This Week in The Clone Wars: Aurra Sing Returns

Aurra Sing takes aim

Back from the dead, deadly bounty hunter Aurra Sing is up to no good in “Assassin,” an all-new episode of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS premiering at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, October 22 on Cartoon Network. TM & © 2010 Lucasfilm Ltd. All rights reserved.

Padmé Amidala is the target of yet another assassination plot, this time by the ferocious, swaggering Aurra Sing. Left for dead after her failed gambit at the end of The Clone Wars’ second season, deadly assassin Aurra Sing has returned — and she’s out to redistribute the balance of power in “Assassin,” an all-new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars — airing at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT tonight, Friday, October 22 on Cartoon Network.

Tasked with protecting Senator Padmé Amidala during a political mission to Alderaan, Ahsoka Tano is plagued by recurring visions of Sing’s return. Unable to clear her mind, Ahsoka begins to worry that the stress of war is finally taking its toll on her – until the blood-letting assassin reveals herself with an attempt on Padmé’s life. And after their last confrontation left Sing humbled, humiliated and presumed dead, the lean and mean bounty huntress is only happy for a chance at a rematch with the young Padawan…

“Aurra never dies. She gives what she takes and she kind of enjoys it,” laughs Jaime King (My Bloody Valentine 3D, Sin City, The Spirit), who voices Sing in The Clone Wars. “She does have a bad taste in her mouth [after the events of Season Two], but rather than being bitter and angry, she is doing what she needs to do. It’s a very cut-and-dried thing for her. Everything that happens makes her more intense and ruthless. She says bring it.”

Sing’s cruelty and merciless methods have certainly made her a favorite among fans; fascinating audiences with her blink-and-you’ll-miss-it introduction in the live-action Episode I, she’s since been elevated into the upper echelons of Star Wars icons. Her distinctive appearance – creepy yet seductive – plays into that mystique, giving her a visual flair that complements her ruthless demeanor.

“She’s long and lean and lanky, but she has curves. She’s perfect,” says King. “She’s got those long fingers; they’re spidery like she is. Predatory. Her physicality is very much a part of her, and it’s sexy. There are so many people who aren’t inherently beautiful, but their qualities and gifts make them so stunning. It’s the It Factor, and Aurra’s got It. Men love her because she’s hot and badass, and women love her because she’s strong and badass. There aren’t a lot of strong female characters like Aurra.”

Still, while Sing may be “badass,” that doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s all bad, according to King. She may not necessarily be a friendly, compassionate type, but Sing nonetheless has a backstory that provides the drive behind her bad behavior, But don’t expect a comprehensive explanation of those motivations anytime soon.

“There’s a history we haven’t been told,” says King. “It’s up to George [Lucas] and Dave [Filoni] what they choose to show. I have my ideas, but those are secrets I like to hold on to; those are the layers that inform the character when I’m playing her. I’m never just pretending; it’s my job to understand why she does what she does, so that it comes from a place of truth. Each episode reveals more. It’s Star Wars; it touches lives, and I believe it will last forever. I love that.”

Here’s a second preview (the first is here) of this week’s episode, “Assassin”:

Experimenting With Chemistry of Fall Colors for National Chemistry Week

Image: Kathy Ceceri

Here in my corner of North America the fall colors have finally started to emerge. And as I was admiring the reds, oranges, and yellows of the mountains surrounding my area, I was reminded of a cool experiment the kids and I did a couple years ago when we were studying chemistry. This week is also National Chemistry Week, so it’s a perfect time for trying a little chemistry at home.

What we did was take the organic solvent acetone — also known as nail polish remover — and use it to analyze the chemical composition of leaves from a variety of trees in our yard using a process called paper chromatography.

Rumor: Android Gingerbread SDK May Drop Next Week

Android Gingerbread

Rumor mills are spinning, as we have seen several postings about the possible drop of Android Gingerbread SDK next week!

The word on the street is that this version of Android OS will be the most radical change to the OS we’ve seen. Majority of speculation has also been that Gingerbread will be version 3.0, but in the view of snacks and baked goods, it’s likely it will be numbered at 2.3-2.5.

For any of the above to have any impact aside from sheer hearsay, we’ll eagerly await the official release from Google.

