotten much attention due to the lack of the ‘LG Star’ name.
Here it is compared to the iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S:
Using its HDMI-out capabilities:
And scoring some impressive numbers against the Galaxy S:
There are a few more videos from the user zinna0000 posted within the past few days mostly showing off more HDMI-out capabilities. The phone is set to launch in Korea within the next couple of months, and we expect to see a lot more of it going forward.
Motorola just dropped off a new YouTube video where they are showing the Verizon Citrus. At only one minute long, it’s plenty long enough to show how the handset maker is evolving their touch-only Android smart phones. Anyone a fan of this sleek yet somewhat husky phone? We’re waiting on Verizon to announce this formally, where it’s expected to run $30 after rebate. There are three other clips on YouTube to help users get a feel for how to set up the Citrus – watch them here, here, and here!

The CrackBerry App Awards party went down as a huge success this week. With over 200 people packed into Xobni’s awesome headquarters, it was a perfect venue and atmosphere to hand out the 2010 Crackies. Big thanks also go to the BlackBerry Partners Fund for sponsoring the event and make it all possible. I have a feelng we’ll be doing it up again in 2011 even bigger and better.
Following up the CrackBerry App Awards Winners’ Announcement, we finally pulled the video from the event off the CrackBerry camera and got it up onto youtube for your viewing pleasure. Above you can watch the party walkabout, hosted by Adam, and below you can find interviews with some of our winners in attendance, recorded after winning their award. Enjoy the show!
What you say is what you search. Or at least that is Google’s latest tagline in promotion of their voice search capabilities for smartphones. In a new series of videos the search giant is showing off some of the various situations where voice easily outdoes text entry for searches. Voice searching is something that is in its fledgling stages of catching on, and Google has already made a larger push into voice as an input method with the release of Voice Actions for Android. It looks like Google wants to push the interaction method even more.
Maybe you have your hands tied up while working on the sink:
Or that moist hot tub is making it a bit hard to interact with your phone’s touchscreen:
The videos also include some YouTube trickery to allow you to click the very links that show up in the search results featured in the videos. So what do you think? Are any of you big users of voice search who find themselves in these sorts of situations or do you prefer good old fashion text?
As we saw with the BlackBerry Torch release (and leaked videos before that) Research In Motion has been putting together some rather detailed OS tutorial videos on devices when shipping them to retailers. The following videos are from the upcoming BlackBerry Style (9670) and show off some of the core functionality of the device. You’ll find more after the break folks. Big shout out to Lucky45 for sending them in!
Have you ever come across a great video on YouTube, but then when you’d try and find it later, you couldn’t? That’s exactly the type of thing that YouTube Ripper can prevent.
YouTube Ripper works easily enough, just launch the YouTube application, load up a video, then tap the Menu button on your phone.
Like a large percentage of Americans, my family and I went to see fireworks for Independence Day. I love the fireworks, and every year that I go I try to take pictures of them with my decent point-and-shoot Canon. And every year I’m disappointed even by the best pictures, mostly because even when they look good they don’t look like the fireworks did to my eyes.
This year I started off taking the same kind of pictures, and I looked at a few of them to see how they were coming out. As usual, I was disappointed, so I returned the camera to its case and resignedly resolved just to watch and not worry about photos. Then I thought of my iPhone 4, sitting in my pocket. I figured it wasn’t likely to take any better pictures than the “real” camera, but what did I have to lose? So I took it out and took a few practice snapshots.
I was absolutely blown away. The pictures were crisp and clear, and more significantly, looked exactly the way the fireworks did to my eyes. I kept snapping away, switching over to video mode a few times to see how the iPhone would handle those. Not all of the pictures turned out great, of course, but I got 60 still pictures I liked and three videos. (The fireworks were at a lake, which accounts for the reflections you’ll see in many of the pictures.)
So, yeah, the iPhone 4 has some issues, though I haven’t had any trouble with signal strength at all. And the camera does seem to take somewhat yellower indoor photos than the 3G, but man is it awesome at taking pictures of fireworks!