This Week in Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Corruption Strikes Mandalore

Publicity still for Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Padmé and Satine begin their investigation into Mandalore’s dirty politics in “Corruption,” an all-new episode of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS premiering at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, October 8 on Cartoon Network. / TM & © 2010 Lucasfilm Ltd. All rights reserved.

This week’s episode is the sort that sounds in advance like a bit of a mixed bag: On the one hand, the Mandalorians are back! On the other hand, instead of the Death Watch, we get the banal evil of political corruption. The episode also prominently features Padmé Amidala (see my interview with Catherine Taber) and Duchess Satine, teaming up to investigate an illness attacking Mandalore’s children, and with implications of corruption deep in Mandalore’s government.

According to Dave Filoni, what’s interesting about this episode is the interplay between internal political conflict on Mandalore and the galaxy-wide Separatist/Republic split:

“Mandalore has a long history of violence, and they’re trying to move away from that. But this is all taking place in the middle of a galaxy-wide civil war, so it’s difficult for Satine to make a case for peace when there’s so much violence all around. And that’s exactly why peace is so important to her.

There are bigger threats to peace than the Death Watch[.] We’ve seen their approach in Season Two; they used violence as their message. But political corruption can be far more damaging in the long run. The scale’s so much broader here, and the stakes are system-wide. Ultimately, Mandalore’s allegiances are key to the Clone Wars, so every little transgression can have ripple effects throughout the war. Corruption can spread, and it’s threatening to poison Satine’s best efforts.

Whenever we visit Satine, we’re going to see a war of ideals[.] She’s very steadfast in her beliefs, and that’s what makes her a good leader. She’s got a tough job, though. She is often undermined by her own people, and her core beliefs are even at odds with the beliefs of the other Clone Wars heroes – including the Jedi and the Senate. Ultimately, they all want the same thing – peace – but they have different thresholds. With an endgame that is so important to the entire galaxy, compromises can be difficult – even when it comes to the means by which peace is achieved.”

Here’s a clip from this week’s episode:

“Corruption” premieres Friday, October 8, at 9pm ET/PT, on The Cartoon Network.

Nokia N8 pre-orders shipping this week in USA? That’s what they say

Nokia N8 pre-orders shipping this week in USA? That's what they sayI am REALLY loving this evaluation Nokia N8 device and have about 10 days left before I have to return it so I am as anxious as most of you (OK, probably not so much since I actually have one to use) to get our pre-ordered devices. The banner (included here) that is now up on Nokia USA states that the N8 devices are shipping this week. I just got off the phone with customer service and they still don’t have any idea about when that might be and just gave me the standard, “You will receive a confirmation and shipping information when your order is shipped” statement.

It is great to see so much excitement for the devices and I really wish you all had them now as well. I’ll keep working on answering your questions and posting thoughts on the device and imagine there may be even more questions when you get them too.

More Information Re: Samsung Vibrant Update Coming Next Week

If you are a little agitated with Samsung and T-Mobile because of the delayed OTA update for the Samsung Vibrant, you might rest a little easier as Samsung has stated on their Facebook page that more details regarding the OTA update will be coming next week.

T-Mobile and Samsung are hearing your questions regarding timing for the Vibrant software upgrade. We are continuing to work diligently to provide you with improvements in an effort to provide you with a high quality experience. We plan to have more information to share next week regarding timing on when these updates will be delivered to customers over-the-air. Thank you for your patience.

Hopefully soon after, they’ll be pushing out an OTA update to address some of the issues we’ve been having including a GPS fix. Samsung recently stated that an update for the Vibrant was available on their Kies program, but T-Mobile quickly urged people to wait for an official OTA update from them. It’s good to know that both T-Mobile and Samsung are aware of the deep frustration this issue is causing customers. Other than the GPS issue, what are some other issues you are experiencing with your Vibrant?

In Response to Outcry T-Mobile and Samsung Promise More Info Next Week on Vibrant Update

Screen-shot-2010-10-01-at-12.40.27-PM

In an effort to reassure those owners of the Samsung Vibrant who feel a bit left out after the other three American Galaxy S phones received minor firmware updates addressing a wide range of issues, Samsung is tweeting new info about an update for the T-Mobile device. While they can’t get an update to Vibrant users next week they are promising more info on what many are hoping will be a patch to fix the buggy GPS plaguing the Vibrant, a fix the captivate has already received. We see no reason why the update shouldn’t be coming soon, but wackier things have happened.