On Thursday June 24th, 2010 the iPhone 4 was released in Apple stores across the United States. Some people received theirs via pre-order the day before, while many others were waiting patiently in line at Apple Stores for theirs. For two artists on opposite sides of the country, the day couldn’t come quickly enough. One got his phone via pre-order, the other waited in line for 9 hours before getting hers. Both had spent time before getting the phone writing music and the very next day both used the iPhone 4 to film music videos.
By June 30th, both those videos were filmed and edited and up on YouTube for our viewing pleasure. Both are excellent pieces of art in their own regard, two very distinct and different styles highlighting not only the innovative and inevitable use of the technology, but also the musical and visual creativity of each creator. Here are both of those videos, and while I’m sure by now there are many others just as creative on the internet to choose from, these two stood out to me immediately due to a myriad of reasons.
Larkins viewed the project as a challenge, to use new tech, end results unknown. Says Larkin, “How the iPhone 4 was going to perform would be a complete mystery so I knew that whatever we shot would need to be strong enough conceptually to stand on it’s own. I also wanted the end product to be looked at on the same standard as any other DIY/low budget video, and appealing to digital world that we live in.
“Andrew took the very rough and displaced pieces of a vision I had for a digital concept and came up with what I think was a genius idea of creating a literal “iPad man” and taking him on a series of dates throughout the city. We shared the idea with our prop designer Casey Johnson whom in a matter of 24 hours created a customized prop to allow a person to wear an iPad on their face.
“Nearly nothing was hand held, as we wanted to stay away from the camera shake that is often present in the camera. For 90% of the shots I used a mic stand and a grip clamp as our tripod. It looked awkward and curious to most onlookers, but it certainly did the trick!”
For something that was composed, filmed, directed and edited in less than a week (only the music composition taking longer than a day) it’s a great example of artistic ingenuity using new tools.
While creative in it’s own right, there is no denying that this video would make a great commercial for the Apple products used and featured in it. Even though that wasn’t the intent of the video – to get attention from Apple PR – it may be a welcome side effect. The main intent though, was to make art regardless of the technology. In my opinion, I think Rana, David & Andrew succeeded.
Cascades
Meanwhile across the continent, Vancouver, British Columbia folk artist flakjakt (Steve Failows) had written his own song. He finished mixing it moments before heading out to the first filming location. Enlisting the assistance of his friend and director Marty Martin, they set out to film a great video regardless of the tech, as Failows put it “although we shot on the iPhone 4 – our main goal was to make a great video regardless of the tech involved. Hopefully we came up with something fun and memorable.”
Shot in a little over a day, there was more post production work done on “Cascades,” which is evident in the final product. Martin ended up with a ton of footage to edit, from the nine locations they shot in. Using Final Cut for the editing, he admits, “although the result is a bit rushed and rough, I ended up embracing the look and think that it helps translate emotion well onscreen.”
Martin had more to add on his Vimeo page. “Of course, I knew there would be obvious technical hurdles, so everything was structured to be shot to take advantage of the camera’s advantages. Lack of lighting, aperture and shutter speed control were all taken into consideration when planning all shots. And because I knew a lot of the camera work would be locked off (something I rarely do), a lot of the cinematic vision was going to be dependent on how I cut everything together in post.” The end result is a quirky, fun and surprisingly smooth video complimented by an equally minimalist song.
Clearly, these are artists that were very enthused with the new features on the iPhone 4, immediately accepting a challenge that had not been offered just to experience the process and results. While of course on of the most popular hand held devices in the world, it’s great to see the device not just being loaded with apps and becoming nothing more than a toy, but inspiring creativity in people.
I look forward to seeing more projects coming from this rush of creativity, just as we saw with the release of the iPad, and will still see. If you happen to come across any other creative projects using the iPhone 4 or iPad, leave a link in the comments!