Adobe Flash Updated for Second Time this Week

flash

It’s only been a few days since Adobe issued a critical update for their Flash Player for Android to patch a pretty major security hole, but something must have not been sitting right in that version as a new update has just landed in the market. The changelog for version 10.1.95.1 isn’t known yet, but the assumption is that it is tidying up a few loose ends left after Adobe quickly pushed the first update to save face after the security exploit was initially revealed.

If you already have Flash player installed you should get a notification to update, but as that can sometimes be delayed its best you head over to the Market yourself if you want the update right away.

Cellular South announces availability of HTC Desire by mid-next week

The HTC Desire is finally going to be available in stores mid-next week for Cellular South customers as promised.  This announcement comes to us less then 2 weeks after US Cellular announced that they had it in stock.  It’s good to see the smaller carriers getting such a good phone as it keeps the big 4 aware that they aren’t the only ones carrying top of the line Android smartphones.

As a reminder, here are a few specs on the HTC Desire:

  • 1GHz Snapdragon CPU
  • 3.7″ screen
  • Optical Touchpad
  • 5MP Camera

What can we expect from Nokia World next week?

What can we expect from Nokia World next week?I am pretty dang excited about attending my first Nokia World in London next week, even if it is costing me the last 4o hours of my vacation from my day job and a couple thousand dollars in travel costs. I love checking out new smartphones and since Nokia makes some of the best in the world there is plenty to get fired up about for a fan of Nokia devices. FoneArena put together a post that brings together all the latest rumored devices and I am pretty sure we are going to see at least a couple of these next week.

The post list the following rumored devices:

  • Nokia N9, first MeeGo device
  • Nokia E7, Symbian^3 slider smartphone that looks like a N8 with QWERTY keyboard
  • Nokia C7, Symbian^3 smartphone, mid-range device
  • Nokia C6-01, Symbian^3 version of C6 with 8 megapixel camera

One device I know I will for sure finally get a chance to try out is the Nokia N8. If they have them on sale in the UK, not likely, I may buy my own model there instead of waiting for the probable end of September availability of my pre-ordered NokiaUSA.com N8.

Evo 4G to be available online again next week

Those of you who have been patiently awaiting the return of the Evo 4G to Sprint’s online store won’t have to wait much longer.  Sprint has announced that the phone, which recently received its update to Android 2.2, will once again be available online sometime next week.

The device has been insanely difficult to get a hold of, with only limited numbers available in select Sprint and Best Buy locations.  You might not want to wait if you plan on ordering online, as Sprint is once again slapping the dreaded “limited quantity” tag on this batch of inventory.

There has been no announcement as to which day you can expect to see the Evo 4G available online again, so stay tuned for more details as they become available.

Motorola DROID Gets Froyo Love Early Next Week!

A Motorola Employee announced via the company’s support forum that Verizon Wireless will start pushing Android 2.2 (Froyo) to the original Droid by Motorola during the week of August 2.

The report also claimed that Froyo could have been pushed to a small select few as a pre-launch test as early as July 30.

There has been no official word yet but Verizon’s website now has an updated Mandatory Upgrade page for the FRG01B update in the System Update section of their website.

Through forums, the closest lead I found was a timeline on Motorola’s support site detailing plans for upcoming Android Software upgrades. The timeline indicates that an upgrade to Android 2.2 is expected to begin the week of August 2 for the Droid. From the looks of the chart, the Droid X doesn’t have a targeted date yet.

Verizon to Push Froyo to the Droid Next Week!

In an email communication from a Verizon analyst in Corporate Communications named Albert Aydin, we received the following message:

I just wanted to share with you that Verizon Wireless will push Froyo, Android 2.2, to the Droid by Motorola (introduced November 2009) next week.

This came to our inbox just a few minutes ago, confirming all the rumors that we have heard talking about the Froyo push from Verizon.

On a side note, this coincides with our own Aaron Kasten on the AGTN Podcast, who during our Summer Extravaganza dropped that the Droid would be the first Verizon phone to get Froyo officially.

Droid owners, rejoice!

Motorola Droid to receive Android 2.2 next week

According to an article over at engadget, they have received official word from Verizon that Froyo will be headed to the original Motorola Droid next week. It’s entirely possible that this could be a hasty response to HTC’s notice that the Evo will also be getting 2.2 (officially) on 8/3, but however it came about, I’m sure you Moto Droid users out there will be happy.

What do you think of Froyo coming to the original Droid? Let us know in the comments!

Shark Week 2010: For the 23rd Time, There’s Blood in the Water!

Air Jaws

Photo © Discovery Channel / Chris Fallows

We humans take great comfort in our spot at the top of the food chain, but sometimes it’s a healthy thing for us to get a lesson in humility. And there’s no better source for a good humility lesson than the Discovery Channel during Shark Week, which starts this coming Sunday night.

Yes, for the 23rd year, Discovery is making midsummer television exciting, fascinating and in all ways sharkier. You can read all about the programming on the official Shark Week website, where you can also see clips, read about sharks, play shark-related games and even turn a picture of yourself into a bizarre hybrid of shark and human. The week kicks off at 9PM Eastern/Pacific on Sunday with Ultimate Air Jaws, all about the amazing aerial attacks of great white sharks (see the above picture). That show is immediately followed by Into the Shark Bite, produced by the same folks who do Discovery’s Time Warp series, which uses high-definition, high-speed cameras to show how a shark bite works from closer-up than you can get without reducing your total number of limbs. And that’s just for starters.

This year Shark Week is being hosted by Craig Ferguson, geek king of late-night TV talk shows and friend to MythBusters. I can’t wait to see what kind of biting commentary he has to offer.

Froyo To Roll Out On 3 Devices Next Week!

It looks like the Froyo will be making its way to your devices very soon. Thanks to a Verizon tipster who claims that the Motorola Droid X, the HTC Droid Incredible, and the Motorola Droid will be receiving the Android 2.2 update at the same time. He also stated that this not a rumor, but confirmed. He stated that HTC and Motorola will be release Android 2.2 simultaneously and will start pushing out the Android 2.2 update beginning August 6th, which is next Friday, and is expected to hit all of these devices by August 15th. That is great news and would possibly confirm the Motorola Droid 2 shipping with Android 2.2.

Keep your fingers crossed and an eye on your device.

With these devices receiving Android 2.2 very soon, now would be a good time to purchase any of these devices via the AndroidSPIN Cell Phone Store and receive the best prices around.

Firefox 4 Beta 2, Due Next Week, Adds Tabs on Top for Macs

Mozilla hopes to deliver the second beta version of Firefox 4 to users before the end of next week, according to the minutes from its recent developer’s meeting.

Tuesday’s meeting notes show the team has picked next Thursday, July 22 as the proposed ship date for Firefox 4 beta 2.

There are several enhancements on the way in beta 2, but the one sure to raise the most interest (or the biggest stink) is the new tabs-on-top interface for Mac OS X users. Windows users got the tabs-on-top look as the default interface in Beta 1 earlier this month. With beta 2, the rollout continues to other OSes.

The tabs-on-top interface is a growing trend among browser vendors. It was popularized by Google Chrome, which shipped with top-tabs as the default within its initial release. Reaction was mostly positive — Opera now puts the tabs on top, and Safari tried the same thing in a beta release thing before abandoning it. But there are some within the Firefox user community who don’t want to see Mozilla’s browser make the switch just to chase the latest design fad.

Mozilla’s lead user experience designer Alex Faaborg defends the decision, saying it has nothing to do with fashion. By putting the tabs on top, he argues, Firefox 4 will be better suited to running web applications that sit in their own tab. It turns the tab bar into something much closer to a dock or a task bar — a fitting change, since the browser is becoming something much closer to a GUI for an operating system.

Here’s a mock-up showing several web apps running in top-placed tabs in Firefox. The browser may not end up with this design, but it nicely illustrates Faaborg’s idea.

Here’s a seven-minute video his team produced that furthers the debate:

Of course, if you don’t like your tabs up top, you can always revert to the old look in the browser’s View menu.

Some other stuff due in Firefox 4 Beta 2: CSS transitions, better handling of retained layers on pages and a new feature in the add-ons manager that confirms when an add-on has been installed.

As always, Mozilla’s ship dates and feature lists (especially for beta releases) aren’t final. The team usually sticks to the proposed plan, but don’t be angry or surprised if the release slips to the following Monday.

The final browser is expected within a few months, and you can read our preview of Firefox 4 on Webmonkey.
